What A Shot!

One of my favorite things about going to Catalyst is meeting new friends who are doing cool things for God. I think it was Craig Groeschel who once said, “If you want to reach people nobody is reaching you’ve got to do things nobody is doing.” Well, Catalyst is full of people doing things nobody else is doing.

Point in case….

Pete Wilson and Dude Perfect

These are a couple of the dudes from Dude Perfect. Dude Perfect is a group of 6 college students who have become an internet sensation with their amazing trick basketball shots. Their latest video has over 3 million views already!  But more important than their basketball skillz is their heart and passion to make a difference.  On their website they say….

Ultimately, Dude Perfect is a group of college guys that follows Jesus. We didn’t plan on this type of interest in our videos and we’re incredibly grateful. We want to use this platform for something bigger than us.

And so, they are. They’ve now partnered with Compassion to try to help get kids in need sponsored. Check out some of their amazing videos.

Seriously, is there any other season of life, other than college, you could have so much fun doing something that is so absolutely pointless?

So neat they have that talent, and even more so that the are using the opportunity to help the helpless. Lord bless those neat young men!

    Wow! That is awesome!

But Pete I have to disagree with you on something. You wrote what they are doing is “absolutely pointless.” Now I know you don’t mean its absolutely pointless…because if it was why would you post it. What I mean to say is this: I think they’re doing something really awesome for God. They may be just doing great shots…but they’re using it to bring Him glory!

I can’t see that as “pointless” can you??

    Be blessed

(Disclaimer: Michael Holmes is NOT attacking Pete Wilson on his own blog. I repeat, Michael Holmes is NOT attacking Pete Wilson on his own blog. Mike Holmes is a supporter of Pete and everything he does and would not do that.)

My husband was watching them the other night and was laughing HARD! had no idea these young men were Christians…even better!

They will reach people that others couldn’t and that is awesome!

    Jesus is FUN!!!

    That is amazing!
I was thinking the other day…I wonder before Twitter and some of the social networking sites where I’ve been able to connect with some great leaders, who I passed by or sat by in Catalyst and other conferences without even knowing it. There is still no telling who is out there and what God is using them to do.

@ Michael HOlmes, are you attacking me on my own blog? Dude!

Just kidding. You’re right. They’ve taken a totally pointless hobby and turned it into something that can give God glory and sponsor kids. That’s a beautiful thing.

  10. Pete Wilson October 13, 2009 at 8:41 am #

@Nick, I agree and we need to find them and tell their stories. It inspires all of us.

To answer your question (and as the parent of two college students), NO, there is no other time in life quite like those years.

    Love the videos too…

There is no season like college! I miss it so much! That is awesome and such a good way to reach people who are into sports!

  13. Shawn Wood October 13, 2009 at 9:51 am #

Loved Catalyst! These guys were amazing! Love it when people let God out of the box :)

  14. Lex October 13, 2009 at 10:08 am #

Wait – those videos are real? The ball goes out of screen enough that I wondered …

Awesome that they’re working with Compassion, though. Way to take something random and fun, and really do good with it.

    That’s pretty cool!
To answer your question – I don’t know. I feel so trapped to work so hard – 24/7 – having fun and doing anything random and creative like this just stresses me out. Pathetic, huh.

thanks for the shot of laughter Pete. I can hear the naysayers already: the fix is on. Camera trickery. I think it is pretty awesome. I would be jacked too! To answer your question: probably not. No family to support. No image to keep up. I love it and hope they multiply in their outreach.

I took the pointless stuff I did in college and made a 20 year radio career out of it. :) Looking back, I probably should have learned to do trick shots with a basketball instead. :)

Now that is awesome!….or should I say “ridiculous” as apparently that is what my son who is the captain of his high school basketball team is going to say when I show him this. This is totally up his alley….basketball and God.
    Thanks for sharing!

@gitz, funny you should say that but I’ve been thinking the same thing. I loved college!

  24. Randy Kinnick October 13, 2009 at 2:44 pm #

These guys are amazing. I saw their story on the network news the other night, but nothing was said about their faith (not surprised). This is awesome that they are taking something pretty cool and something they love and using it as a platform for making a difference. Inspiring to us all. Groeschel was right…we need to continually be thinking outside the box for kingdom opportunities.

All I’ve got to say to that is…
    WHOOP!!!!!

Seriously though, being a current student of Texas A&M, I believe they’ve set the ground running for this school year with their talent and how they’re using it for God, showing the rest of us that it doesn’t matter what our talents are and how unrelated to the gospel we think they may be, God can use them and will.

  27. Pete Wilson October 13, 2009 at 6:46 pm #

    @Karlen, Well said!

  28. Greg October 14, 2009 at 12:30 am #

They were actually featured on ESPN a week or two ago and they plugged Compassion so in an indirect fashion they got their faith out there which was pretty awesome. The shots are real, they film from 2 angles or more on some to show the wind and trajectory movements.

  29. matt bortmess October 14, 2009 at 9:31 pm #

loved this at Catalyst… I’ve gotta show this to my kids. they’ll eat this stuff up!
