My Former Gig

PastedGraphic-2

It seems every generation has a group of these guys who every girl really thinks they want and every guy pretends to hate but really wants to be. I’m asking you to abandon all of your dignity today and answer this life defining question.

Whose your favorite boy band of all time?

Thanks to Tripp and Jarrett for the photo. As usual, nice work fellas.

So what I consider to be a boy band? Bands like Backstreet Boys and ‘N Sync. I don’t like them. Sure, I liked a few of their songs. I even liked one by 98 degrees. But in general, they all sound the same and get really annoying after a while.

Give me Celine Dion, Alanis Morrisette, Norah Jones, Jane Monheit, Kristin Chenoweth, Ginny Owens, Selah, Watermark, Jill Paquette, Janna Long (of Avalon), Mandisa, Marin Mazzie, Audra McDonald, Liz Callaway.

It would have to be the Beatles. Yes, they played instruments, but their initial offerings were bubble gum, make the girls shriek stuff like “I Want To Hold Your Hand”, “Love Me Do” and “I Saw Her Standing There.” It wasn’t until Rubber Soul came out that we saw what was to come our way over the next two years when ‘Revolver’ and ‘Sgt. Peppers’ were both released.

  83. Oh dear. I can’t remember any boy bands that I was a secret fan of, but I do remember stealing my sister’s Spice Girls cassette back when we were younger. There was just somethin about Gerri Halliwell that I really liked.

  84. Actually, that first part is a lie. I was borderline obsessed with Hanson in the 4th grade. Granted, that was when they first became successful, but still.

  90. Honestly, Pete…I always loathed the boy bands. Never even wanted to be a part of them because I saw the girls going after Bon Jovi and thought rock n’ roll was the best path. :)

  91. Saw your book link on the sidebar. Can’t wait to read it. I already did a post about it. Thanks for the inspiration!

  92. Showing both my nationality and musical choice here, but I have to agree with brunettekoala here and say Take That, even though I’m an 80s child, I was never a big boy band fan, especially not any of the US bands. I was a bit old to be in their target fan range, but since they’ve had a successful comeback, yes thank you!

And despite my undying love for A-ha (not one hit wonders in the UK, thankfully), they don’t classify as a boy band, and I will hurt you if you disagree. :-)

  93. @Diane, I don’t think I’m familiar with “Take That”. I’ll have to look them up.

  96. hahahahaahahahahahahahahahaha that photo is great.

and i enjoyed hanson (in 3rd grade and 4th, i think)
    bsb in 4th
    bsb and nysnc in 5th.

i still have a bsb cd……and still know most of the words to both bsb and nysnc songs….

oh! and when i was at revelation generation in 07, i think, brian littrell was there and sang a couple of bsb songs. i screamed like a junior high fan girl and sang along at the top of my lungs…and then this lovely picture came to be: http://photos-sf2p.fbcdn.net/v120/80/35/45905185/n45905185_30748116_9565.jpg
it made me VERY happy, to say the least. =]
