Happy Birthday Boys

jett-wilson-and-brewer-wilson

Today both Jett and Brewer are celebrating birthdays. They turn 8 and 3 respectively.

I can’t tell you how proud I am of the two of them. They blow me away every day with the different things they’re showing me about life and love. My only complaint is they’re growing up way too quickly! Still feels like just yesterday when Brandi’s water broke at Jett’s 5th birthday party (and yes the video is still up)!

This year Jett wanted a basketball goal for his birthday (I wasn’t surprised since we Wilsons are so stinkin’ tall). Since I’ve been out of town last night was the first chance I had to pick it up and get started.

Let me just come out and say it. I hate boxes which say “some assembly required.”  This one had LOTS of assembly required so I thought I would video my adventure for you.

What is the most difficult toy or household item you’ve ever assembled?

The largest home item and by far the most difficult was a 12 by 14 metal shed. I still have nightmares.

Two years ago at Christmas our daughter got a plastic play vanity set. It took my father-in-law and me about 3 hours to put it all together. We ran into some of the same problems of putting things on backward and having to go back and put them on right.

    Good job on the goal!

Happy Birthday blessings to both of your boys and and Brandi is such a good sport to allow this video to be viewed by so many!

She was still looking pretty hot for a momma getting ready to give birth!

*May I also be so bold as to let everyone know that another shares this day as her birthday, and it’s ANNIE K, from Buzz by Annie’s.

IT WOULD MAKE HER DAY IF EVERYONE CAME AND WISHED HER A HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Come on…it’ll only take a minute! If you feel silly because you don’t know her, just tell her Sherri sent you!

Thats what its all about! Good job!!

Just a couple of things: Is it really called a basketball goal? I’ve heard of soccer goal, football goal, hockey goal, but basketball goal??? I’ve only heard basketball net!!!

And maybe you dont like basketball cuz your b-ball skills are like ur cricket ones! OUCH! heheheh Just messing with ya!

    Congrats on the assembly!

Great job putting it together! I’m with Maureen, though, I’ve never heard it called “basketball goal”. Here in this corner of Canada, we call it a basketball net.

Praying your kids will love it as much as our kids love ours. They’re constantly playing with it. Might I suggest a bottle of Advil to go with this surprise? You may be going to bed hearing the thump-thump-thump-whoosh on “repeat”. ;)

    Happy Birthday, boys!

Happy Birthday Jett and Brewer. How do they feel about sharing a birthday?

That video is hilarious (sorry, guess I shouldn’t laugh!) Jett’ll so appreciate itv when he’s all grown up. Brewer’s gift didn’t need another 5 hours did it?! :-)

Forget the assembly… what about opening the crazing packaging?! You could sever an artery on some of that stuff.

Now that is a dedicated daddy. Happy Birthday to Jett and Brewer! (My boys both turn 7 and 9 next week.)

You totally rocked the goal assembly. Before you mentioned it, I heard the bird and (sorry) totally thought it took you ALL night long :)

If it is at all windy there on occasion, you may want to either put some bricks or sandbags across the base too… we had a goal go down across the car, its not pretty!

This is when you can be glad you have boys. Go buy a barbie and try to get it out of the package! No assembly required but painful in its own way. And girls can have hundreds of barbies. And barbie shoes. Trying to keep up with barbie shoes is like keeping up with crickets. I think I may have gone off topic a little. My girls are 18 and 20 but the memory of barbie lingers.

Happy Birthday to your boys…such cuteness. Enjoy these days…it certainly does go way too fast.

Happy Birthday to your sweet boys! I always thought parents should get some kind of “sorry your kids are growing up” card at each child’s birthday (they have cards for everything else).
    My worst assembly project…
A birthday gift purchased soon enough but assembly put off waiting for hubby to have time enough to help- a trampoline that *I ALONE at 34 weeks pregnant assembled* (I dont recommend solo trampoline assembly! though doing it alone probably saved the marriage) It was for daughter number 1′s 6th birthday- daughter number 2 born the next day.
I think, Pete, that that 2 am bird was cheering for you! I wonder how much longer it would have taken you if it wasn’t for that sweet bird cheering you on?
thanks again for bringing us all with you to India- we are one of the fortunate families who now have another child to sponsor-Bindiya a 5 year old from India : )

Ahem … I didn’t know what a basketball “goal” was until I watched the video. You seriously call it that down there?? Football uses a goal – basketball uses a HOOP. ha

Good job putting it together, whatever you call it!

I once put a very large, cumbersome, corner computer desk together – by myself. We still use it … because I refuse to take it down and put a new one up!

    Happy Birthday to your boys!

OK, the reason Jett likes basketball is he thinks the balls are named after him… wait for it, wait for it… now you got it didn’t you.

Oh yeah, I’m with Trevor on the Bow Flex. It took over 12 hours of assembly and by the time I completed it I was too sore to work out. (I am being serious) I told my wife I felt like I deserved some type of certificate of completion after it was done.

What a Dad. At some point, I probably would have stuffed the stuff back in the box and put a bow on it.

It’s been a while but I remember putting an IKEA bookshelf together with one of those wacky screwdrivers they give you. It never was quite right, maybe cause there was one piece that I gave up on and tossed out.

I built a wood play set for the girls after we moved into our first home. I had to cut all the lumber, drill every hole, screw in every bolt…. by myself.

The Polly Pocket Cruise Ship….I know it is not supposed to be in our hearts to hate but I literally HATE this toy. And ever single time my daughter gets it out, it falls apart and I have to re-assemble every little stinking part.

I bought a desk when i moved back to MD from AZ. It was an L-Shaped desk, i’d always wanted one to hold all my computer stuff. I lived on the 4th floor of an apt complex. It was me and my GF at the time. The desk weighed a ton. Took me 2 hours to carry it up 4 flights of stairs…..piece ….. by …….. piece….. i still have that desk…..anyone wanna buy it :-)

I brought home a swing set/jungle gym. After several days of assembly and waiting for concrete to set, I was asked to NEVER bring home anything with those words on the box. There was alot of happy times spent on the swing set. You guys will have some great time at that basketball goal. We had one, and it was the perfect place where lots of Father/son talks took place, and the boys shared what was going on with them in a very comfortable space. Take advantage of every chance because you are so right, they do grow up way to fast. Speaking from one that knows, Josh is 29 and Landon is 21. Keep up the great parenting.

that is one of the funnest things i’ve seen in a while. glad you got it all together though. “i don’t even LIKE basketball.” hahahaha.

this might surprise you (doubt it) but i am a pretty independent, go women’s-lib type of girl, right? so i don’t need no man to help me with anything, right?

i was trying to put together an exercise/elliptical machine in my bedroom and since i live with my parents still my dad said he’d so it when he got back in town.

(insert “i don’t need no man to help me” here)

so i did it myself. and while i was successful, it was the HEAVIEST thing i’ve ever had to pick up. and i had to pick it up like 8 times to get parts underneath and the tire on, etc. and then the peddles were on backwards to i had to take them off and back on. and it fell on me a couple of times.

needless to say i didn’t have to use it that night because i had plenty of a workout just pretty the darn thing together.

I’m with Mel and Megan – you are a great dad! It was a over-the-commode vanity with shelving, with the final piece a metal stabilizing rod at the bottom, which meant literally hugging the bowl while trying to screw in the two bolts. Finished, I began to place items on the shelves, only to discover they had been installed upside down. You know what? I left them as is, too furious to hug the bowl again.

  40. Fran May 5, 2009 at 9:20 am #

You were so optimistic at the beginning and we all knew better! So funny and so sweet all at the same time. Its just what dads do.

I personally have NEVER put anything together and couldn’t because I have no patience for many parts and pages of instruction! But, Chip has put together a playset and one of those jeep things. He did put together a ping pong table this past Christmas and that only took an hour or two….piece of cake!

Your boys are adorable. Hope y’all have a big day together!

@Lori in Texas, To be honest we were both so excite to run out and shoot some hoops I forgot to grab the camera.

My two youngest also have the same birthday… but their’s is only ONE YEAR apart. For 3 hours and 25 minutes they are the same age.

Wow…that’s a long time to put one of those together. Glad that he was so excited!!

Oh rats, Pete! But, I know that feeling. I do it a lot, and I’m a scrapbooker, so that’s bad!! :) Hope they had a great b’day, Dad, take care.

@Callie, Ouch! I just did that math.

@Lori in Texas, it was worth every second of it. We’ve had a blast playing together.

My brother’s first job, many years ago, was puttnig together toys for parents who paid him to do it. He inherited that gene from Mother’s side of the family, the mechanical aptitude gene. I can barely put together a sandwich. I give all construction projects to my 17 year old daughter, and lock her in her room. She hasn’t failed me yet..

You will totally not believe this. When my oldest daughter was 4 (now 21), my dryer broke. The service call was going to cost more than I could afford. I lived in an area where hangning clothes out to dry was NOT an option-unless you like the smell of dead fish. I, as a single mom, took my dryer apart, figured out what was wrong with it, bought the inexpensive part, and fixed it myself. I still can’t believe I did that.
Now I have a genius electrician husband that takes care of stuff like that for me. Thank the Lord.

PS Happy Birthday to your boys. They do grow
    quickly.

@Kels, now that is impressive. I’m not touching the dryer!

Haha! great video! I once replaced all the pipes under my kitchen sink because I know plumbers are so darn expensive. I went to lowes and got all the parts and a hack saw and away I went! As I was finishing up, I heard my husband pull up in the driveway. As he came through the garage, I quickly adjusted my yoga pants to reveal my “plumbers crack”, squatted down in front of the sink and waited for his reaction! He happened to be on the phone with another one of the ministers at our church, but the expression on his face was priceless!

Pete and Brandi…enjoy every minute of those boys! They grow up so fast!

What a good dad you are! Maybe it was a bat that was squeaking and not a bird? Just a thought…that was AWFULLY early for a birdie! Anyhow…I actually assembled my queen size bed by myself…I have to say, I think that is the biggest thing I assembled in my life, and I am pretty proud of it!

Good job! Hope it was a hit!

That was funny!!! I’m sure all 3 boys will enjoy that gift for many years…probably even the grandkids! We love our b-ball GOAL! It was very useful when the oldest was on the high school team!

Our fave memory of ‘assembly required’ is putting up a swingset for DD1′s 4th b-day. We lived in El Paso and the it was June…the high that day had been about 112 degrees! We started the set about 8:30pm, went in to watch the 10 news and take a break, learned the temp had fallen to 105 degrees! By 1 o’clock that morning, I was putting on a jacket…the dessert can get dang cold in the summer! We finally crawled in bed at 3 am freezing cold!….best gift ever, though!

Way to go Pete! (And my family has always called it a basetball goal…but I don’t like basketball either, so don’t know that I’m much help!) :)
