I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I know we’ve been having a blast.
We just got home from spending a few days in Kentucky with my in-laws. We ate more turkey and watched more football than human beings should be allowed.
Then on Friday, Jett and I went out for one of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions. My in-laws live on a beautiful piece of property in Western Kentucky. While millions all over the world awake and set off hunting for the elusive Black Friday sale Jett and I go hunting for small, yet very fast rabbits.
We struck out this year but had a blast just walking around together. When we got back Gage joined us and we spent the rest of the morning shooting cans. We had better luck with the cans than the rabbits.
What’s one of your favorite Thanksgiving traditions?
If I’m with my mom’s family we have succotash for a side dish….but only my uncle and I will eat it, but more for me

@Sarha, I have NEVER tasted a succotash. What does that even taste like?
Really didn’t eat much. Did get a chance to ride my bike though. 22 on Thursday and 20 on Friday. Yep, little nippy when I started but heated up as I went. I also had a chance to do one of my favorite traditions. Since I/we don’t hunt I like to watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “The Santa Clause.” Been one of my traditions for years and now that the girls are gone I often watch them by myself now. watched Santa Clause 2 yesterday and sometime will watch White Christmas. In between I picked at food. Glad you all had a good Tday.

Pete, Those photos are magnificent Thanksgiving memories for you and your boys. It makes me think that as they grow up they will have the web advantage – being able to look back at their childhood simply by accessing archived installments of your blog and twitpics. How cool. We had to dig through dusty albums!

@pete basic version is corn & lima beans.
My uncle had to make it this year since nobody could find it in any store, so it was corn, lima beans,half and half….and I forget. I’ve heard you can put other stuff in it too, like kidney beans and/or even tomatos. But you won’t catch me putting kidney beans in my succotash (I have a small phobia of kidney beans). Basically it’s the most awesome holiday sidedish ever, so you should try it, even if you do the basic corn & lima beans mix.

Our house has kinda become the traditional “come-here-if-you-have-nowhere-to-go” kinda place for Thanksgiving…Karl LOVES cooking for people and I LOVE to help people so it works out perfectly!! New people every year!!

@Mike, so true! I really view my blog as a sort of public journal. I hope my kids have a blast one day pouring through these pictures and posts.
Pete, for my whole life, the Thanksgiving feast has been followed by a trip to the ranch for a weekend of deer hunting. With daughters, they would rather go shopping with their mother than hunting with me. So I am jealous of these pictures with your boys with guns in their hands…
Now I can only hope for hunting sons-in-laws…

If I am home back home in the States, my favorite tradition is to watch the Lions loose on Thanksgiving Day, always hoping for some sort of Thanksgiving miracle

We just started a thanksgiving tradition this year:
We had a dinner for 400 people who had no where to go for Thanksgiving.
My family and I worked with another family to put this all together and we had over 150 volunteers and fed over 400 people on Thanksgiving day.
It was a great tradition to start and we hope it continues for a very long time.

When I was a kid, we’d get together with one side of the family and go ahead and exchange Christmas gifts. That was pretty awesome. I thought every family did it that way, until I got married, which was a bit of a disappointment.
Every time I see photos like these I think to myself, “That camera is the best gift they got themselves…” Nothing better than being able to capture these moments… thanks for sharing them with us!

When I lived on the mainland we’d drive to CA and spend it with my Mom. Can’t do that now with an ocean in the way. I really miss that tradition!
Now we hang out at home with friends watching football and eating. A few years ago we started taking a family picture. Which is a challenge.

We always got out of school early on Wednesday and travelled to PA to spend Thanksgiving weekend with my dad’s parents and family. It was a special time for all our cousins to get together. Many years it snowed over the weekend. My dad, grandpa, and his brothers would go rabbit and squirrel hunting while my aunt and grandma prepared a huge Thanksgiving feast including homeade bread. After all these years those are still wonderful memories!
Having breakfast on Thanksgiving morning and then chili and hot tamales on Thursday evening with the in-laws.
I would have to say my favorite would be that moment when everyone is done eating and getting up from the table, getting their coffee and desserts and sitting around the family room together watching football and talking about Jesus, family, and the morning hunt

@Nana, I don’t think I realized grandpa used to rabbit hunt on Thanksgiving. I’m carrying on a family tradition without even knowing it.

we also watched about two dozen football games, but i’d have to say our biggest traditions have to do with food.
We always have chicken and dumplings for Thanksgiving dinner. Forget the turkey. Give me some chicken and dumplings!

I don’t always get to spend Thanksgiving with my family since we are spread out between 3 states (California, Arizona and Texas) so these past few years I have gotten to spend Thanksgiving with different people. This year it was with my friend Melissa’s family (Melissa and I went to college together at California Baptist University – I was a grad student and she was an undergrad and would always bug me the night before I had a take home exam due and coincidentally the same night I had started it lol). Her family does Thanksgiving from scratch. As in all the foods they have are made from scratch. Nothing store bought is allowed (although this year some maple leaf cookies from Trader Joe’s managed to make it in lol). I got to participate this year by helping to make pumpkin pie from scratch with organic sugar (that was some good pie). I decided after this year I was never again going to have a boxed and canned Thanksgiving again
This brings back great memories of hunting rabbits on Thanksgiving morning with my cousin and grandfather as a kid/teen. This Thanksgiving, however, I spent the morning running in preparation for eating more than I should have. You are creating great memories for your family!

The day after Thanksgiving my MIL makes a HUGE pot of the best soup ever. (turkey Tortilla Soup) They live in the woods and we always have quite a fire going in the fireplace. Then, when it starts getting a bit darker they let the kids decorate the tree. It’s a huge highlight and I think my kids look forward to it more than Thanksgiving day.
For actual thanksgiving, a huge tradition is the orange bow knot rolls. They’re supposed to be dinner rolls but they taste more like a desert pastry.

I had to do a wedding, and I had this beautiful black dress with bright silver detail around the neck. I wanted the matching shoes to go with him and know what they were.
