Artist Get A Bad Rap

When I first started a church in Nashville I had people repeatedly tell me that local artists, especially Christian artists, would be too stuck up to ever serve inside the church. People said, “They might attend from time to time but they’re too busy doing their own thing to contribute to the church.”

I’ve got to say in the seven years of Cross Point I’ve never found something to be so untrue in my life. We have artists that pull back into Nashville at 5:00 a.m. on a tour bus and step off the bus and come straight to Cross Point to volunteer playing on our stage for 4 services! We used to have a drummer who had a hard time getting up early enough for rehearsal so he would sleep in his car outside the church on Saturday night so we could wake him up on Sunday morning. Now that’s dedication.

Just last week I walked out into the lobby to find one of our artist (whose name everyone would know) folding programs and helping us address envelopes for a mailing.

The artists in Nashville whether they be musicians, songwriters, or vocalist have been instrumental in what God has done here over the years.  They’ve contributed in so many unique and memorable ways.

I bring all of this up because two of my great friends from Cross Point Todd Smith and Alan Hall are the founding members of Selah and they’re celebrating their 10 year anniversary and have a new CD that comes out today.

They have to be the most humble,  down to earth guys I’ve ever met and I’m so proud of the way God is using them. They’ve sold  over 2.5-million-albums and have won the Dove Award for “Inspirational Album of the Year” four stinking times.

To celebrate the release of “You Deliver Me” I’m going to give away 5 copies of their new CD today.

Just leave me a comment telling me where you serve in your local church and I’ll select 5 random winners.

I have been the Pastor @ Kimberly UMC for two months now. I went from a church that ran about 40-50 to a church that runs 127. Big change big difference. Still the same God.

I don’t need the CD (I pre-ordered it on iTunes) but I love my church and love serving with all amazing people in small groups and Kids World, especially Emma who is my buddy!

She’s 3 and my buddy! And Brewer who asked to pick music off my iPhone this week so he could dance and one of the best at sharing. So, Pete, you and Brandi have done an amazing job!

Prayer ministry. Serving Saturday – hands down one of my favorite days of the year.

I run the website. It’s not much now, but once school starts and I have better programs at my fingertips, it will be better. :)
I also serve the Church (not just the churches I attend but the Church as a whole) by going out and serving others through various ministries and outreaches.

I started reading Angie’s blog a couple of years ago and found myself wanting a closer relationship with God that she was so willing to put out there. Her and Todd are such amazing people. I really strive to love God like they do.

Because of reading the story of Audrey, I have joined a church and LOVE going. I actually look forward to Sundays!! Anyway, I have signed on as a Sunday school teacher for the pre-k room and also as the Christmas Program Director. I’ll definately need God to help me with that one! ;)

I a regular volunteer in the Nursery. And my husband plays on the worship team every week…and while most people don’t consider that part of my ministry…I do because I often stay home with sick kids, miss service, etc. so he is always able to go! Thanks for your blog.

I have been involved with women’s ministries for several years. I have taken a break, but am helping with an upcoming event this fall. I was very committed for years. My husband has been the Awana game director for years and is now heading up men’s ministries. With so many meetings and events, I have chosed to let support my husband right now and be home with the kids. With both of us on varous committees, it seemed like there was something almost every night on the calendar. Needed to ack off for more family time.

This is interesting as I had to list all of the areas of ministry that I have served in on the application for leadership for our new life groups just yesterday! I ran tv camera at one ministry, I served 10 years with the children between the nursery on Sundays and teaching the 4-6 yr old group on Wed. nights, I help organize our yearly Women’s Conference, I substitute teach for a sunday school class occasionally, I sang in the choir when we had one, I presently sing on the Praise Team, and I do a lot of cooking for church dinners. It’s awesome to serve God! I vote that you send one to the guy in the UK.

Thanks for sharing about these volunteers; it’s always an encouragement to hear about people’s dedication to our Lord.

For around 12 yrs I worked mid week or on Sundays with 5th & 6th graders. But then a couple of yrs ago the Lord opened doors for me to work with Women’s ministries in our local church in Wrightwood, CA. It’s cool ‘cuz I get to facilitate a bible study in my home for women by whom I am so blessed each week, have an opportunity to help pick out the curriculum we’ll be using throughout the year, and lots of opportunities to serve the women in our church behind the scenes are always arising.

I am currently taking a break from serving behind the soundboard. I miss it, but there is healing that needs to happen and I need to make sure I’m healthy enough to help lead the services.

Selah’s talent is incredible, loved them since the beginning, and maybe more so because I feel a kinship with them. I was born in Kinshasa, Zaire, Africa, and their grandfather started a school there. They also sing a song in the local language, Kituba, which I was able to read the words to my dad and he understood me.

Give them a hearty “Mbote” the next time you see them from a fellow Zairean. (Pronounced: mm-boat-a)

I focus my time promoting programs we offer to the community and and local highschools. If you’d let me rave real quick, I just want to express how impressed I am with the amount of devotion and servant-hearts you guys have up at CP Nashville. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a place where the humble spirit of Jesus was more evident. Well, I’m probably the last one on this thread and the Cd’s are long gone but that’s ok. I’ve been so blessed reading about all the ways God’s people are serving Him in their local churches!
I do a bunch of odd jobs. I critique the ladies’ singing group (the BEST job in the church!), lead a ladies’ Bible study, duplicate sermon tapes and CD’s, assist the treasurer with the checkbook and reports, pick up yard trash and pull weeds.

@Harold- I would LOVE to see that tap dancing team! :D

@Torybee- if you didn’t push the record button, folks like me would have nothing to duplicate and send to those who cannot attend or who have no church nearby. Keep up the good work!

It’s not how big the job is or how important it seems but rather how faithful we are in completing the tasks that God has assigned us in this season of our lives.
