What Are You Reading? | WithoutWax.tv by Pete Wilson

What Are You Reading?

I just finished “The Dangerous Act Of Worship” by Mark Labberton and “Scouting The Divine” by Margaret Feinberg last week. Really enjoyed both books and the unique voice both authors brought to their topics.  I took lots of notes and I’m really looking forward to processing both of them a little further.

On a more important note…

What are you reading?

Too much Arabic and middle eastern topic stuff :(

  2. jessica November 24, 2009 at 6:49 am #

My favorite topic! I am reading a number of books about and by Mother Teresa including: “A Simple Path” and “No Greater Love”, also “Dark Night of the Soul” by St. John of the Cross, “The Life of Saint Teresa of Avila by Herself” and finally “Falling in the Arms of God” also by Teresa of Avila.
I am reading a lot of oldies. There are a few more but these are the core I am working through this month.

I am reading The Myth of a Christian Religion by Greg Boyd.

It has been a really good read so far. I like that he has the guts to bring up issues that I usually only think in my head.

Probably the most controversial I have read so far is about how we as followers of Jesus can’t fully pledge allegiance to America and to God’s kingdom. We can’t serve two masters.

I think sometimes when we think America and God go hand in hand. We see bumper stickers that read, “God Bless America.”

    But

God is a God of the nations. I think sometimes we have a hard time understanding that.

    Really good book.

I’m currently recording an audio book called, The Free State Of Jones. I’m not someone who reads Civil War books but this one (written by a Jones descendant) about a small town that apparently seceded from the state of Mississippi and became a town of mixed race people from slaves and non slaves is pretty fascinating. I hope the people who buy the audio book don’t mind my Yankee accent.

I know God is in control of the political landscape, but that does not mean that Christians should be detached politically.

    PS I think I have a crush on Palin…

Have a Happy Thanksgiving all you wowax folks!

  31. Pete Wilson November 24, 2009 at 9:51 am #

@Randy, that’s a great question. Almost all of my personal reading I do at night. Generally I do my personal Bible study in the morning and then I spend 30 minutes before bed at night reading a book of some kind.

I think the important strategy here is carve out the time (whether that’s 10 minutes or an hour) and stick to it.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

“The Anatomy of Story” by John Truby. I am working on a screenplay and this is my guidebook. But it is a fabulous read in general, for anyone who appreciates the power of story.

And then, LOTS of early church history texts (school stuff).

I am really in need of a good light fiction read. I need to get out a few classics from the library.

I’m reading The Principle Of The Path, by Andy Stanley. Every Christian should read it…every pastor should preach it. If it was followed it would solve a lot of problems in peoples’ lives today.

Haven’t read “The Shack” yet either – so you’re not the only one, Pete. Did hear the author speak at Lifest (music festival July ’09 near Oshkosh) and he was riveting!

I am re-reading John Ortberg’s “The Life You’ve Always Wanted.”

“The Dangerous Act of Worship” is a book that changed my life. God worked deeply in my life as I read it. Wish we could sit down over coffee and discuss it – you’re the only other person I know that’s read it!!! I’ve been dying to talk to someone about it. I’d say that reading this book had alot to do with leaving my position as worship pastor. As I read it, I had a lot of “holy discontent” with where I was.

Right now I’m reading “Freedom of Simplicity” by Richard Foster. I want to start “Everything Belongs” by Richard Rohr soon….

The Barbarian Way by Erwin McManus had a huge impact on me. Anything McManus writes is remarkable to me. I finished Wide Awake this summer and he just puts you on fire to do something.
Life of the Beloved, by Henry Nouwen~ Wow…incredible. First time I have read anything by Nouwen and forever changed by him.
Just brought home The Ragamuffin Gospel, by Brennan Manning. Cannot wait to get started!

  113. Chris Brian December 2, 2009 at 9:18 am #

Just finished reading “Religion Saves Plus Nine Other Misconceptions” by Mark Driscoll. Driscoll tells it like it is,and always has Scripture to back it up.

  114. Joanna December 2, 2009 at 9:28 am #

Recently finished Broken on the back row by Sandi Patty (its worth reading even if you aren’t into her music), Mark Driscoll’s Death by Love, Forgotten God by Francis Chan, The supremacy of Christ in a postmodern world which is a collection of messages from desiring god conference (REALLY good book, you can download it for free at the desiring god website). On the to-read (well really audiobooks to listen to) pile is Banker to the poor by Muhammad Yunus, Fearless by Max Lucado and Finally alive by John Piper.
