Summertime

jett-gage-brewer-wilson-slipslide

We went to hang out over at my Dad’s house the other night and he broke out the Slip & Slide. It’s now officially summer. Nothing says summertime like the good ole’ Slip & Slide.  Jett decided to add a little soap to the slide to make it faster. It worked a little too well.

I can remember spending a lot of time on these when I was a kid. I always hated the hidden rock. Ouch!  This has to be one of the most dangerous summer yard activities ever invented. Truth be known when nobody is watching I still might enjoy a couple runs on one of these.

What says summer to you?

It’s always summer in Miami. But Hurricanes put the official stamp on it.

I’m partial to Winter myself. :-)

@Christi R., I twittered the other day about “lightning bugs” and I couldn’t believe the number of people who’ve never seen one. That’s crazy!

To me nothing says summers like margarita’s and steak on the grill. :-)

Ok, real answer, nothing says summer like margarita’s and steamed shrimp on the grill. :-) :-)

@Harold, funny thing. I was just thinking summertime used to mean to me your porch swing. Big ideas were cooked up out there.

Nothing says summer to me like the smell of suntan lotion on our kids at the beach, the sound of the ocean waves crashing on the sand, the primal end-of-school-year “ROAD TRIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” scream, outdoor church services, ditching the winter gear, reading outside in the hammock while listening to chickadees.

We have a few lighting bugs, but we mostly have mosquitoes and june bugs :o )

Living in the great white north, our summer lasts for about, oh, 7 days, not consecutively ;) To us, absence of snow means hope of summer.

Hooray for lightning bugs! We saw a neat presentation about lightning bugs at the Boston Museum of Science last week. No matter where you live, you can participate in their Firefly Watch https://www.mos.org/fireflywatch/, even if you prefer to call them “lightning bugs,” like me.

Summer for me, hmmm…sleeping in, going camping. Swimming and most of all a week or two at “camp”. The ring of dirt around the mouth or smeared on the forehead from hours spent outside instead of inside.
Here in Redding, summer appeared in early May. Then, it disappeared and now it is cool and raining. HUH? This IS not what we are use to. It gets in the hundred’s here, usually. We have been up to 117 degrees before. Yech!

Wow! The Slip N Slide has come a long way since my daughter used to play on one 20 something years ago! Remember… they were just long, narrow pieces of yellow plastic. No cool sprinklers or air pillows at the end back then!!
What a great pic of the kids having fun!

I used to get to stay up later in summer and i would watch reruns of I Love Lucy and eat alot because I had been swimming all day and I would be a little burned and my eyes would burn with chlorine. That is summer to me. I Love Lucy, food, sunburns, chlorine eyes, popsicles, and board games. More board games were always played in the summer.

Slip and Slides are the best! Specially if you put it going down a hill. Back in the day there used to be a commercial on TV for Slip and slides and my volleyball coach used to sing it with new words:

    Sliiiiiip, Slip and Slide.
Turn the water on, let the kids wreck the lawn.
    Sliiiip, Slip and Slide.

(It really only sounds good to the jingle of the commercial, but everytime I hear about Slip and Slides I think of that :)

What says summer to me? Being able to go for my bike ride at lunchtime without taking so much time getting ready because of all the clothing, etc that you have to wear because it is too cold to just wear cycling shorts and a jersey. Oh, I can sweat while riding and not freeze. Summer is here!

    BTW…I call them fireflies, too!

  35. katdish June 6, 2009 at 5:41 am #

June bugs, love bugs glued to your car, fire ant piles under the slip and slide = bad things about summer.

Fireworks on the 4th of July, making a sand castle with the kids on the beach, snowcones, summer movies and sleeping in = good thing about summer.

  43. Susan June 7, 2009 at 11:49 am #

    Two words: summer camp!!

I’m working as a camp counselor this summer, and I just got back last night from a staff retreat. Even though I was only there for about a day, I absolutely love it. This summer is going to be amazing!!

Summer to me also comes from the happy squeal/scream I let out once I’m done school for the summer; days and nights down the shore, sleeping in (except at camp). I love summer! :D

I’ve been a Dodger fan in SoCal my whole life. Vin Scully’s voice is the epitome of the sound of summertime to me. That man has been calling Dodger games for over 50 years. It’s safe to say he has more games behind him than he has in front of him. It will be a terrifically sad day in my world when his in no longer the voice of summertime.

The smell of sunscreen, the scent of the campfires a mile away on the beach, watermelon that’s finally in season!

The laughter of kids as they run through the sprinklers, boogey boarding in S. CA surf, seashell hunting, limeade, iced tea, grilling dinner then eating it under the shade of the umbrella on the back porch.

And, really great is our church’s summertime baptisms and bonfire at the beach done a couple/three times during summer. Folks are treated to grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, singing worship, and then new believers are baptized in the surf by our pastoral staff. Really draws a crowd of beach-goers in the area, and food and the Gospel are shared with them too. Good stuff.
