I think this is especially true for men. We see reading the Bible through in one year as a challenge, but probably couldn't tell you what it said a week after.

I think we fall into the trap of reading the Bible just like any other book. We don't take time to dwell on it. We don't take time to dwell on anything positive anymore it seems. Just the negative. Great post and I will def be back.

Several things I have to do to absorb:

Make it the first thing of my day. Nothing else. Period. (Well, the cup of coffee that I get on the way to my "place")

I ask God to take care of it for me. Having ADOS makes it hard anyway. (That's Attention Deficit --- OH! Shiny!)

I use a specific Bible and a journal. As I read, I use a pencil to underline the words that jump out at me and often write notes of the concepts that spring forth from that reading. Right then, otherwise, it's gone.

Then, again, I have to ask God to make it stick, to pour it so deep into my soul that it becomes who I am. Does this always work? Nope. Mostly, though.

I have found that statement to be very true. With all the distractions, it is challenging to just sit still, listen and wait on God.

I find the best way to absorb the scriptures I am reading, is to absorb them while I read them. It is the most effective way for me to absorb and retain the wisdom God is showing me.

In order to do this I shut the laptop, turn off the tv, radio & especially the phone and shut the door to the room.

I journal when I do this about my feelings, the scripture I'm reading, the wisdom God provides me, the prayers he's answered and the great things he's done in my life. I make it a point to give him the undivided attention that he has given me so many times.

It took a while to develop this and some great talks from my pastor on silently waiting on God. When I take these steps, I am never disappointed!!

So true. Made me think of a spill one of my kids made on the table today at lunch. She spilt her water, went to grab a paper towel and tried to clean it up but because she was pushing the towel too fast, it just pushed the water onto the floor. I told her to slow down and let the towel absorb the water. --- There’s something to be said for slowing down. We’re always in such a hurry (me included). Perhaps that’s what God meant by that whole “be still” stuff. :) As for me, I try to focus on what God is trying to say. I don’t try to stay on some 365 Day reading plan and just read to read, accomplish a GOAL or read out of obligation. I try to clear my head, pray and ask God to reveal to me what He needs me to hear and give me the wisdom to understand it… whether than be in one verse or multiple chapters. I ask Him to remove anything else that might get in the way. It’s a daily alignment for me, some days are better than others. BTW... I’m convinced that one of the biggest obstacles for the church and Christians today is busyness. Subtle things that pull us away from what is most important. It's like a head-fake. Satan going "Hey, look over here" so we'll take our focus off the real deal.
