In My Head at 33,000 Feet
My thoughts at 33,000 feet..
- Finished reading The Hole In Our Gospel by Richard Stearns. Great book which totally rocked me. I’ll share more about the book later.
- We’re flying over Iceland right now. Wish I had my socks on.
- The Office is funny no matter how many times you watch a particular episode.
- Listening to classical music does not help you relax during turbulence like the old lady told me earlier this week.
- I just watched The Curios Case of Benjamin Buttons. I cried. I think it had more to do with being overly exhausted than the love story.
- Airplane food is nasty and should only be eaten when you are close to starving to death and even then I would not recommend the omelet.
- We just flew over Moscow. That’s kind of cool. Makes me feel like James Bond or something.
- I’ve only gotten up to pee twice on this 15 hour flight. For those of you who know me well I know you’re very proud right now.
- I’m confused. We left Chicago around 7:30 p.m. Friday night and we’re arriving in Deli, India at 9:30 p.m on Saturday. It’s only a 15 hour flight so what the heck happens to the other 11 hours. I guess they hang in space until I retrieve them when I fly back.
- I haven’t slept since Thursday night so I should sleep well in Delhi tonight. We wake up early and board a 2-hour flight to Kolkata which, until recently, used to be called Calcutta.
- Thanks again for all of your prayers!!! Don’t forget the banners below which will help us spread the word.
Here’s a short clip of the scary cab ride…

That book The Hole in Our Gospel totally shaken my ground so far, and I haven’t even read half of it.
And your little cab ride video.. boy I can’t believe you are there, you and the other bloggers, I mean, I’ve read about this on different blogs lately, and now you are actually there. If I’m shocked, wonder how you guys feel.
Prayers your way.
I have heard India’s taxies are crazy. I have a friend who spent 6 weeks in India last summer as a summer missionary and the craziest story she had was when her and her teammates (there were 3 of them) had to get on the back of one of those motorcycles to get a ride to their location. She said it was one of the most terrifying things she has ever done because people drive crazy there are she said that they don’t really a specific way of driving over there like we do in America. Of course she was in a smaller town too…
How they managed to get three people on a motorcycle is something beyond me but they lived to tell about it.
I hope you guys are having a blessed time and I can’t wait to hear more reports about the amazing things God is doing and is going to do!
i am fired up for you…glad you are there and safe bro. i’ll be praying that God gives your group favor.
peace out yo.

Oh, boy! Reading your post makes me wonder how our kids, ages 13, 11, and 8 are going to do on our 23 hour plane trip to Africa in June. We will definately have to read that book, sounds great! Praying for God to renew your bodies and spirits in the midst of your jet lag!
Yeah…Angie made it! With her fear of flying and all I was really worried there would be crazy stories from the gate or runway. Good to hear all of your voices.
Be safe and I cannot wait to hear all of the stories.

Oh Pete…forgot on the Moscow James Bond thing…totally can imagine jumping from the plane with a snow board attached to the feet, parachuting down and landing on a mountain slope with gunmen chasing….don’t get any crazy ideas or anything…just that Bond is way too cool.

Airplanes have food? I’ve never taken an international flight, but I’ve heard the omelets taste vaguely like the SkyMall catalog.
Please be safe. Will continue to pray for you and your journey.

Great thoughts! I loved the video and it also reminds me of how much people in other countries like to honk their horns. I think there is a special honking language that Americans don’t understand.
I’m praying for each of you and those you’ll encounter, that you’ll live out the love of Christ to each of them.

I love Benjamin Button not because of the love story but because of the way “his” life was portrayed and lived out. Especially then end. If you’ve ever had a baby, and loved someone your whole life, and two were ever to meet, it would be such an honor and a tremendous heart ached to take care of them the way she had to. Hope God moves mightily in India.
Lots of people praying for you all and wishing you a powerful week.

Pete,
I am under the impression that Christianity is not necessarily looked upon with favor by the government and people of India. Can you please explain how Compassion is able to operate with impunity there? Thanks.
@Rachel C. it really varies from area to area or state to state. A couple states here in India even have laws against conversion.
However, most seem to be fairly neutral. The areas of Kolkata where we are is only 1% Christian so I don’t think there is even a strong enough presence to cause much trouble.
Pete,
Thanks for clearing that up for me. I have been wondering about this since I recently starting sponsoring 2 boys in India through Compassion. I received my first letters from the boys just a few days ago. I am truely blessed by them (even though the blessing is supposed to be going their way, God is so good!) It is very encouraging and reinforcing to me to be able to read about your group’s first-hand interaction with Compassion. I just wanted to say THANK YOU all sharing this experience with us.
