Cross Point North Launching
In a few weeks, after a lot of praying and planning, we’re finally getting ready to launch our 3rd Cross Point campus just North of Nashville.
Several months ago we introduced our latest campus pastor, Kevin Cook, to the CP community. He’s an awesome guy and we’re so excited to have he, his wife Erin, and his entire family as part of the team (check out those good looking kids).
So why Cross Point North? I thought Jenni Catron summed it up well the other day when she wrote…
Because new campuses reach new people. People who are disconnected from church… and more importantly from God might just be willing to try this new campus that is opening in their community. Cross Pointers who have been driving 45 minutes one way to church are going to be able to invite their friends and neighbors to a campus closer to home. Cross Pointers who have not found a place to serve with their gifts are stepping up to build the teams that will make this campus possible.
Here’s a little video featuring Kevin Cook talking about the launch…

I don’t see a video, but from the photo they look like a lovely bunch!
God’s blessing on the new church!

I think it’s great that we are opening another campus! Hopefully it will allow us to give the attention we need to give to those in the church. When a church gets large it’s always good to spread it out and allow it to grow individually! Praying for the North Campus!

I am curious why you start another campus rather than another church. Isn’t it a little arrogant to think that only CP can meet the needs of the community and therefore there needs to be a CP in every part of town? I am all for planting churches throughout the community, but why can’t it have it’s own teaching pastor? Why is it so important that they get to hear the wisdom that can only come from the pastor at the home base.
We have a local church that is starting satellite campuses all over the area and I fear it is about their ego, not their desire to reach others (not saying this about you, people I trust speak highly of you).
Just thinking out loud…sorry if it comes across judgmental.

First of all, congrats on the new campus and may it reach many with the grace and love of God.
DB, I think you have a very valid point. There is a danger in any church spreading “it’s” gospel when this kind of thing happens. I feel certain that is not the case here but it could be a trap for some.
One positive thing I see is a consolidation of resources in planting churches in this way which is a very practical thing especially in our current economy. Let’s not count out too that this could be what God is calling CP to do. I believe CP represents the rising up of the church which is being demonstrated by the laying down of pride and self promotion.
I don’t know if you got to read this post http://withoutwax.tv/2009/07/22/my-nagging-narcissism/ but I think when any leader opens up like this he is doing his best to be straight up with his church and get closer to God. I don’t go to CP but happen to know a number of the folks on staff and they will be the first to tell you that don’t always do it right but I can tell you that is what they strive for. They have a good group on staff who I belive is not afraid to pull one of their own aside and draw possible personal problems to their attention. Accountability is the key to keeping the egos in check.
I do think you have a valid concern which I admire you for being brave enough and level headed enough to present. I know if you ever see anything that you think is heading in the wrong direction with CP the staff will be the first to want to know as long as it is presented in love. The way God intended.

@DB – I’m not a member at CP but have been following their amazing progress from afar for a few years now. Let me suggest to you that having a new campus IS starting a new church. When you have the gifts in place that appear to honor God and grow the Kingdom, using technology to spread those gifts around not only makes good sense, it is great stewardship of Kingdom resources. Further, Kevin Cook and his family will be providing an equally important function – loving the folks of CP North – LIVE and in-person. @DB, I don’t doubt your zeal for the Lord or the Kingdom – but sometimes God’s people really do the right thing for the right reasons. Praise God!
Praying for your newest ministry….

Congrats and keeping your mission in prayer.
In New England, there are no churches that have ever attempted to do a campus/satellite church, until now. Our church just talked this weekend about how we are planting one within our state and I am excited to see how it goes.

Congratulations Pete and the entire Cross Point Staff. Having planted two churches, I know it’s alot of hard work. Praying for you guys, that God will bless your socks off and many people will come to know Christ thru this new venue.
Blessings in our Savior, Pete!

Great news! Must be a busy time for all of you.
The new campus will be in my prayers.
@DB, I think that’s a fair question. We do both here at CP. We are huge believers in the local church. We financially support church plants every year that have nothing do with CP. We will continue to do that as we believe church planting is essential.
We’ve also discovered that the one church in multiple locations is also a valid and amazing way to not only reach but disciple people in our community.
We start a vision series this weekend where in week 3 I’ll be discussing our multi-site strategy.
Thanks for asking bro.
Awesome!!! Next stop for CP….. Little Rock, Arkansas????

Pete, when you announced “CP North”, I immediately assumed you were going to start a new church in Wisconsin, where we will be moving to in January!
I am still holding out for “CP East”, which will be strategically located next to the Caney Fork.
I agree that DB has an excellent point. However, I can vouch for CP…they were helping financially to plant other local churches even when CP itself was meeting in an elementary school “cafetorium” (the good ‘ole days). You can be assured that this model is not the genesis of hubris, but is truly meant to reach people for Christ in an efficient manner. My wife and I currently attend a church here in St. Louis that has been successfully employing this model for many years. It is not “The Way” to do things, but is “Another Way”.
I’m fascinated by multi-site campuses. I have never been to one,
I’m very curious as to how it works, as I never seem to be able to pay close attention to videos and prefer a “live” person but a friend of mine visited a multi-site campus in Seattle and said it was great, no different from being in a large venue and watching the big screens instead of the person in the middle of the stage.
This type of model makes sense on so many different levels: Excellent preaching, a location that is in proximity to those in the community, economic sense, etc.
My one concern is if my church were to become multi-site, and we’re not large but still could happen because we desire to reach others in different communities, if it were to happen where I’m at would I be willing to leave my closer friends to “start all over”? in a new location where things are unknown and different? I suppose this is where concepts of being missional, surrender, and being a servant comes into play instead of being a consumer.

@Nate VZ, CP north, north campus is the Wisconsin one. You’ve got to kee up bro.
I’ve been missing you guys a lot lately. We need to catch up. I’ve got lots of Montana stories.
Great stuff CP! What I love about this strategy is that it takes proximity seriously. People need to be closer to each other to actually experience true Christian community and to actually reach the place where they live. Praying that CP North will make the Kingdom flourish in N. Nash.

This URL link might be a good read for “church planting” and/or “campus planting”….

I dunno…. everyone will probably pile on here and give me grief for pointing out (via Mr. Thune’s post) the difference between “want” and “need” and the usual stereo-typical process church leaders go through to supposedly reach people for Jesus… as they plant new churches and/or new campuses…
So, let me have it, if you must… but maybe before anyone does…. try being honest about the truth of the gospel not being about bells and whistles and big screens and etc… and please, don’t give me the “how Twitter and FaceBook and websites and blogs and putting on a show with video screens and lighting and having all the available technology” are the best answers to ministering face to face / person to person with people…. that simply is self-justification… and the “campus” model is still questionable…
Willow Creek probably stands out as the best example of how the Mega-Church idea was really a bona-fide failure, even though hundreds, if not thousands, of church leaders followed the pack and swore for years it was the “end all / be all” regarding contemporary church in America…. and to me, that’s the same thing that may end up happening with the “campus” model… because it, in no way, is biblically sound…. it’s an aberrant version of the gospel… it removes the Pastor from the people, one step, by putting his smiling, preaching face on a satellite feed and supposes that to be “personal”… and, in fact, it is extremely impersonal and disconnected… in the realest sense… (but maybe not in the sense that we, as a culture, have bought into TV and Movies and Videos and the self-satisfying cocoon comfort of sitting in front of a computer and spreading the gospel via social networking because we’re too lazy to actually roll up our sleeves and share the gospel in person)…
My 2¢, of course… and I’m sure I’ll be blasted here…. for going against the “feel good”, “what’s hip”, and “don’t be critical” grain….
But, I can live with that… and perhaps I’m simply a voice in the wilderness here…. whenever I visit…
