I’ve got a weird confession. I like the smell of skunk.
I don’t know what it is about it, but whenever I smell a skunk that’s been hit by a car I usually roll down the window just a little and breathe deep. I know it’s weird but I just thought you needed to know. You can now carry on.
How about you? What’s your favorite weird smell?
markers?
new books?
gasoline?
puppy breath?
fresh cut grass?
Come on we want to know. Stop lurking and jump in.

Jet fuel
Me too! My family always thinks I am weird, but there is just something about it.

@John, that’s just not right!
I can’t open a fresh bag of flour without sticking my nose in the bag and taking a wiff.
Strange as that is, it pales in comparison to liking the skunk smell. I’m worried about you, Pete. lol
I hit one with a fairly new car several years ago. I thought we were going to have to sell it to get rid of the smell. We tried everything. I should have sold it to you. Finally, I jacked up all four wheels, got underneath it with a garden sprayer filled with vinegar and soaked the undercarriage. You could still catch a wiff of it on a hot day, but it was liveable.

I like the smell of skunk too! And I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Puppy Breath. Still trying to figure out what makes Puppy Breath smell the way it does though…

Pete- I don’t think you’re in any position to tell another that “that’s not right” when you just admitted to enjoying the skunk smell!

I like the skunk too. I grew up in Ohio and there were always skunks getting hit on the Highway. Maybe I don’t actually like the smell but it could be a trigger to think of where I grew up?

I think it has potential in certain cultures, not mine of course.
Since many of us have listed gasoline, it really isn’t that weird. I admit to liking the smell of gasoline as well.
Some other great, random smells:
*Letters. Let me explain. Whenever I get a letter in the mail (from an individual, not a business or anything like that), I smell the letter because the letter carries the smell of the person who wrote it to me. It is like I’m face to face with that person.
*Freezers. I love the crispness and coldness of freezers. And yes, you can smell these things.
I know there are more things, but I can’t think of them!

I like that new skunk smell too. I actually think that some coffees brewing smell like skunk. I also like bleach, a freshly lit match and freshly lit cigarette(someone else’s). After the initial puff however, it deteriorates into grossness.
When my friend was pregnant, she liked the smell of rubber so she would walk down the tire aisle of a warehouse store for the fun of it! I’m totally stealing this post BTW.

horse manure (I owned horses most of my life and that smell makes me happy)
nail polish (not the smell of a whole room of it, like a nail salon, just the smell of one open bottle of it.
I’d rather smell as skunk playing with a can of tennis balls while smoking a cigar than most after shaves or perfumes.
Pete, you do know what the smell of skunks is similar to, right? Lol…I like the smell of my dog’s breath. Its rotten, but its her’s and I love it: )
I wouldn’t know what my favorite smell is because I was born without a sense of smell.
Since I’ve never smelled anything I don’t know what I’m missing.
The next question I’m asked is can I taste food. Yes I can but it’s different from you. I go for creamy foods and zesty foods because I can’t taste the little things like garlic and seasonings.

I have a friend who has taught her kids to love the smell of skunks by saying “Doesn’t that smell great?” every time they smell one.

I almost wet myself once when we were driving and scented that special skunk smell, and she said, “smells like a shit kitty got hit by a car.” My mom never uses foul language, and I was pretty shocked!

I’d never want to get sprayed, but I LOVE the smell of skunk. I’ll even roll down the car window to try to get a stronger dose. I agree that it smells like some coffees, and also like a certain powerful herb that I also love.

Pete, you could post a blog saying that you just sneezed twice in a row and it would get 50 comments. Someone would undoubtedly say that it made their day, and someone else would have claimed that it was the funniest thing they have ever heard. At least two people would re-dedicate their life to Christ, hundreds would Twitter the URL, and seven or eight people would go and buy Anne Jackson’s book.

Skunks? Wow. You’re a strange one, Pete Wilson.
Mine aren’t that much better though. I like:
- boiling tar
- plant nurseries (I think it’s mainly the fertilizer I like)
- fresh cut grass
- women (if you’ve ever been to a Promise Keepers thing where it’s lik 99% men, most of whom didn’t shower the whole weekend, you’ll understand)
- freshly printed, full color publications (mmmm ….)
- fresh baked bread
- a freshly painted room
and I’m sure there are plenty of other strange things I like to smell. =)

I do love the smell of puppy breath. It’s like hot dogs. Sometimes I like to go to a puppy store just to smell their breath.
Anther wonderful smell- scotch tape. The real Scotch tape, not the off brands. It smells like Christmas to me.
I also like the smell of the inside of an ice machine. Like the institutionalized sized ones in the back room of grocery stores. I’ve worked at way too many grocery stores.

SKUNK?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Well, one of my favorite weird smells is old books. I collect old novels and the first thing I’ll do with one is open it up and sniff the pages. I love it when they smell like that ‘old library smell’ which takes me back to when my Dad would take me to the library each Saturday morning.

I have to say, I’m with you on the skunk thing. There’s something about it, that makes me take big deep breaths. I remember a time when a skunk got into our chicken house when I was a kid and my dad tried to get it out and he got sprayed and we could smell him coming from a very long way away and I LOVED it! Although, after a while it did become too much, but initially, I thought it smelled good. It’s certainly a childhood memory I’ve never forgotten and we laughed a lot. Maybe that’s why I actually like the smell, it certainly evokes happy memories of childhood.

Funny. My last blog post was on the wonderful smell of blossoms on our satsuma tree. Something about spring makes us want to smell things, maybe.
I love the smell of the mimeograph papers from school, too. And, before I went digital, I loved the smell of a freshly opened can of film.
I think Volkswagens have a distinctive smell. On the inside, not the outside.
Not sure about the newer ones, but I knew a couple of people (years ago) that had VWs, and I used to love riding in their cars because it had a specific smell that other cars didn’t have. Not sure if it was the upholstery or what. One friend had a yellow VW bug with serious electrical issues – when she took a hard left, the windshield wipers would come on, and the horn would beep off and on a few times real quick. People would look to see what she was honking at, and she would just wave as if she knew them. But I digress.
Also, the inside of my grandmother’s china cabinet.

I pick up an object and I smell it, clothes at the store, books, paper, anything. Maybe it’s to see if I like the smell. Who knows. Most of mine have been listed, so maybe they aren’t so odd! Skunks, yes, and I agree that smell reminds me of coffee held in a thermos, I remember both from childhood when we would travel. I was online looking for a skunk scented candle and came across this page. I can’t believe there are others out there that like the smell of skunks as well! (I get grief about it all the time!) Even more so, we’ve been looking for a non-denominational church here in Nashville, so ironically, think we will check out this Cross Point Church. If my love for skunks finally finds me a church family in Nashville, it could only be the work of God!

Ever since toddler-age I ADORE the smell of skunk: It has an aura/aroma that is wondrously binding and hypnotic, like the old gypsy-areas I always loved…I also love the smell of gas, of MANY kinds (including my husband’s farts—seriously!)AND I adored, many years ago, that old exhaust/smog of my home-town L.A. and quite sincerely miss it. I’m glad to identify with ones who share this unique type of appreciation of God’s beautiful blessings!!!
