My New Reality Show

One of the greatest joys of my job these days is working with our two campus pastors. Both Chad Roberts, our Dickson campus pastor, and Blake Bergstrom, our Nashville campus pastor, are a blast to work with. I’m very proud of both of them and the way they pastor and lead here at Cross Point.

The other night Blake came over to help me fix a leak we have in my chimney. This was going to require both of us getting on my very high and steep roof. He was a great sport… but this a bad news/good news story.

Bad news: It rained the next day and my chimney still leaks.
Good news: We got a great video out of it.

You’ve heard of Ice Road Truckers, Deadliest Catch, and American Loggers but now I present to you the new reality show entitled “roofing pastors”. Enjoy.

Oh by the way, what’s your favorite reality TV show?

Um sweetie, I have to tell you I was an Emergency Room nurse for several years and we got some seriously injured MALES who did exactly what you 2 dudes did. You guys need a serious talking to. Read my lips “life changing injuries” “career ending injuries” “Closed head injury”. Seriously. I was laughing a little but mostly I had my hand over my mouth like I cannot believe these turkeys. C’mon man. Never again…do you hear me!? I will give both of you guys a time-out! :)

  7. Gina March 5, 2009 at 7:27 am #

oh, and “the making love to the corner” was probably the part when I was laughing….that and when Blake was saying repeatedly how scared he was.
No reality shows for me…..I have had enough reality in my life.
    Glad you guys are ok.

I love that the neighbor was somewhat concerned but then turned to head back home!

It was a great video for those of us on the ground – but please tell me you would have chucked the camera if a slip had occurred!

Hilarious! I hate that Brandi (along with the rest of the world) had to see your “affair” with the roof firsthand-with commentary!)

My hubby had a similar experience (not an affair with a roof, just a REPAIR on the roof)but add a BUMBLE BEE TO THE MIX! His friend JUMPED OFF THE ROOF!

We didn’t have a camera though.

My hands are dripping sweat just from watching that video! What makes me laugh the most is the fact that the camera made it further up the roof than Pete did!

Pete, you are so much better at your day job, along with Blake

Couldn’t you get Will to come over and hold the ladder? What kind of neighbor IS he? This was hilarious and I loved it! One of the dumbest things you have done and you have done some dumb things!!!! Glad you both survived to tell about it and we weren’t watching your last moments on earth!

  14. Tony York March 5, 2009 at 8:20 am #

I can’t see the video on this network, but when I get home I plan on viewing it. However, having seen how roofing occurs in the south, I am hoping that black tar was not the answer for step-flashing and counter-flashing. Also, you need to make sure you have a hood for your chimney as rain can run down the interior wall of a chimney and come in through a crack in the grout.

I am not a roofer, but I did sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

oh my goodness. thank you for the morning laugh. and i only laugh because I would be the one paralyzed on the corner of the roof. i bet the video of you two finally getting down was just has scary/funny. this video alone should provide tons of sermon material. thanks for sharing.

  16. Angela March 5, 2009 at 8:28 am #

Okay I think I just pee’d my pants from laughing so hard. When you had to go to subtitles on Blake and the neighbor shows up… I was hoping you would tell him you guys were trying to get closer to God. LOL! and yes the I am making love to this corner remark made Biggie bark. I don’t care who you are that was funny! :-) Now my question is are you both still on the roof? And why are you hazing the new pastor?

  17. allyberg March 5, 2009 at 8:31 am #

Oh my word! That was hilarious! Although, I am glad I stayed inside and didn’t watch it first hand! I had no idea the roof was that steep! You and the roof corner…blake holding your leg as he went down the ladder! The whole thing hilarious! As I was saying when you two were heading out the door to get on the roof! Dumb and Dumber! Great video, Pete! Thanks for the laugh this morning! Now the question is can I trust you with my husband on this weekend trip! I am feeling a little nervous about it! :)

  18. Harold March 5, 2009 at 8:31 am #

Pete, I guess you have heard the old redneck joke… “What the last thing you hear a redneck say before he dies?” “Hey ya’ll watch this” This falls into that category. I guess for a pastor at Crosspoint it would be. “Hey ya’ll I’m making love to the corner of my roof”

    I laughed till I cried!

  19. Katy March 5, 2009 at 8:36 am #

That was sheer insanity! Did Blake ever come back with the shoes? How did you get down? Did they get video of YOU coming down?

Pete, dude, you will be living with this video for many many years. That was the funniest thing I have seen in some time. Of course, its funny because we have all been there, racked with fear, and no way out, and making love to something we shouldn’t. too funny.

i had to call my daughter there at CP and tell her to be sure and see this video today, because she now has a comment to hold over her pastor forever.

funniest thing ever. seriously, so glad you got down. now, don’t EVER do that again young man.

  35. Lorrie Harden March 5, 2009 at 10:48 am #

Are we not paying you enough?? Do we need to send a note to the elders requesting a salary increase, so you can PAY a professional to fix the leak??!! Absolutely, frightening and hysterical all at the same time!! Is this how you initiate the new pastor??
Will Blake stay on as Nashville Campus pastor? Will Pete continue the affair with his roof? Will they make money if they send this to America’s funniest home videos?? LOL Thanks for sharing, I think?? I won’t be showing this to my boys…LOL

On behalf of the Board of Elders and others in leadership at your church, I would just like to say, “WHAT IN THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?!?” I’m guessing that there are at least 50 people at Crosspoint who would actually know what they’re doing up on that roof.

    3. I know that paralyzed feeling, but I never thought of it as making love to the roof.
    4. I started turning down houses in your neigborhood because they were too high and steep.
    5. Should I go on!

Where was Brandi? That’s easy- she was inside having a prayer meeting and making sure that both the health insurance and the life insurance were paid up!
What is it about guys and roofs? Several of the guys at our church recently replaced the steeple. None of them were roofers and my Beloved was the “kid” clocking at 62 yrs young. Yep, the insurance is paid.

  69. Nate VZ March 5, 2009 at 6:33 pm #

    Wow!

As an orthopedic surgeon I have always imagined the scene immediately prior to the accident that lands a patient in the ER/trauma bay. Now, you have provided that footage. Have my stories taught you nothing?!?

Closed head injury=drooling, no independent thoughts, no bowel control, inability to ambulate or speak

Cervical spine injury=inability to walk, achieve an erection, use your arms or take an independent breath

Chest injury=pneumothorax, rib fractures, pneumonia, horrible lung infection (empyema)

Long bone fractures=minimum 2-6 months of healing/independent ambulation. risk of leg clot, pulmonary embolism, death

Calcaneus (heel bone) fractures=never a pain-free step again in your life.

So….how about you get out the $60 and get a trained professional to do this?

I cannot tell you how many “weekend warriors” I have treated over the past six years whose lives have been physically altered forever.

In the event of a fall, and cervical spine injury, that roof would have been the last thing you ever “made love” to.

Just thought I’d give my two cents. We may some day find a cure to cancer, but this video demonstrates while there will ALWAYS be a societal need for an orthopedic surgeon…thus confirming my career decision…

Dude…. if that is written in small print somewhere in the job description of a campus pastor, then you can hang it up…..no need to keep praying…..but seriously, you are crazy! I have a few roofers that I personally know that can come out next time for you.

  86. Ron Roark March 6, 2009 at 12:41 pm #

    SERIOUSLY… WHY????
    1. Why did you take a camera that could further endanger you?
    2. Why are BOTH my pastors doing something that could put them BOTH out of Commission? I need at least ONE healthy pastor!!!!
    3. Where was Jenni Catron??? ;)

Your roof is steep! Oh my goodness that is crazy. I’ve helped do some roofing but never on a roof at that angle.

I would have peed my pants trying to get back on the ladder! If I were you I would stick to writing and singing Country songs in your spare time :)

Oh. My. I’m not sure which was my favorite part…

“I moved up five feet higher.”
“But now I’m not sure how I’m gonna get down.”
    “Lord, be with me now.”

    Too funny!!!!!!

My husband and I went to Colorado a few years ago and did some very beginner level rock climbing. That was when I discovered that while I really enjoy climing up, getting DOWN is terrifying!! I cried. It was so embarrassing. I hope you didn’t cry getting off the roof. :)

Oh. my. goodness. I had to stop watching at less than 2:00 because I was having heart palpitations! Can you tell I am not a risk taker? Esp with heights. Glad you are both safe (at least I assume you are based on the previous comments:)

  91. Dory March 7, 2009 at 7:37 am #

Oh my goodness. I couldn’t even watch. Whew…. you guys are NUTS!

  92. Pam Shaffer March 7, 2009 at 10:57 am #

You and your family are my only reality show! You have a bit of your Grandpa Wilson in you. He replaced his garage roof last summer at the prime age of 80!!!
You are both crazy but very lovable!

Ha ha haaaa oh my goodness, this was SO funny because this is something I would totally do. As a matter of fact, I’ve done stupid, risky things like this before and somehow by God’s grace have survived.

Oh goodness …this was awesome. Ahhhh …I’m gonna be chuckling about it all night now. =)
