I just finished “The Dangerous Act Of Worship” by Mark Labberton and “Scouting The Divine” by Margaret Feinberg last week. Really enjoyed both books and the unique voice both authors brought to their topics. I took lots of notes and I’m really looking forward to processing both of them a little further.
On a more important note…
What are you reading?

Too much Arabic and middle eastern topic stuff
My favorite topic! I am reading a number of books about and by Mother Teresa including: “A Simple Path” and “No Greater Love”, also “Dark Night of the Soul” by St. John of the Cross, “The Life of Saint Teresa of Avila by Herself” and finally “Falling in the Arms of God” also by Teresa of Avila.
I am reading a lot of oldies. There are a few more but these are the core I am working through this month.
.-= jessica´s last blog ..The Tale of Hope =-.
I am reading The Myth of a Christian Religion by Greg Boyd.
It has been a really good read so far. I like that he has the guts to bring up issues that I usually only think in my head.
Probably the most controversial I have read so far is about how we as followers of Jesus can’t fully pledge allegiance to America and to God’s kingdom. We can’t serve two masters.
I think sometimes when we think America and God go hand in hand. We see bumper stickers that read, “God Bless America.”
But
God is a God of the nations. I think sometimes we have a hard time understanding that.
Really good book.

Just finished rereading The Next Generation Leader as well as Michael J. Fox’s new book, Always Looking Up. Interesting read. Currently reading “the Hole in Our Gospel” by Stearns. Another good one I just finished is “What Was I Thinking?” by Steve Brown. Going to base a sermon series around the topics.

The Blind Side – by Michael Lewis – even better than the movie…amazing story of adoption that only the LORD could script
Reading a couple of things:

I have been enjoying both and they are both challenging.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I’m reading “Strengthening The Soul of Your Leadership: Seeking God In The Crucible of Ministry”. Everyone in ministry should read this book about taking care of your own soul while serving others in this intense thing we call ministry.

No reading this month – it’s NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month)… so I’m writing. Just passed 38,000 words on my way to more than 50,000 by midnight Nov 30th.
Man, I’m making a serious reading list. You guys are reading some great stuff.
Aaron, I was just looking at “Hearing God” from Dallas Williard.
Our Men’s Group is reading “The Way of Agape” – an oldie/goodie by Nancy Missler.
Our Family Group is going through “Total Money Makeover” by Dave Ramsey.
I just finished “Same Kind of Different as Me.” Awesome book.
.-= Michael´s last blog ..The Silent Treatment =-.
I’m currently recording an audio book called, The Free State Of Jones. I’m not someone who reads Civil War books but this one (written by a Jones descendant) about a small town that apparently seceded from the state of Mississippi and became a town of mixed race people from slaves and non slaves is pretty fascinating. I hope the people who buy the audio book don’t mind my Yankee accent.
Reading “A Million Miles in a Thousand Years” by Donald Miller…one of my favorite authors. A stack of other books that I have waiting for me include “Simple Small Groups” by Bill Search, “The Rabbit and the Elephant” by Barna/Dale, “Shift” by Brian Haynes, and “Shelter” by Jimmy Holbrook.
.-= Randy Kinnick´s last blog ..What a Piece of Work =-.
BTW, Pete. I would be interested in hearing how you incorporate reading into your busy schedule. Insights? Strategy? Schedule? I struggle with this at times.
.-= Randy Kinnick´s last blog ..What a Piece of Work =-.
Ok, Pete, so for a change of pace from the favored genre here, I just finished “Liberty and Tyranny” by Mark Levin and am about half way through “Going Rogue” by Sarah Palin.
I know God is in control of the political landscape, but that does not mean that Christians should be detached politically.
PS I think I have a crush on Palin…
Have a Happy Thanksgiving all you wowax folks!
@Randy, that’s a great question. Almost all of my personal reading I do at night. Generally I do my personal Bible study in the morning and then I spend 30 minutes before bed at night reading a book of some kind.
I think the important strategy here is carve out the time (whether that’s 10 minutes or an hour) and stick to it.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Scared by Tom Davis
Highquest by the Navigators
To Live is to Die the life and death of Metallica’s Cliff Burton by Joel Mclver
I just finished reading Nice Girls Don’t Change The World by Lynne Hybels. Currently reading Twilight….Just kidding. I am halfway through Scouting the Divine. Margaret Feinberg is one of my favorite authors.

Currently I am reading as many possible books I can about mentoring (I am working on a mentoring project).
As well I am reading as many books as I can about Gen X and Y

I am a huge Henry Nouwen fan. Right now I’m reading his book, Life of the Beloved. It’s the kind of read I need in my life as I think about the next steps for church planting. Nouwen expounds on the Jesus model of Taking, Breaking, Blessing, and Giving as a means of allowing God to love me…and in turn give that love to others.
It would make an excellenct sermon series after God works it in you.
.-= RW´s last blog ..I hate Converse! =-.
@RW, I’m a huge Henri Nouwen fan! His books have had a huge impact on me over the years.
Wow…I feel so convicted. Right now I’m reading the manual for the Waves Tune vocal tuner plug-in I bought to try and figure out why it’s clicking and popping on playback.
Last cool book I read was “Einstein, His Life and Universe” by Walter Isaacson and I’m gearing up for David Kinnaman’s “Christian” which I vowed to read after your series some time ago which it referred to.
Velvet Elvis – Rob Bell…definitely stretching all that i was taught growing up.

Pete,
check out “The Naked Gospel” by Andrew Farley. It is just, wow, authentic. Its a look at how much Grace actually does cover, and how silly we can be as a church to water down who Jesus is and just what the cross accomplished.

I’m reading “Gospel Powered Parenting” by William Farley at the moment. It shouldn’t be taking me this long to get thru it, but there’s a lot on my plate! It is a tremendous book – I can’t recommend it highly enough! Given your weekend with Jett, there’s probably not a lot of info in that book that would be new to you, but it is a gem!

Are you on http://www.shelfari.com ? Its a place where you can maintain a bookshelf of books you’ve read or currently reading or planning on reading.
“The Dangerous Act of Worship” is a book that changed my life. God worked deeply in my life as I read it. Wish we could sit down over coffee and discuss it – you’re the only other person I know that’s read it!!! I’ve been dying to talk to someone about it. I’d say that reading this book had alot to do with leaving my position as worship pastor. As I read it, I had a lot of “holy discontent” with where I was.
