My first marriage was troubled from almost its start. Finally it ended. Afterwards, I moved from San Diego’s suburbs to the Pacific Beach area. There I met a lady who became a good (though never romantic) friend. Two years later, when I accepted a job in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, she told me “My grandfather lives there. You could room with him!” She arranged it, and I did.

Her former boyfriend also lived in Fort Lauderdale. A few months later, they made up. She came back to Florida, and they shared an apartment. It didn’t last. They had a fight, and he moved out.

Then she asked if I’d move in. “It wouldn’t mean any sex,” she said, “We’d just be roommates.”

Friends or not, it didn’t seem right. So I told her “no.” She took my decision well. But her grandfather didn’t! Angered, he tripled my rent. I couldn’t afford that, so I found a young man who needed a roommate, and moved.

‘Christopher’ attended Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, and often invited members of its young adult group to weekend dinners. I didn’t know any of them, so I usually went for walks while they visited. But one April night I had to finish my income tax, so I stayed and met his guests - including my present wife, Yvonne!

As we dated, we discovered she’d grown up in the same Chicago neighborhood I would have if my mother had lived. She’d worked in two Chicago banks, and my father had had accounts in both. She’d opened his account at one, and, after his death, closed it at the other. We’d probably seen each other once at one of those banks, though we hadn’t met. And, shortly before we met, we’d each prayed “God, would you send me someone I can love?”

It'll be 31 years next month.

I attended Eastern Kentucky University and had a similar experience with my roommate.

We both were involve with Campus Crusade for Christ and we dated about half the girls in CCC, and never ended up finding a wife there,(but the stories we could tell.)

Ten years later, I met my wife in the finals of a nine ball tournament in Houston, TX.

We were both dating someone else at that time and neither she or I thought we were a good match.

We just both liked playing pool. So we just started hanging out as buddies, watching football together, talking about our relationship problems, life, giving each other advise, and we ended up becoming best friends.

The rest is history,(and a long story), but I ended up marrying my best friend and getting two wonderful kids out of it too.

(But oh, how your blog makes me miss Kentucky and Tennessee.)

Michael - ouch - so sorry to hear you had such a rough experience with the first. Every couple is different (obviously) - for us, the dynamics of a good healthy argument (no name-calling, hissing, etc) can be invigorating and always brings us closer because we are able to talk through it - and we're just crazy about each other. But it's our personalities, too - we're both stubborn and passionate - and for us, that's what works well. Congrats on your new marriage celebrating 1 year!

My husband & I met in our college choir. We didn't start dating until the very end of my senior year & then he enlisted in the Army. As soon as he finished AIT, he was sent to Kuwait. While he was there, he decided that I was the one for him & we got engaged over the phone. We will celebrate our 17th anniversary tomorrow!

Paula,

Everybody always tells me how great the making up part is, but i kind of like not having to go through the tension of the fight in the first place. My first wife and I did enough fighting to last a lifetime, and unfortunately the making up wasn't as great as everyone told me it would be.

Mike was an usher at church when I walked in with 3 tiny babies under 4 1/2!!!!!! He sat us that day and later found out I was raising those babies all by myself...the rest is blissful history!!!

PPS - my parents celebrated 50 years of marriage last year!

They met at a drive-in diner in the '50's. My mom was the waitress on roller skates - my dad was in his way cool turquoise convertable sytlin' car with his friends... can we say "Grease"?
