Artist Get A Bad Rap

When I first started a church in Nashville I had people repeatedly tell me that local artists, especially Christian artists, would be too stuck up to ever serve inside the church. People said, “They might attend from time to time but they’re too busy doing their own thing to contribute to the church.”

I’ve got to say in the seven years of Cross Point I’ve never found something to be so untrue in my life. We have artists that pull back into Nashville at 5:00 a.m. on a tour bus and step off the bus and come straight to Cross Point to volunteer playing on our stage for 4 services! We used to have a drummer who had a hard time getting up early enough for rehearsal so he would sleep in his car outside the church on Saturday night so we could wake him up on Sunday morning. Now that’s dedication.

Just last week I walked out into the lobby to find one of our artist (whose name everyone would know) folding programs and helping us address envelopes for a mailing.

The artists in Nashville whether they be musicians, songwriters, or vocalist have been instrumental in what God has done here over the years.  They’ve contributed in so many unique and memorable ways.

I bring all of this up because two of my great friends from Cross Point Todd Smith and Alan Hall are the founding members of Selah and they’re celebrating their 10 year anniversary and have a new CD that comes out today.

They have to be the most humble,  down to earth guys I’ve ever met and I’m so proud of the way God is using them. They’ve sold  over 2.5-million-albums and have won the Dove Award for “Inspirational Album of the Year” four stinking times.

To celebrate the release of “You Deliver Me” I’m going to give away 5 copies of their new CD today.

Just leave me a comment telling me where you serve in your local church and I’ll select 5 random winners.

I don’t serve in my local church because I don’t have a church home right now. I just think it’s awesome you can share stories like that because in the near decade I was involved in Christian radio all I usually heard was the horror stories about artists. The ones that were actually living their faith were usually the ones you didn’t have “pimped” to you by label reps! :)

I love when artists are living sermons like you described in your post.

The way I serve my local church is being a voice in the community. By being a voice in my own house where my wife still does not believe. By being a voice to my two daughters – one of whom recommitted her life to Christ. I serve as a table leader in our small groups. I serve sometimes as a group leader. There is still so much left to do, but the day is still young. :D

Pete, it is amazing that you have a team of volunteers that are so devoted to helping out. The drummer sleeping outside church definitely sends a message to me (as I struggle getting up early on Sundays as well).

I help out in the TV Production department by running the lighting console. I’m lucky that the rest of the team has been willing to teach me all these things, and that I have made new friends along the way.

I currently serve as pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Greencastle, Indiana. I love my church and all the people that work so diligently week after week. (I also just finished my MDiv a few weeks ago!!! whoohoo).

    I love Selah!

  22. ransom33 August 25, 2009 at 7:21 am #

    Hi Pete,

I love Selah. There is a track called “Faithful One” which is a duet between Selah and Christy Nockels (or at least that is what appears on iTunes) and every time I listen to that I feel as close to the Lord as the very first time I heard that song.

I have served in various ways over the years in our church: children’s ministry, follow up team, led a prayer group for a while, but currently my husband and I host a house group at our house. However, at the moment I believe God is pulling me so much more outside the church doors and into our community. Last November our house group started an initiative to donate food for the homeless. Loads of people drop food bags at our house and then we take them to the Salvation Army premises who in turn hand thenm out to the homeless or anyone in need on a particular day of the week. We have recently invited our children’s primary school to get involved and some families have come on board this too and I recently wrote an article for the Parish Magazine in the hope of reaching hundreds of others to get involved too. In a way it feels like a very small initiative, but to be honest with you, of all the things I have ever been involved with within the church, this is the one where I sense the Spirit of God is really moving and working out His purposes behind the scenes.

As you know I am in the UK, so if my name comes up for the CD, I will understand if you don’t want to pay for the cost of the postage. Send it to someone else who is more local to you.

By the way, just heard your last sermon. It is not just during biblical times that names meant something spiritually. I believe this is still the case today and your name Pete, which I am assuming is short for Peter, as you know means rock. It is not a coincidence you were given such a name by your parents! You are fulfilling and walking in the very destiny that God had in mind when He brought you to life for He is building His Church upon rocks like yourself and thousands of others. Your testimony about the guy in the dog park is confirmation for me that you are walking in the very purpose that God has for you.

Sorry for my long comments. I do tend to get carried away.

    Be blessed!

How do I serve in church? I am in the chancel choir, handbell choir, I am usher captain 2 months out of the year, I am a lector, my husband and I teach the youth Sunday school classes and volunteer on Sunday nights when we can. Hooray for Selah!! (from another SCS alum!)

Since I’m fairly new at a really big church, I’ve only managed to get plugged into the nursery so far. However, I’ve been serving at Habitat for Humanity for a couple of years now… even headed to Thailand soon with my big pink framing hammer. :) Often, I get to do the fun stuff like climb on the roof, but sometimes I have to remind myself that I’m there for God’s purposes, not my own when I’m walking around picking up scraps and errant nails.

It’s my prayer that God will reclaim the Detroit affiliate and it will truly be a Christian organization in more than name only.

I have to say, this is one of the very reasons why I love the internet. Blogs, twitter, all of it has helped me see the people behind the books and music. If you don’t think you can learn something about someone’s character by following them on twitter, you’re just not paying attention!

That said–there have been many, many people I had ‘pegged’ one way, and they turned out to be a completely different (and way more awesome) person. The internet has (mostly) renewed my faith in people AND Christians.

(I love Selah, and have already planned on purchasing the album. (So excited!!) Don’t put me in the contest, I just wanted to share.)

Don’t enter me, Pastor Pete, I’m not serving in the church, but through my church’s home fellowship/Bible study group. There are so many who serve in our churches, and without recognition, they do it tirelessly. I am very blessed by those people and want to say ‘thank you’ for loving the rest of us in Christ through their service.

I don’t know how some of those artists do it. They get a lot of adoration, but so many of them, instead of taking it for themselves, are pointing to the Reason for their hope. God bless them!

When are in a holding pattern right now in the realm of service. We have just changed churches so must wait for the probationary period while all our background checks are clear before we can really jump in to serve.

We always serve 2 ways … children’s area. My husband and I love children and enjoy teaching them about Jesus. Also we like to serve the ministers and wives .. any way we can. .. Babysitting, friendship .. things like that

I’ve also participated with my other church members in Habitat for Humanity, Families Moving Forward, and the Patchwork Quilt. I get to join those artists for the 6:15 am call time as a member of the CP production team and choir. They are all so very talented and dedicated – it’s amazing!

Of course, with me, there are also 2 special people who have to drive across town and be at my home by 5:50am to stay with Bradley in order to allow me to do something I love to do. Sam’s parents are not “church people” at all – I’m so very grateful that they are willing to take the time to help us out – they are servants of CP as much as those on stage. :)

I have never really heard their music other than on Angies blog and I love it. So here I am….

I serve in a few areas. First I am the pastors wife BFF for 10 years, so I am sort of like pastor wife #2. Thats our joke anyways.

Right now I mostly am giving my time into donating free photography to families that can’t afford. I recently photographed the funeral of 19 month old Edna Mae for a family from our church.

When I am not photographing, I help with families in need as the pastor wife would. She always calls me when they get called so I can help where ever is fit.

I also (being an actress) provide free talent in videos or on stage production as needed.

I have been a member at First Baptist Dallas since 2002 about a year after moving to Texas. I recently transfered my membership to Hillcrest Baptist Church in Cedar Hill, TX. When I was at FBC Dallas I served in the Awana program (just finished my 10th year in the spring and as a leader earned the Citation Award for completing all of the 3rd-12th grade books and let me tell ya it was not an easy task especially when I hit the junior high books – for some reason they like to make junior highers write a lot lol). I also played clarinet in the orchestra (my main instrument is percussion – it got interesting at times and I learned how to transpose music by sight after I learned the first Sunday in the orchestra that you cannot play the music as written on the clarinet lol). I also worked in VBS and helped out with a few homeless outreaches and have been trained as a Yellow Hat (disaster relief). I plan to get involved with Awana at Hillcrest Baptist Church and FBC Dallas is still in need of me – I am supposed to be the Sparks Director this year. I don’t know how long I will be at Hillcrest as I am praying about moving to Nashville next year and hopefully I can get involved with Cross Point (would love to help start up Awana and also get involved with doing music at rest homes)
