I’ve been flying a lot lately but my fascination with flying has not decreased. I know I’m like a kid on a plane but I just can’t help it. I don’t understand why everyone on the plane acts like it’s normal that we’re cruising through the sky at 30,000 feet on a 187,000 pound hunk of steel.
My latest fascination is taking pics from the plane. Here are a few of my favorites from the past couple of weeks.
So, today’s “all-skate” question is… do you prefer an isle seat or a window seat?
I took this picture somewhere over the Caribbean on our way to the Dominican Republic.
I took this picture of the sun coming through the clouds right before we landed in the Dominican Republic.
As we were flying out of Miami I looked out my window to see another plane fly right underneath us. I was a bit freaked out but still caught a quick picture.
And this is still my favorite. Watching the sunset over Greenland (which ironically is not green at all) on a flight back from India. A moment I’ll never forget.

I prefer window b/c I like trying to figure out where in the world we are? But if it was up to me…I would like the whole row to myself for the price of one, so I can lay down

@falguni, for some reason I can’t sleep on a plane well. I can take a little 10 minute nap here and there but that’s about it.
I am a big woman, so I prefer overflowing into an aisle. TMI? Sorry….

aisle on a regular row.
anywhere on the emergency row.
preferably to the left of the person I’m sitting next to.

I prefer the window seats, but since I pretty much fall asleep the minute I get on a plane, it doesn’t matter all that much. I do like to look out the window when we’re landing and try to figure out where everything is (if I can keep my eyes open).
I’m a window man…I fly often and always try and determine what city or region of the country…rivers, highways and landmarks. However, I don’t think the folks sitting next to me always appreciate my commentary on the geography.
Thanks for sharing these – they are amazing! I have the same fascination and do the same thing. I ALWAYS request the window seat – otherwise, I’d be leaning over my neighbor the whole way!

@Nikki Jo, Oh my gosh, those are amazing!
Definitely a window seat. I’m all about seeing the ground or ocean below me. And like you, I’m always snapping pictures. Once, I flew late at night and I could have swore I could have reached out the window and touched the full moon. Now that was awesome… I wished I had took a picture of it to put on here!
Me…I like the window but since the only times I fly I’m with my girls they get the window. I like watching them get excited at what they see.

Window. Even though they prefer people with disabilities to have the isle & they offer to change my seat every time I’m a window girl. I’ve tried to take pictures out the window but I’m always sitting at a dirty window
Some day I’m getting pictures.

Window seat definitely!! I love looking out and seeing everything
Window… that way, when I do fall asleep, I will likely drool on the window instead of a fellow passenger.
love to fly… prefer window, but it doesn’t really matter to me as long as the window passenger doesn’t mind me peering over them to see out.
I choose a window seat
Fantastic pictures btw. There is something so beautiful about clouds in the sky
Definitely a window seat. With my hubby next to me in the aisle…then no one else will hear me snoring.
Oh, HAS to be window seat! I love looking out at various landforms/cities, etc…

HILARIOUS video from comedian on wonders of flying…and how most don’t “get it”
http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1094408204281&ref=share
Excerpt:
“People come back from flights and they tell you their horror stories. They act like their flight was like a cattle car in the 40s in Germany…
‘They made us sit there – on the runway – for 40 minutes!!’
Oh really, what happened next – did you fly, through the air, incredibly, like a bird, did you partake in the miracle of human flight, you noncontributing zero…”
Window window window! I prefer to sit on the left side of the plane but don’t really care so long as I get the window.
Here are a couple of pictures that I took from a plane going to or from Florida I think:

@Phil- you can sit near me anytime and give me a the flyby commentary.
I used to travel a had to have an aisle, but now life has slowed down and I love the window, I love to see what is going on down below. Flying to me is bizarre to say the least I don’t get it. I don’t understand how we can cruise along at 30k feet like its no big deal. It makes me understand a little more how there is a God to make such an amazing thing happen.

I love window seats on the wing. I love watching it flap up and down.
I love a window seat, however my bladder has never done well while traveling. Sometimes I’ll have to get up 3 times on a 4 hour flight…sometimes not that bad, but occasionally. So in honor of those flying with me, I opt for an isle seat. Fortunately, a majority of the times I’ve flown the flight was not packed and I have been able to get an entire row to myself and I’ll sit by the window.

@Jonnelle, great pictures. I’m so glad I’m not the only dork taking pictures from the plane.
@Cheryl, I have a Nikon d-60 but a few of those pics were taken with my iphone.
Pete – those pix are great! A couple might even make the “breath-taking” category! Thanks so much for sharing.
As for preference….Window. I get motion sick and in a window seat I can visually try to adjust for what my balance is fighting against. If all else fails – I can lay my head on the side of the plane and close my eyes rather than head bob in the aisle!

Aisle – as I am uber-claustrophobic.
I too have always been fascinated by flying for some of the same reasons. It always causes me to pause and think that not only did God create the ability for something like that to fly, but he created the ability in US to design something like that to fly. There is no other word beside majestic.
Just FYI – the plane you were probably flying on to India didn’t weight 187,000 – instead it probably weight 910,000 lbs!!

Andy Borgmann’s last blog post..Asher At First Baseball Game
I will take the ‘isle’ seat anytime. Sitting next to the ocean with a nice virgin pina colada sounds pretty good.
Now, on the plane… I will take either end as long as I am not stuck in the middle of people. Ends have their advantages. The window gives you a chance to see the world below unless you are on the wing and then, well, you get to see wing. Granted that wing is at 30,000 feet and moving at 600 miles an hour, but its still just a wing. And if something crazy happens to the wing while you are flying, do you really want to be the first person to witness it?
Now the ‘aisle’ seat allows you to lean your head out and see what’s going on in the plane where all the interesting people are. You can make faces at the crying baby or wave at the people who are in first class but can be seen through the semi-sheer ‘blanket’ that divides the classes. Shouting, “I see you!”, is fun to do while you are waving.
Of course the best part of the aisle seat is when the people sitting by the window need to get up. Stay your ground and make them crawl across you and as they are doing their best to straddle your legs without disturbing you too much, make this comment. “Geesh… could you layoff the peanuts, lady? My knees aren’t supposed to bend that way!!”

I personally don’t have a preference. We have 3 kids, so if I get my own seat at all, I’m happy. But on one trip a while back we had to listen to the guy behind us explain to everyone in earshot his theory that “the last row of the plane is the safest because if you smash into a mountain it will be the last to crumple”. As if the whole front of the plane was a giant airbag for him. He literally talked about it for the entire trip. Pretty ridiculous.

Window Seat. I also prefer to be alone… On my way to Colombia the first time, the whole back of the plane was completely empty, so I got it all to myself
It was awesome. And yes, flying is the best thing ever, I feel more like a kid on a plane then anything, really. It’s awesome

Aisle seat.
My upper legs are freakishly long, and I can’t fit in those seats properly.
Unless I can get a seat near the emergency exit, which I always try for. When I check in I always say, “My name is Sharkbait, and I know how to open an emergency door. Would you like me to sit next to it?”
Doesn’t usually work, but it’s worth a try.

I’ve only flown a couple times, and both were short trips within the US, so the most exciting part was seeing the cornfields I’ve seen all my life come into view when landing. No sunsets over Greenland or anything.
But I did find it to be absolutely amazing and I wanted a window seat each time.

I have that very same fascination too, Pete! I always try to figure out what things are and where I am in relation to them. When I flew to LA a few weeks ago I even picked out my house and took a picture!
Aisle, because if we crash, I don’t want to see how close we are to the ground, and also because I have this thing about letting people know that I need to crawl across them to go to the bathroom.

I always like sitting next to the window. I am usually the paranoid person looking around and wondering how everyone else is sleeping through all of it. We flew to Germany and I didn’t sleep the whole time cause I didn’t want to miss anything. ha
I prefer the front seat – front right… Sam can have front left.
I can never figure out why people sleep on a plane…at least on a short flight. You are sitting in a chair FLYING! It’s the coolest thing ever.
One of these days Im flying to Nashville…know of any good churches?
I prefer the window. Not so I can look out as I normally shut the shade anyway. I don’t want to have people climbing over me to use the bano, plus I don’t want to get hit with the carts. I monitor my fluid and food intake so that there is generally a slim-to-none chance that I’ll have to get up before we land on flights within U.S. Exit row every time, if possible.
@Paula, I’ve flown in the front left seat with your husband. Let’s just say the seat might have been a little wet when I got off the plane.
Something about taking off at a 90 degree angle and flying just a few feet off the river that did me in.
I can’t believe all the window seat people. I’m aisle seat all the way. I hate having to climb over people to use the restroom, or – WORST EVER – having to wake up a sleeping stranger because I just can’t wait any longer. Ugh.

Ok, that and my Ladybug doesn’t quite have that capability…oh, someday.
Window all the way or I get freaked out. But I’m with fal I like the whole row if I can get it. I don’t sleep well either but I stay up late the night before hand and I take some sleepy drugs to help. I don’t know how I would do in a flight over 4 hrs. My ADD would be real bad I’m sure. Love the pictures I have taken some over cities. I like to see if I know how the city is layed out from the sky
Gotta have an isle seat. Why? Here’s the tape that plays in my head…”If you HAD to get out of this seat and stand up how easy would it be????” If Im at the window I panic. Not kidding…full out panic. And the answer is yes, I can pretty much suck the fun out of anything!

window, I love being able to look out at the clouds and sun and take pictures myself lol… I act more like a kid than anyone I know. I just can’t imagine that we can fly that high above the ground in this little metal ‘airplane’. It never seems to get less fascinating…
Isle seat for me everytime. Window seats make me feel claustraphobic. I know that’s dumb being I can’t get off the plane anyway.

I hate to fly and will NEVER understand how that thing gets off the ground and stays in the air. So if my ticket says “window” I will offer it to you. It’s easier to get in the fetal position in the aisle from an aisle seat. It’s a great place to pray.

Okay..so I will make it complicated. It depends. I prefer the window seat especially if I am traveling with others and we are seated together. However, when traveling alone I like the aisle seat (to a degree) so if I have to get up and go to the bathroom…I don’t have to disturb anyone. However, if I am traveling alone and I am in my “introvert” mode…I like the window seat because I can tune out everything that is going on in the aisle..plus I can lean my head and take a nap.
Lastly, I am “anti” middle seat person…I absolute hate being stuck in the middle between two people…especially if I don’t know them.
BTW…great pics…..

I am like you Pete…LOVE flying! EVERY time! Prefer the window bar none…did I spell that right??? Anyways, I have been flying since I was 2 months old…my dad was a Delta employee for my entire childhood, which provided nice benefits…flew to LA one day to see the Price is Right with Bob Barker and back that same night on the red eye, few to Portland once and straight back to watch Titanic for free, now that he has passed away, I don’t receive the same benefits but it doesn’t stop me! Not to mention I DO enjoy a good road trip now and then! That is another story!

@Susie A, You’re right. That was complicated.
I agree with you though. I can’t stand the middle seat.
