Discovering Purpose and Significance

I’ve got a feeling a lot of us wake up each morning longing for purpose and significance. We want to believe our life counts for something great.

I’ll let you in on a little secret. As much as I love my job and feel I’m getting to do exactly what God has called me to do I still often have that longing.

So, a couple years ago I joined the lunch buddy program through Preston Taylor Ministries. PTM is a wonderful inner city ministry that Cross Point partners with. Once a week I get the opportunity to meet with my lunch buddy Ladarius at the  elementary school just down from the church. We talk about everything from the bad food, to football, to life. He gets a buddy and I get purpose.

If you’re in the Nashville area and you’re interested in adopting a lunch buddy we would love to talk to you. There are currently 15 kids who need a lunch buddy. Below are just 3 of the children waiting.  For more information just email Ryan Bult, our director of missions at Cross Point at ryan@crosspoint.tv.

Just as an aside on this Pete. I have thought about the longing lately a lot and have come to realize that when the big screen TV and new car are not the driving force in your lie the longer view of how you can help the world for after you are not walking on it becomes important instead.

The church that I attend in Airdrie, Alberta has built a school in Africa and sponsors mission work which is great but helping individuals always is nice as it puts a face to the help you are giving. Thanks so much for sharing this Pete!

Such a great ministry and oppurtunity. I bet Ladarius looks forward to it just as much as you do!

I can definitally agree with the “longing for purpose,” as right now I am struggle with feeling as though each day I am doing all I can do – that God has designed just for me. Change is coming but it’s all about being patient.

Ohh, and Pete — I am going to try to guess that you pull cleaning liquid in the dishwasher instead of dishwashing detergant!! =) Hilarious.

the message of purpose and significance is SO vital. we actually use that as part of our abstinence curriculum in africa — the first 10 weeks, before we even mention AIDS prevention at all, is focused on teaching students that God has a plan for their lives. because we were finding that the abstinence message alone wasn’t enough. we work in the poorest area of south africa; the hopelessness is almost palpable. i had a fourteen year girl tell me that she understands what i’m saying, that if she sleeps around she’ll likely die of AIDS “but what do i have to stay alive for anyway?” woah. that wrecked me. so we start by telling students they have a reason to stay alive — because God created them for a purpose. then from there we talk to them about AIDS and the need for abstinence. purpose creates motivation to abstain. because it creates motivation to stay alive.

it’s the same for us in america. we just look at it a bit differently.
