28 Day Challenge
Yesterday, in week 3 of Backseat Jesus we talked about priorities. We camped out in Matthew 6:33 where Jesus said “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
When it comes to seeking first the Kingdom of God one area of my life I’ve been failing is simply time with God.
We live in a day of unprecedented opportunities to stimulate our minds. We have blogs, television, and 24-hour news. We have ipods, dvd players, and radios in our cars. Everywhere we go there is some kind of message trying to bombard our minds. And honestly, I’ve allowed all the noise to keep me from seeking God as I should.
Francis Chan said,
We think He’s a great Savior, but not a great role model. The American church has abandoned the most simple and obvious truth of what it means to follow Jesus: You actually follow His pattern of life.
One of the the obvious patterns of Jesus’s life was time with God. Over and over again in the Gospels we see where Jesus would “withdraw” to be alone with his Father. And this pattern while repeated over and over by Jesus has been missing in my life as of late.
I bet I’m not alone. So here comes the 28 day challenge. I noticed there just happens to be 28 days between now and Easter. There also happens to be 28 chapters in the book of Matthew. What if we committed together to just read one chapter a day?
This is our opportunity to “seek first the Kingdom of God” together. I’ve never tried anything like this here on Without Wax, but I thought it would be a great way to hold each other accountable. I’ll try to periodically blog about certain observations from the texts we’re reading through.
Will it make a difference? You’ll never know unless you try.
You in?
Chapter one starts today!

On another note, I find it interesting how some people I’ve heard tend to use Matt. 6:33 and kind of forget what Jesus was referring to. They use it for almost anything they want (kind of like how they use Phil. 4:13 to justify them doing whatever they want.) As you say, he was referring to modeling his life. Verse 32 talks about them worrying about what to eat, drink or wear, and it’s these things that are given “as well” in verse 33.

Pete – I commit to the 28 day challenge. I have been studying in Matthew in my personal study time anyway, but I am going back to Chapter 1 and starting again – tonight. Thanks for mentioning the accountability factor too. Way too many (I am included) have abandoned the concept of holding ourselves accountable to our Christian brothers and sisters, even in the simplest of things like reading a chapter a day. If we cannot even engage in that level of accountability, we are sunk where it really becomes critical, like confronting sin in each others lives. We want to pick and choose what parts of scripture we actually put into practice. I look forward to checking here for the next 28 days. Thanks!

And I encourage each of you not to skip or skim over the lineage section of Chapter 1.. there are so many blessings in reading who is in that lineage and what God used in His sovereign will to accomplish His Son coming to this world.
I love the fact that Bathsheba is not mentioned by name, instead she is called out as Uriah’s wife. Like I said, I am super excited for you all… it will be interesting to see which sections Pete comments on.
By the way, Pete, I have been studying the Holy Spirit lately and I was intrigued by the fact that Paul was STOPPED from witnessing by the Holy Spirit during parts of his Missionary journies. Very intrigued.

I’m in…read chapter 1 last night. As with Tony’s comment, verse 6 stuck out to me because of the mention of Bathsheba (NASB does mention her by name). How totally awe inspiring is it that God used what was meant for evil to further the lineage of Jesus Christ? What that means is God will use our brokenness to bring His healing to a world that doesn’t deserve it.

Chapter 1 in a nutshell. There was a whole lot of “begatting” going on, then we end with a virgin birth!? An interesting point is the fact that, had Jesus not been born of a virgin, He would NOT be qualified to reign on the throne of David in the Millenium. Jeconiah (shortened to Coniah), in verse 11 and his descendants were cursed from occupying the throne. Had Jesus been the natural son of Joseph rather than being of the Holy Spirit, this curse would have disqualified Him. In Luke, Jesus’ physical descent is traced back only through Mary’s lineage, bypassing Jeconiah’s line. Though the tracing of lineages may sometimes seem boring, it is always critical to the central point. Sometimes we just have to dig for it.

I am totally there!!!! Thanks to Kat Davis and putting this on her “Daily Verse” emails to me. I live in Oregon and used to work with Kat and love her! Yes I am needing some structure in my quiet times, so this will help. Thank you for sharing this with me!!

Matthew 6:33 says to seek ‘God’s Righteousness’ not our own. A great cross reference for this passage is Philippians 3:1-9. It better explains what it means to seek God’s Righteousness.
