Blast From The Past

Yesterday my son Gage turned 5! I still can’t believe it. It literally seems like just yesterday we were headed to the hospital to give birth to our middle son who is anything but average.

Last night after we celebrated his birthday with pizza and milkshakes we got the video of Gage’s birth out. We were all in tears watching it so I thought I would share it with you.

Thanks Matt for catching this day on video 5 years ago. While I know it was for a message illustration it’s turned out to be a family favorite for us!

I also thought I would ask you. If there is one family moment you wish you had on video so your family could watch it over and over what would it be?

  1. Happy B-day big man. My daughter turned 3 on Easter and my son was born on Good Friday.
I wish we had our wedding on video so our kids could watch it and see how skinny daddy used to be.

  3. Our first daughter was born 4 months early weighing 1 pound 8 ounces and was delivered by emergency c-section.

I was allowed to sit by my wife’s head as the two teams of doctors worked feverishly to save my daughter’s life. It was a gruesome and amazing experience. I watched them cut my wife open and move different parts of her anatomy out of the way in order to get to her uterus. The most vivid memory I have of that experience is when the doctor reached into my wife and lifted my daughter out of the womb. The first thing that came out was her little hand with all five fingers outstretched as if she was reaching to grasp heaven.

She couldn’t breathe on her own so they had to whisk her away for specialized care. Part of that preparation was stabilizing her enough to be transported to a Childrens hospital to have her first operation. Before they took her, they gave my wife and I our first moment to say ‘hi’ to our firstborn. I can remember how my wife, who was so groggy from the surgery that she could barely keep her eyes open, reached into the incubator and so gently stroked Lauren’s skin with her delicate fingers. I looked down at my own hands and noticed the calluses and cuts from working in the construction field and wondered how I could touch my daughter without breaking her. She was so tiny and fragile. Eventually, I reached my hand into the incubator and placed the tip of my pinky into the palm of her hand, that hand that had reached to grasp heaven, and her five fingers wrapped around just the tip of my finger and squeezed so tight that the little tendons in her arm stood out. I fell in love with her in that moment. She was and is a fighter.

I wish I had either of those moments on video.

  5. Beautiful video – I cried, too! We have an entire closet full of videos from our kids growing up – never missed a moment. But as far as the births…sadly, nothing. My husband sat in a closet praying during the first one (it was a different era), passed out for the second one, and the third…he barely got his clothes changed before he got there! I hope you keep a copy of all of these precious videos in your lock box. You don’t ever want to lose them!

Some days we still capture those moments.

He kept asking me if I was ok and if he could do something for me. Bless his heart! I told him I was ok, and that it was just something my pastor had done that made me cry. Thinking back on that comment now and I’m not so sure that was the right thing to say! He’s probably thinking “Some great pastor that is…making a girl cry like that!” I’ll have to explain better next time I see him!

i have never been in the room when a baby was born, but when my godson Tyler was born 5 years ago (on the 20th) I was in with my friend Susie the whole time, left the room as she was about to push, and came back in 10 minutes later to hold the little man. It was the coolest thing ever! He had the hiccups in utero that you could feel on her stomach, and 10 minutes later I was holding him – and he still had the hiccups! Just blew my mind. :)

I wish I had video footage of my husband and myself from when we were in college band together. The kids hear about it all the time, how Dad played the sax and mom was on the drill team. How Dad was in a special guys group that would sometimes run up in front of the crowd and do a funny dance routine, a la “king Tut” from the old Saturday Night Live days. I’m convinced they would see us as a whole lot more fun and be able to relate to us better if they could see us from back in our youth, before we got married.

With the recent happening in our family, I know we all wish we had videos of my Dad. Not one incident or event in particular, just videos. 72. I was transported back in time to the days that I held my own newborns. What an awesome experience!
If God saves our tears in a bottle and the story of our lives is written in His books, do you suppose maybe He has some video archives for us as well?
And I LOVE that Gage was born on my favorite day of the year. :) Thanks for sharing!

  73. Once when our boys were very young (6 & 9), we were all snuggled up in our bed on a rainy Saturday morning. We gave each other Indian names. My hair was long & curly then so they called me “lotsa hair”. Ryan said Daddy had to be called “tender foot” because his feet are sensitive and he never goes outside in his bare feet.

We called Ryan “strong warrior” because he’s so passionate and fights for what he wants.
Drew was “tender heart” because he’s the peacemaker in the family.

I wish a camera had beenr rolling.

  74. That was wonderful, I noticed two things, I your dog from the past, and what a babyface you had…okay I’ll stop that.
That was so nicely done too.

More pictures of my mom, dad, kids together.

  75. Started crying the second the music started playing…oh my gosh that was just nothing short of sacred…I know it sounds stupid but I believe somehow we’ll be able to relive these profound moments of our lives when we get to heaven…
And I’d love to have my mom on tape interacting with each of my children. She was such an amazing “Nanny” I want them to remember…

  76. @Robin, you know I’ve never really thought about that before but why not? I love that idea of reliving moments that brought us so much joy.

  77. That was beautiful, thanks for sharing. What a gift to have such a well-done video of that special day. I wish I could go back and re-live the 3 days that my children were born. Someone commented above that they hope that’s an option in heaven … to not only read your stories but see video clips of the special moments in your life. I’m gonna hold out for that : )
