Next Up: Mastering the Art of the Harmonica
“A man practices the art of adventure when he breaks the chain of routine and renews his life through reading new books, traveling to new places, making new friends, taking up new hobbies and adopting new viewpoints”-Wilfred Peterson
I read that quote the other night and thought of just how true it is. I love taking on new hobbies. In just the past couple of years I’ve picked up gardening, blogging, fly fishing, photography and lassoing (this only lasted about 3 weeks). I love the people I meet and the conversations these new hobbies often produce.
So what’s next?
Well, I’m thinking I would like to learn how to play the harmonica. Why? I have no idea, but I think it would be fun and a lot easier to transport than drums, which is the other instrument I would like to learn. I’ve included a video below which has truly inspired me to take harmonica playing to a whole nutha’ level. If I’m going to do it, this is the way I want it to go down.
Today’s “all skate” question is (stop lurking and join the conversation)…
What hobby or skill would you like to learn next?

I would like to learn to sew and make my own clothes. And also, to work harder on my writing skils
Great point

I’m excited for you!!!! Two suggestions:
1. Figure out the major scale first (do-re-me…) and the rest is icing on the cake.
2. Build a sound proof room in your house. HA HA HA HA
I want to learn more about construction. I’m renovating my deck with my father-in-law’s help. He taught me how to use a ‘speet square’ ($6.50 at Lowes) and it changed my life. What on earth I did before I had this amazing tool I’ll never know.
Life is a renovation project…and it’s all about having the right tools.
bought a mandolin a year ago in Mexico…need to learn how to play it!
.-= Ryan´s last blog ..A Weekend and A Wedding… =-.
that’s ‘speed’ square…not speet square.
1. French cooking
2. Altered books
3. Collage art
I’m learning to sew…even taking lessons next week!
My hubby bought a harmonica at the House of Blues while on our honeymoon, and every once in a while he finds it and pretends he knows how to play it.
Good memories
knitting, speak Italian, Thai cooking….I’ve had a few lessons in each so there’s hope

@Bill, maybe you can teach me the harmonica and I can teach you…oh wait I don’t know a thing about construction either.
I would like to be able to learn the Word better so that I could share some of the amazing revelations I receive with others. Be a teacher of some sort, but as a hobby, not a career.
I decided I’d like to learn how to play drums a week ago.

I’m going to try my hand (or voice and mind) at teaching and preaching the Gospel, probably for the youth and college-age adults at my church. This really is an adventure.

At first I was thinking something exciting like tagging great white sharks for research purposes. But I live in Ohio and I don’t think the Cleveland Zoo would let me practice in their tanks.
So, I guess for me it would be something a little simpler like bass guitar.

1. Become fluent in French ( took 2 years of it in H.S.)
2. Learn to draw (really well…portraits)
3. photography
4. a little sewing
I would love to be able to play guitar…writing and photography would be cool. Motivational speaking.?! Is that a hobby? I can sew and cook so I’ll trade for lessons.
I have been home schooling our kids for 12 years and I still have 10 to go AAAAAAAA but when I get some time for myself I want to play the piano….but I want to play the way Mickey Gilly’s plays…remember him. Here is a clip…something is really wrong with these two singing I’ll Fly Away..but you have to love the piano!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YN4NWHyTSSc

@Brunettekoala, tried surfing for the first time this summer. Loved it. If I were a bit closer to the beach i would add that one back in for sure.
I love to make gifts so I’d love to improve as a photographer and get a new camera and also learn to knit.
I’d like to take up kayaking as well ….done it a few times but not enough to say it’s really a hobby.
ANd I’d like to improve my distance and bike longer distances.

1. Learn photoshop. (I’ve no good excuse since my husband works for the company that makes it!)
2. Learn to do one of the sports my husband does so I can join in instead of being a spectator with a camera. (ah, but the camera part is MY hobby!)
3. Be a better writer/communicator.

So many things
Knitting/crocheting I don’t even know if there is a difference.
Sewing. My mom does it as a profession and I’m clueless.
I wish I could paint. I think you’ve either got it or you don’t and I ain’t got it.
Really, I just want to be able to make something and sell it on etsy.com. I would feel like I’d arrived in hobby land at that point. LOL.
Speak Spanish. I would love to be able to interact with those that speak it in our area.
Would love to get better at photography/Photoshopping.
Brush up on my piano skills.
Just realized the question was which hobby was NEXT. I have no clue! I just want to be good at all of it!
.-= Amy´s last blog ..Friday Ramblings =-.
I’d like to learn to play the clarinet. And I also want to learn to build web sites. Can’t decide which one I have the best shot at accomplishing.

Looking forward to your video taking this guy on! Maybe your post tomorrow should be how you get started with taking on a hobby like the playing Harmonica?
I need to think of what hobby I would like to develop next. Still trying to master the art of blogging.
.-= Lindsey´s last blog ..A Great Day =-.
I’m gonna need three lifetimes just to get to do all I want with the hobbies that I have now! In the last couple years I’ve added container gardening, blogging, photography and quilting. Two weeks ago the Lord opened the door to allow me to facilitate a small ladies Bible study. But I’d still like to brush up on my French (took two years in HS- 37 yrs ago!!) and learn Japanese. Oh, and I’d LOVE to learn to fly a plane! Maybe AFTER my nap.
.-= Pearl´s last blog ..What is God Preparing? =-.
Pete, DUDE! I am so with you on the Harmonica thing. I have had one for 10 years and still haven’t had time to learn. Now I’m inspired. If we start now maybe we can duet at the Cross Point Christmas service. On second thought….maybe not.
I should take advantage of my husbands profession and learn to fly!
@Amy, girl you better get buys. You’ve got a lot of work to do.
Haha – I bought my husband a harmonica a few holidays ago and he just loved it!
As for me, here are the things I want to learn:
1. Spanish (I think I’m getting Rosetta Stone for my birthday!)
2. Knitting
3. Gardening
4. Maybe a little sewing
I would like to have more “basic” skills in case we ever need to be self-sufficient like they used to be in the old days. You never know what could change! (And Spanish is quickly becoming a basic skill here in Texas!)
.-= Vanity of Vanities´s last blog ..Friendship Fridays =-.
1. Publish – my memoirs most likely
2. Acoustic guitar (12-string)
3. Piano
4. Be in a worship band (after mastering #2 & #3)
1. Tight rope walking
2. Guitar
3. Organizational efficiency
I really want to learn harmonica too! Think Johnny Parks or Vicki Beeching – well that might be a stretch right now, but I’ll keep practicing.
.-= Paul´s last blog ..Out of the Way Eatery =-.
i have a harmonica too. got it years ago for Christmas when my sister got her guitar. the video reminded me of memphis. not sure why.
i’m hoping to learn more about design by creating greeting/note cards. yes it is dorky but that’s ok.
you know what’s funny? as that video played, a google ad at the bottom says “become a minister in your spare time”. interesting. maybe people who play the harmonica want to be in ministry? then again, maybe not.
what i’d like to dive into…
photography with a legitimate camera (one with real zoom, and a real lens aka no point and shoot), write a book, and learn to play the acoustic guitar.
who knows what’s after that…

You mentioned thinking about drums, and so did Lex. No, I don’t drum, but I wondered if you knew that the pastor of one of St. Paul, Minnesota’s megachurches (Greg Boyd, pastor of Woodland Hills church) not only plays the drums, but is the drummer in a rock band, called NDY (for Not Dead Yet). He also writes a blog from time to time to (though not as regularly as yours) – at christusvictorministries.org.
so now i’ve thought more about this and i want to learn to dance, but alas, I have no partner. My husband would not do this I don’t think.

I would love to learn how to sew and knit!

I just spent the week with a friend that is not afraid to tackle home improvement projects. They are hobbies to her. She had a leaky roof and was not afraid to rip into the dry wall and insulation, since she knows how to repair it. She also learned how to do some electrical wiring. I’m so impressed and inspired by this that I’m thinking of trying to patch a hole in our drywall and re-caulk the showers and tubs at my house. My husband was pretty happy to hear this!

I think it takes all of 10 minutes (probably less) to learn to play the harmonica better than Bob Dylan LOL
Good for you!
I always wanted to learn the drums, or guitar. I was always jealous of the guys who would bring a guitar to strum and who would have loads of friends. I think playing music is a great way to find peace and also inspiration.
.-= Tony´s last blog ..My New Car =-.
First of all that was pretty solid. Love the Harmonica Beatbox..
The problem for me is I never have enough time to spend on the hobby. Currently I am in the 6th or 7th year of “learning” the Piano. I am learning to speak spanish, which I get to practice all the time. I want to write a song (bucket list item), and I just picked up the guitar a little over a week ago to see if I can do anything with that. Now all I need is to make time to work on these hobbies, which is the toughest part of all…
B.J., hurry up and write your first #1 hit so you can take our families down to Florida on your dime!
My stepdaughter actually took up harmonica last spring. There’s a great guy who teaches it at World Music over by Cancun on Hwy 70. She had private lessons every other week, but I think he teaches a group class, too…
I’m now picturing a sermon with a blues riff on your harmonica after each major point.
