The Antitheses of Spiritual Growth

I love my community group. I love the…

conversations

prayers

laughter

and

sharpening

that happens when we’re together.

Last week was our last meeting before our summer break. We just finished a study and decided to let our last night together be a hang out night. We played “Spoons.” I don’t know if you’ve ever played Spoons or not, but the game does not lend itself to spiritual growth. In fact, Spoons may be the antithesis of spiritual transformation. In one night we defeated all the spiritual growth we’ve experienced over the last year.

Just wondering….What’s your favorite card game or board game?

And without further ado, let me introduce you to the game of Spoons and our community group at it’s worst…

oooooooooh I have never heard of Spoons but this has intrigued me. I am now on a quest to find fellow Spoon-ers. :D

I am a hardcore competitor when it comes to cards/board games. In fact….my family doesn’t like to play with me very much. They say I am not fun to play with, I say they are scared to lose.

Seems that they don’t enjoy me singing the Donald Trump theme song “money, money, monnnnnn-nay” when I collect rent on Monopoly or my victory dance/chant with my 50+ point words in Scrabble. hhhmph!

Looks like you guys had (and have) a great time with friends….awesome!

Spoons is awesome. Some of my students and youth leaders play it from time-to-time. I have to be prepared to teach on cheating and good sportsmanship the following week after we do though. Why? Because my wife likes to cheat.

Never got into the game, but had a lot of fun watching others play. To add even more excitement to the game try it with plastic spoons or even better, forks. It gets real exciting when they break.

FUN competition does lots to build community.

  4. Falguni Patel June 11, 2009 at 9:22 am #

Speed, Uno,and Phase 10 are some of my favorites ….I’m pretty competitive when it comes to card/board games ;)

  5. Sarah June 11, 2009 at 9:26 am #

I love UNO. Racko is a close second, but it’s a 4 person or less game which is what makes it 2nd for me.

Taboo, Catchphrase, Boggle, Scrabble…anything to do with words.

But Spoons is the best. You get to see that there’s a little bit of “devious” in every one with that game! ;^)

  9. Chris June 11, 2009 at 9:49 am #

You can hear the Kingdom grow one game of spoons after another. It’s like clapping to keep fairies from dying or something. Seriously. Like they don’t play it in heaven (between worship sets)?

I love Spoons! We used to play all the time when I was little.

That was definitely the classic “fake out” move, trying to get someone else to pick up a spoon when they didn’t have it. My dad used to do it all the time. We play if the person picked up the spoon and didn’t have the hand then they are out!!! (We are hard core competitive in my family). Lots of scratched fingers when we played it. Oh, man….I miss those days! :)

I love spoons! We have taught the students in our youth group how to play, but when it gets down to the last two we set the spoon on the other side of the room. Then there is a knock down drag it out race to get the last spoon!

You pass LEFT? What kind of backwards, left-passing, spoon people are you? You pass RIGHT in spoons, people. R.I.G.H.T.

And you wanna spice it up a little? Stack the spoons in the middle. Don’t lay them side by side.

Disclaimer: people with long fingernails will most likely draw blood from the short fingernail peeps. Beware.

We used to play spoons, egyptian rat race and bullcrap at our church camps. We had to make a no jewelry rule, for safety. I’m not sure what people must’ve thought about a group of teens from the IMPACT team (a ministry group) sitting at a table yelling “bull” and getting “violent” playing cards, but those are summers I’ll never forget…..These days i play alot of Candyland and Chutes and Ladders.

Excuse me. We are on the verge of entering a depression created by corruption at the highest levels of our government intertwined with Wall Sreet global elite banksters. Our Federal Reserve has printed TRILLIONS of dollars that they say Congress and the people have no right to audit. Our currency is being destroyed. We are on the verge of global catastrophe… and you wanna know if I like “spoons”?? Please pardon me, but are you playing the fiddle while the USA burns?? The pastors of the USA have failed in their duty to be watchmen. We’re seeing the merger of corporatism and government on unprecedented scales – our very lives are in peril… and you are focussed on games??

    Where are the men??

  23. Pete Wilson June 11, 2009 at 12:38 pm #

@Laura, You said: “The pastors of the USA have failed in their duty to be watchmen. We’re seeing the merger of corporatism and government on unprecedented scales – our very lives are in peril… and you are focused on games??”

You busted me. I was having a great night of fellowship with my community group. I’ll go back to saving the world tonight. :)

Hahaha…loved that post and video. My favorite game is bunco. You are right that it is an excuse for women to get together for a night out, but it is really a game! It really is! It takes so much skill ;)
I work with kids with behavior/emotional disorders as part of my caseload (I am a speech language pathologist) and playing games like Uno is a great way to teach many social skills lessons…good sportsmanshop, turn taking, being fair, tone of voice, etc. And you learn alot about people when you play games with them. Also love Apples to Apples.

  25. Christine June 11, 2009 at 12:47 pm #

Wow! That’s a pretty committed group of Spoons players! I have such a fond memory of playing Spoons with my uncle shortly after one stroke and before the one that ultimately claimed his life. That game is always good for a ton of laughter, no matter who’s involved. But playing with him meant listening to him make fun of his physical limitations that made it virtually impossible for him to grab anything quickly with his right hand and yet still manage to beat us by being sneaky! Such a fun memory!

In high school it was cutthroat games of Hearts. In college it was Spades. Now it’s Candyland and Hi-Ho Cherry-O with my little ones. Looking forward to the days I can play Spoons with them and teach the finer points of strategy! ;)

Spoons! We played this all the time at my Grandparents’ house. But, we kept the spoons in another room – elbows flying, people tripping over each other – ahh, family fun. We were very competitive – and still are . . . case in point – I broke my wrist last summer playing backyard volleyball. It was game point and we won, so it wasn’t all bad. ;)

Shows Christians can have fun too. Let me know how the saving the world thing goes. It sounds like Laura needs a hobby or maybe a fellowship group like yours. It might help with the gloom and doom attitude. God loves us all and will see us through the crisis and any other that comes our way. I put my trust in him.

I love Family Game Night, we could be playing anything from Hungry Hungry Hippo to Star Wars Monopoly (so the kids can howl and laugh at me while I butcher the pronunciations…), it’s great to have some family time. Brings us closer.

I have a feeling it would do the same with a group of friends/colleagues, etc.

My husband taught me to play Canasta. Other than Crazy Eights, it’s the only card game I know.

Could you play “spoons” with forks instead, or would that work? :o ) Wait, knives!! LOL

  35. ash June 11, 2009 at 1:06 pm #

Of course I love word games like Scrabble and Boggle, but those aren’t great party games. Love Phase 10 and Apples to Apples! Game nights are some of my faves with our community groups!

Are you freaking kidding me with that comment Laura? Do you have kids? When your kids want to run in the sprinkler or eat peanut butter out of a jar, do you tell them that there are children who don’t have water and have nothing to eat?

Yes, the world is a horrible place. It has been since sin entered the world. But it is also a beautiful place. A place where God gives you brief respites from the treachery of it all. Where you can fellowship with friends and family and simply be grateful for what God allows us to do.

If you are a pastor; If you understand the incredible heartache and pressures associated with carrying the burdens of your flock, and still see fit to criticize Pete Wilson, then I suppose I should just shut and let you have your say. If you are not, I will tell you that he probably does more in one year to give hope to the hopeless than I will ever do in a lifetime. Tell me different, and I will call you a liar. Sorry, Pete. You know how I get…

Pete Wilson, you should be ashamed of yourself! Playing spoons when there are souls to be won! Asking about games when the destruction and termination of life as we know it on the horizon!! Our country is on the verge of a depression the likes of which the world cannot fathom, and you’re posting a b-l-o-g? Blasphemy!!

You should be more like Jesus! He would NEVER dream of turning water in to wine so that a party could continue! He would not THINK about attending a traditional religious dinner when the very lives of His children were in trouble! He woudn’t DREAM of sleeping during a catastrophic storm! Considering the physical hunger of 5,000 listeners rather than focusing solely on their spiritual hunger?? Completely OUT of the question!

    You should be ASHAMED!!!!

(Oh, and all that singing, dancing, and laughter that David wrote about in the majority of the Psalms? Absolute gibberish! There will be no singing, dancing, laughter, fellowship, joy, or happiness in heaven! Not with all the work to be done!!!)

The question is: Will there be a Spoons tournament at the upcoming Cross Point picnic?

Life is not about money. Life is about love. Pete you and your community group were loving on eachother so good for you! I realize life is serious, but even when Jesus’ life was at risk he communed with his brothers. I see nothing wrong with that! I’m not sure how to play spoons and now I’m kind of scared to learn. My family always played Othello- that game where you have little circles- one side black, one side white, and you try to make the whole board your color. We had beach tournaments. Fun times!

  42. Sarah June 11, 2009 at 1:11 pm #

To paraphrase Andy Stanley- To change America for the good, you first have to change Americans. You do that by investing and building relationships. A community group does that by supporting each other, having bible study for discipleship, and having a good ‘ol time. And hopefully those people influence and change the community around them.

If we are ever going to send the message that God is not boring, the bible is not irrelevant and boring, and neither are Christians, then we have to live that out. It’s a domino effect, a slow one, but still- transformation of our crumbling world does not happen over night and neither is it done solely by the pastors that inhabit it.

Oh, and you have not had hours of fun til you have played SkipBo. Yeah. Keep on visioneering Pete.

  58. Rich Barrett June 11, 2009 at 2:04 pm #

    I’m with Laura.

When Bill Clinton called Pete and asked how to solve the financial crisis, Pete said, “Make it mandatory for lending institutions to give ‘no-doc’ loans because it is an inalienable right to own a house in the suburbs.”

When George Bush called Pete and asked how to solve the financial crisis, Pete said, “Keep the interest rates low so that the incentive to save & invest will be minimized, and continue instructing banks to allow people to buy houses they can’t afford. Oh, and bail out a few industries with taxpayer money we don’t have.”

When Obama called Pete and asked how to solve the financial crisis, Pete said, “Increase taxes those who achieve and those who give charitably. Print trillions we don’t have, but don’t give it to successful businesses, give it to failing ones.”

When Jesus called Pete and asked how to solve the financial crisis… Guess what? Jesus didn’t call Pete to solve the financial crisis. He called Pete to live out the joy of life in Christ—to love God and to love people—and to do so in such a contagious way that more and more people want to know God’s love and forgiveness.

So, Laura and I blame Pete for the financial crisis, for sure. He gave those presidents some bad advice.

But I give him big props showing God’s love and joy with his community group!

    @ Laura,
:-) I’m an accountant. But I don’t have to be an accountant 24/7. Likewise, Pastors are allowed ‘down’ time too. I understand that you may be a bit ‘freaked’ about the state of ‘things’ right now (it’s no better in the UK where I live). However, at the end of the day, this is someone’s PERSONAL blog. Where they write about their PERSONAL life. Including (but not limited to) their job, which involves saving souls and being a watchman.

I don’t mean to sound unfriendly but can’t think of a better way to phrase this, so please excuse my clumsiness – if you don’t like the tone, content or focus of this (or any) blog, my best advice would be not to continue reading it. There are lots of blogs out there in cyberspace, I’m sure it wouldn’t be difficult to find something that suits your needs and tastes.

That said, I do hope you stick around. I love the whole ‘community’ thing going on here and would miss it if I ‘left’.

    Take care Laura. X

It was a safe fun place to go crazy with cards. I love Nerts, pretty much any game. I love interacting and going nuts, its one place I totally let loose. Pete, I found you from Billy’s blog. We love the game Spoons, we play it as a family… I loved watching your small group play.

I also attend a CrossPoint church. Ours is in Ellijay. We are a small band of believers discovering the intimacy of relationship.

    It’s nice to meet you!

I can’t believe I have been missing out on the opportunity to discuss politics this evening. By the title, I thought this was going to be another “light” topic that you typically employ 2-3 days of the week…how wrong I was.

Spoons is very fun and I haven’t played in two decades (you know how I love games).

During times of crisis (real and perceived) a “witch-hunt” typically emerges. Right now, it is cool to go after CEO’s, bankers, doctors and…evidently…pastors. Most people find comfort in blaming others for failure or pain (I know that I do). It is in these times that we really need to look inward, honestly admit mistakes and develop a strategy to improve the future.

I likely share many views with Laura. I agree strongly with Laura that a responsible citizenry should not sit by as Nero did, playing the fiddle, while Rome burned. Rather, they must have a firm grasp of history, a desire to participate in the present and an eye on the future…however, on occasion one should engage in a fun diversion of spoons, cornhole, bacci or lawn jarts…just don’t be an idiot climbing around up on your roof!

@Pete-hey I have never heard of “Spoons” but it looked like you all were having a blast. I kinda got the gist of the idea of how to play but what are the guidelines(I say this because if I say “rules” someone might think me too legalistic)?
@Kristi Ottmar-I have also played Hand and Foot. I never realized that it is a version of Canasta. That is fun.
@iwearmyheartsonmyhip-I so know what you mean about the Candyland and Chutes and Ladders. I always just make it near the end of Chutes and Ladders and end up going all the way back down to the beginning. Not a game to play real close to nap time, yet, that’s the game that always gets picked. Do you think it is a conspiracy?

    @Laura-
It sounds like you are very very upset about the condition of this nation and what th government is doin. And, I totally understand. I am really concerned about the health care situations as it will directly affect my daughter, my husband and me. All three of us have chronic terminal illnesses that have no cure. All of us require the very medications, therapies, and diagnostics that threaten to be severely restricted. There is one thing I would like to tell you. God is not in a recession. God owns the cattle on a thousand hills. It is not the government that provides for me, but rather the Almighty God. My hope is in Him. As we have seen a lot, man fails. Pastors fall short. They give in to temptation and sin. Only Jesus overcame the world. That being said, I have a choice. I can chose to live in total bondage to fear of what could happen or I can chose to live knowing that my Jesus came that I might have life and life more abundantly. Or Joy Unspeakable and full of Glory. It’s there for the taking. All I have to do is figure out which one sounds the best and go for it. I am not saying that we do not have a responsibility to those who do not know Jesus. That would be failure on my part. No. But there are too many people out there that have no desire to be a Christian because they have seen too many that are without joy. I don’t blame them for not wanting to have it if that’s what it is all about. Not at all. Those of us who come through the most difficult of circumstances and still have joy in their lives well that says more than words ever could.
So, Laura, how can I pray for you? Has your trouble become so much that you need help carrying it? I’ll help. I don’t know you and you don’t know me but God said we are all brothers and sisters in Christ. That makes us all part of the body.

That’s good stuff girl. I needed that reminder.

Spoons rocks!! When my relatives get together for a game it gets crazy competitive. My senior citizen Mom actually became bloodied from a somewhat enthusiastic game a couple years ago.

My favorite card game is I Doubt It – where you try and get of all your cards by basically bluffing! It does not lend itself to spiritual growth. LOL Neither does Sorry! and the kids and I play that all the time. Sometimes you just need mindless recreation, not educational toys…!

Spoons IS my favorite game….LOVED playing it growing up ….we had a HUGE long table so we could have 12 to 15 people playing at one time….with several decks of cards. I’m REALLY good…..there is a skill involved! I challenge you spoon god!

  82. Amanda June 12, 2009 at 9:34 am #

Spoons…wow. I hadn’t thought of that game since my last youth retreat (10 years ago, thankyouverymuch) when it ended in violence and pranks. I stick to euchre now. But if you were to ask my family, I shouldn’t play that either.

  83. Todd S June 12, 2009 at 9:45 am #

I love the history of the game as depicted by the all knowing wikipedia: “Spoons originated in the United States Penitentiary, Leavenworth in 1972 when inmates, wanting of an activity to pass the time, devised a rudimentary card game that could be played with the few items they had on hand, namely, a deck of cards and blunt flatware[1]. It is rumored that the game was first played with crudely fashioned shivs, but as gameplay casualties mounted, guards confiscated the deadly game pieces, leaving the prisoners to search for alternatives. Sausages were used briefly but ultimately proved too slippery. Finally, the prisoners settled on spoons[2].”

I think playing with shivs would have made it more fun, but even less churchy i guess. :)

We play a game called Pit. It is awesome and loud. AND, it is based on the stock market commodity trades, so maybe you could use it to hone your trading skillz and help bring the country out of the recession.

Oh! the dangerous game of Spoons! I played it once, but I didn’t know what I was getting into. If anyone in the group has nails, you need to have band aids and Bactine on hand, LOL. Who’d ever thought a card game could be so dangerous?! Dangerous but fun!

Hubby & I LOVE to play Hand & Foot (I think it’s a canasta game) with another couple– our best friends. Lots of fun!!! Wives usually win, but lately the guys have been whuppin’ up on us. I would say they’re cheating, but I just can’t believe that our Bible study leading friend could do that…maybe I’d better go back and watch that Spoons vid again, paying closer attention to Pastor Pete…yeah…

Hey Pete, life is hard, but God is so good! Thanks for bringing some good ol’ fun to us, because we could use it in this fallen world. Smiled at the fun you all had while I watched the vid.

@Todd S, I love that you looked that up. Hilarious. I figured it was probably originally a drinking game.

Looks (and sounds) like your group had a great time!

Scrabble is my favorite. It’s fun, and it involves words (and spelling).

@Todd S-What is PIT? My curiosity is peaked

  89. Annie June 14, 2009 at 1:43 pm #

I remember playing this game at camp. Then the person who got ‘SPOONS’ had to go through the rickets. That was where they crawled between everyone’s legs and got smacked on the bottom! Course, I am sure that part of the game has been eliminated today! My favorite board game was Monopoly, favorite card game was Hearts and favorite all time video game is Tetris.

    i love spoons.

sometimes, my friends and i modify the rules a bit. instead of grabbing spoons, you have to stick out your tongue and the last person who does that is out. it’s fun playing with people who get so into the game that they forget to look up, haha. :)

@ Kels–Pit is similar to spoons, except that you have cards with commodities on them that you have to trade. Trading takes place by shouting how many cards you need to trade. Once you get a certain number that match (it varies depending on the number of people playing), you grab a spoon or whatever from the table. Like spoons, the last one to get one is out. There are also two special cards–the bear and the bull. The bull is a wild card; the bear has the same effect at the end as not getting a spoon.

  96. David Bryant June 24, 2009 at 6:34 am #

Some friends play “Extreme Spoons”. Basically it is the same game except you put the spoons in another room. Everyone sits on the floor, and when someone gets their cards they jump up and run. Tackling, shoving and any other technique that helps you get a spoon is legal.
