Isn’t it funny how we give people nicknames. In elementary school is was ‘PJ’, in high school I was ‘Wilson’ and then in college I became ’31 flavors’. These days some people call me “PP” for Pastor Pete ( Trust me, I’ve been called worse).
I love nicknames. If you’re a close friend of mine I’ve probably given you a nickname (whether you realize it or not). I even have nicknames for people at church or the gym that I don’t even know. I’m not sure why I think they’re so fun or why I give them to people, but I do.
Here are the nicknames I have for my family.
Brandi is Willis
Jett is J-man
Gage is Gagey Poo
Brewer is Boo Boo
So do you have a nickname? Let’s hear it. Come on, stop lurking and tell us. We promise we won’t make fun of you.
If you’re not feeling very creative and need a little help you could always visit nicknames.com where they will help you develop a vast array of nicknames for you and your friends.

Nicknames are fun!! My nickname is Bebe, my God-daughter came up with it before she turned one and it stuck (she’s almost 7 now)- Brittany is hard for babies to say, when my brother was a baby he called me it-eee, he is now 17
I definitely prefer Bebe to it-eee!
Brittany’s last blog post..My babies (but not MINE)

@April, I love you guys call your grandpa ‘the funk”. I might steal that one.
Well – my brothers had lots of tormenting nicknames for me during our youth. Now they call me Master! LOL! They owe me. Kidding.
My nicknames: Mom, Jame, James, Jay-Jay, Jamie Doll (my grandmother gave me this one when I was little.)

I’m with you Pete, everyone has a nickname
My youngest Colton, when he was three started calling our oldest, Josh… but his name is Nolan… they don’t even sound alike. So for the longest time we called him Josh and still do at times.
Currently,
Nolan = Owen Nolan (big hockey fans),
Colton= Bubba Jack
Rick, my husband is still called Westie from shortening our last name.
And I grew up with toots from my mom and snickelfritz from my dad… and tori short for Victoria.
Vicky’s last blog post..Secrets of a Diary from 1977.
JE, JB, JD, Jack…not real creative I know.
However, I’ve got to know what “31 flavors” refers to?
Jonathan’s last blog post..Don’t Blame Me!
“we promise we won’t make fun of you.”: Is that some kind of directive? Oh, alright.
katdish is actually not some clever blogger name. It is an abbreviation of my first and last (maiden) name.
Nicknames: Kat, Dish, Katdish, Dishy, Kangaroo (don’t ask, it was junior high)
We call our daughter Boogie, and our son Cam. Cam is short for Cameron, I’m not really sure where Boogie came from…
katdish’s last blog post..Stuff This Christian Likes: Catalyst One Day
Ooooh, I love nicknames too! My nickname is Peepers (big eyes). We called my brother “Spriggy” growing up, but now my girls call him “Uncle Pooty” (for obvious reasons). My mom fell in a septic tank as a child and inherited the name “poo poo.” My dad is “big daddy.” I call my husband E-rock or Earache (depending on my mood). My kids get a new nickname just about everyday and my students at school get offended if I don’t give them one!
Cameron’s last blog post..My Snugglebug
My dad has always called me grits. Don’t know why. My grandfather uses the affectionate term “knuckleheads” for all of his grandchildren. David and I have picked that up for our dogs.
I have a couple more embarassing nicknames for myself, but I’m not going to spill without knowing if I’m one of those people at church you have a nickname for and they don’t know it. You spill, I spill.
I was called twiggy in high school, and dr. smooth in college. don’t really have one now, but I have one for my family.
My wife is “the wendinator”
My daughtyer is “rayna rooster”
My son is “noah boa”
Adam’s last blog post..Top Posts for Feb.
My father-in-law is the best at giving nick names. My husband was Ruid Knocker growing up, now it’s just Ruid. I have no idea where it came from. I think they were characters in stories he made up to tell the kids when they were little. My SIL was Nize. Now that we have a 2 year old, she’s Aunt Nize and her husband is Uncle Mo. FIL is Pa, MIL is GrandPatty. My parents are MiMi and (although PiPi was tempting and is still often used) Poppy. Nick names are fun when grand children come along.
Growing up I was LuLu, and often my mom calls me Lu still, but nothing has really stuck on me other than that. Much to my delight!!
tracie’s last blog post..Oh the Things He Says
Sorry, I forgot the best part about SIL’s name, it was Futon Nizey…Nize for short…he is one creative man!
tracie’s last blog post..Oh the Things He Says
Hubby has been Birddog for as long as he remembers. When we married, his friends started calling me Ladybird and it stuck as my blogging name. Babybird kind of came with the territory…but we call him the E-Man sometimes.
Curious as to why you call Brandi “Willis”? Does it go back to “What’cho talkin’bout Willis?”
Ladybird’s last blog post..WW – Blue Eyes
Ninny Muggins.. it’s true. Comes from the movie Elf…. “You’re not a cotton headed ninny muggins…” (one of the elves talking to Will Ferrell when they are making toys at the beginning of the movie and he is way behind). Love that movie!
Linnae Hoppe’s last blog post..Crazy Love
I’ve had sooo many nicknames, but most of them deriving from my first and longest-lasting one, Mo (short for Maureen). My dad used to call me Mo Jo, and then Mo Jo Reen came from that. Moweezle is another one (and I actually use it for my email and blog). I’ll leave it at those. I also love nicknames, and pretty much call everyone by one too!
Maureen’s last blog post..Nostalgia…
Katydid has followed me for years.
My daughter has gone through Boo Boo, Boo, and is now Mike
Middle Son – Bubbers, Mighty Max, Maxamillian,
Youngest Son – Bubba, Jack, Jack Jack, Rewsky, Bo Bo and so many others.

I grew up as my Daddy’s pumkin then as a teen he began calling me MP…that is my fave!
Our youngest, LeAnn, was dubbed Oleander by a lady at our church in El Paso many years ago…didn’t stick but with me. We also call her Bunny – cute as all get out but NEVER still even at 15!!
I am sworn to secrecy on my oldest nickname…she used it through first grade then put it away and decided to grow up!!! It is still one of my favorite names, though.
bluegoose’s last blog post..Please continue to pray for Sean
@Carey, I promise I don’t have a nickname for you (yet) so please share with us your most embarrassing names so I can greet you that way on Sunday.
I agree with Carey, no spilling until you tell us our nicknames. 3 months smoke free
Ginny Owens gave me the nickname “puffy” (as in Shaun Puffy Groves) and it stuck. But it’s only used by other artists.
My sister called me “Bubba” growing up.
My in-laws call me “Shaundace.” Like Candace with a Shaun on front…I. Don’t. Know. Why.
Penelope (3) is called “Pepply” because it’s what she called herself when she started talking.
Gresham (6) is called “Gresh.” Though I sometimes call him G-Funk because he, like all boys, smells weird.
Grabriella (8) accepts no nicknames.
Shaun Groves’s last blog post..Divine Commodity
My kids are Buggie and Nater.
Wife. Well. She is sweetheart, sweetie and honey.
Mine is usually, “Steeeeeeeeeveeeeeen!” (when yelled by her) and “Daaaaaaaaaaaadddddyyyyyy!” (when yelled by the kids).
If I could fill out boxes correctly, that would be awesome.

I’m “The Galbaby” — youngest child, girl, and born and raised in the south… But only Dad can call me this!
I’m SMURF (S. Murphy) and I happened to be very SHORT!
Hubby is Big Al. (he’s also short, but big in my eyes so I’ve always called him that!)
sherri’s last blog post..WIN MY "BEST IRISH LIMERICK CONTEST"!
My dad has always called me Sunshine because I loved to sing “You Are my Sunshine.” I’ve been called “Effy” short for efferdent because of my huge smile. Carl because my maiden name is Erskine. And the absolute most embarassing one was … foreskin which was due to my maiden name. Stupid football players. So glad I got rid of that name and I am totally glad I live in IN and can’t come to your church now!
My boys are usually Bud, Buster or Buddy. Creative … I know.
Carrie’s last blog post..Our New … Camper!
When your name is Chilly, not too many other nicknames develop! Ha!
However, many of my staff call me: ‘Captain’ or ‘Oh Captain, My Captain’ ~ a dead poet’s thing.
My two sons, Max & Chase are often referred to as: Mac & Cheese
Chilly’s last blog post..Truth Hurts.
Not lately. My grandma used to call me Helene, to differentiate from when she was calling me, or my mom, who is also named Helen. My daddy used to call me princess. Both are gone, and so are my nicknames.
Helen’s last blog post..Colbert and Fr. Martin Discuss the Economy’s Influence of Faith: Is There One?
@Jonathan (and others), 31 flavors was a nickname given to me based on my philosophy of dating at that period in my life.
I didn’t really want to settle down and my motto was “how will you ever know who or what type of girl you want to marry if you don’t date a lot”.
Then I met Brandi and my philosophy was thrown out the window. Not sure what flavor she was but I liked it!
My grandfather called me Jimmy. My mom calls me Nicky..
when i was little it was peanut and Mindy,
now it is just Mel
Mel’s last blog post..Of Tyrants & Thieves
My parents – cruel, cruel people – called me “Herb” for the longest time. Apparently, when I was very little, my mom would talk about me and say “her,” and then my dad would say, “Who’s Herb?” They thought it was funny. Let me just tell you that as a 12-year-old girl, it is never funny to be called Herb.
Mary’s last blog post..Why wouldn’t I give the baby pasta for dinner?
Hmm..
I call every kid I meet, George. Doesn’t matter if they are a girl or boy. I get two responses: “Hee-eyy!” or “I’m not George!”.
My wife’s nickname is Hector Deeann Doltz because she couldn’t say her own name when she was a wee one. I call her Hector all the time. (Her first name is Heather).
My dad nicknamed my kids. Lauren is known as “Foxy Mama” and Brianna is “Breezy Pete”.
Sadly, I can’t think of a nickname that I am called. Or maybe, people have some for me that they don’t want me to know.
Tony York’s last blog post..The New Testament
Several of my friends (and family) call me Chicken. Although my Dad calls me Boo or Bugs. I’m not sure he even really knows my first name…
My youngest daughter goes by Beans – from the Name Game song… Serena beana bo beana, banana fanana fo fanana…

Pete,
Mine is CadillacZak.
Cool nickname actually. A bunch of kids in my youth group gave it to me a long time ago because at the time I drove a 1964 Cadillac Eldorado that was black with flames.

brent is “hodge” or “hodgie”. i actually stole a cat from my neighborhood when i was 3 and named him Hodgie. my mom swears to this day i was having a premonition.

tammy- “tam”
arent we a creative bunch!
tam’s last blog post..what’s your forecast?
My hubby calls me Baby Mama. My women’s life group members have started calling me Panda, which I love! My 3 year old daughter still sometimes calls me Miss Amanda when “mama” doesn’t get my attention – but I think that’s because I was the children’s minister for the first 2 1/2 years of her life and she heard so many other kids call me that.
Amanda Sims’s last blog post..Real People
@Patrick, I think you win the award for the most nicknames for one person.
For years as a kid, my dad called me “Beans”. Then he made the mistake of calling me that in front of friends from school, and when they started calling me Beans I sternly told my Dad to never call me that again. (Poor Dad) In high school I was “Youzzers”. In college I was “Swing Kid” (for all the swing dancing I did). Now my friends just call me Youssi.
My brother’s nickname was “Charlie-Chuck”. This came about because half his friends called him Charlie, and the other half called him Chuck, so the people who didn’t know which name to go with just called him by both.
The only nickname I ever had was by my Grandpa – he always called me his “Holly Dolly”.
I always hated that I had a name that you couldn’t shorten or do anything with other than “Holly”. As a result, both of my daughters, Alexandria and Madeline, have names that have tons of options! Alex is “Ally Cat, Al, AliLindell, or Al Pal” Maddie is “Moose, Mads, or Gracie” (we work the middle names in too!).
holly’s last blog post..The mysterious "foil arrangement"
Let’s see…when I was younger, my family called me “lissa” and “lala”. I’ve also been called “Mel” and the ever-so-original “Mel Gibson”.
However, “gibby” is my favorite since it was given to me by one of my roommates at an internship I did in TX. Several variations have come from it, like “gibbs”, “gib”, “gibster”, “the gibonator” and so on.

Tyler Jewell’s last blog post..School and Steely Dan
Let’s see:
In high school I had two:
Lukoc after Toni Kukoc because of my overall skill on the court (Unfortunately my skill has declined as my age has increased..oh and weight)
Baby Oak for knowing just about every verse to the The Chronic, the Friday soundtrack and Snoop’s first CD.
In college it was Luke.
In the Army it was Oakman or Oakie.
Now I have glossed myself the Giant Idiot and it is probably the truest nickname I have ever had.
Mine is “Chandler”… and no one but strangers call me that. They say I look like Chandler Bing.
DubHow’s last blog post..Just something about…
Well, to be honest, my parents always just called me David. In middle school, people started to call me Dave. In high school it was Deaton, Big D, Dave, and a few girls called me “Dabid” in a baby voice (which was a little weird)
Then the first couple of years of college it was D Square, D-Diddy, and the not so appropriate Double D. That didn’t stick very well cause I didn’t like it and hated it when people would do that.
Then this past summer, I worked on the TN Travel Teams for the TBC and there was another guy on the team whose name was David as well. So then how people would separate us was Big David, Little David (me), Big Whopper, Jr. Whopper (again me), etc. It just grew depending on what the kids wanted to call us.
Most of the time though it’s just David.
David Deaton’s last blog post..I Love Fridays.
I have had several through my life and some that I would like to forget – like fatso and smelly melly. My dad always called me “Melody Q” or “Q-cumber” – kind of funny I married a Quinn! My very first car tag was “MELO DQ” – friends in high school called me “mel” or “mel mel” and some still do. My college boyfriend called me “sparky” or “snowflake”. I call Kendall – “sister” or “mama” or Kendall Bendall, Kelly is Kelly Belly or sometimes “sister” and Kesler is usually “sister” or “Key Key”. I guess I need a nickname for Kevin!
My friends call me Krispy… It was a slip of the tongue and stuck… but they say it fits my personality, whatever that means…
Kristy’s last blog post..Spring Sing…
Geege by my family (sounds like jeege)
Pizza Gina by my dad when I was little.
Laverne by some teachers in grade school because my maiden name is DeFazio.
Sometimes I am simply G.
Shoot, I’ve been a bub since I was 20 years old. I worked with people with cerebral palsy and retardation and one of the girls I worked with would see me and start hollering, “bub, bub, bub!” My friends heard her calling me that and sure enough it stuck to me like glue. I also have been a “krazy joe” which I used when I was selling pens on the telephone for years. Only in the last couple years of my new job have people called me Paul more than one of my other nicknames. It took some getting used to.
i’ve had my fair share of nicknames…comes with the territory of having red, curly hair:
highschool: Red, bigred, red thunder, annie
college: sister sarah, sarah smeezy
post college: el toro, SS
** mom calls me sarah belle
I’m 6’5″, so that will help with the context of a lot of these:
-Squid (long arms that swatted shots when playing basketball in hs and college)
-Biggen
-Shick Noemaker (sh-ick new-make-ur)
-Nicky (-Poo, also)
-Nicolai (I was actually engaged to a gal of that name… took a while to get used to be called that after the relationship ended.)
-Sasquatch
-BDA (Big Dumb Animal)
-Clavin (as in Cliff, from Cheers- cause I know a lot of random stuff)
-The Big Guy
-Love (from my hot wife!)
-Bossman
-That Guy
Thanks for the trip down memory lane, “P-dub”.

My nickname was Weasel
My son’s nickname was MeToo, When we use to ask what everyone wanted to do or eat he was always the last to answer and he always said “metoo”
You had to go there PP didn’t you?!
Well there is the obvious…
Koala – Christened by my lil bro and sis because I’m little and known to be a hugger…
Koala girl – Which is how my pastor refers to me thanks to my blog!
Milkybar Kid – I had blonde hair and glasses at the time
L.A. – short for “laura anne” as the youth pastor at my old church thought I needed a ‘cooler name’ for doing streetwork. this led to La (thanks to predictive text), and then La-la (thanks to the teletubbies)
Laurie-Pie/Piecrust/Poo – Thanks ever so much Mum, I love you too.
Lollipop – Laurie turns to lolly which leads to this one…
Hippy girl – In high school everyone thought I was a hippie.
Monica – because of my OCD tendencies going crazy when people wash the dishes in the wrong order, or starting to rearrange people’s bookshelves…
Brunettekoala’s last blog post..Travelling Tuesday: Happy shoes for travelling feet
Well, there is a long story behind my nickname… “Ronni Sue Duckwater”… but funny thing is only one person ever called me that… then my pastor started calling me Ronni Sue out of nowhere… (he didn’t know the story)… still does. And he is the only one I”ll LET call me that.
Hubby calls me Shweedy.
My dogs are wigglebutt and vulture. You’d have to know them to understand. LOL.
Ronni’s last blog post..
@Nick, I think Sasquatch might be one of my favorite nicknames of all time.
My grandpa always called me “Denny Bill,” short for Dennis William. My 10-yr-old son, Will, wants to take his initial “W” and be known as “Double-luv-ya.” Not sure we’re gonna encourage that one, though…
I’ve never been a fan of nicknames – me or my friends. It’s the name I’ve got and it is so unusual that it took me a long time to make peace with it (it sucked being a kid without the pre-fab keychain, license plate, or pencils with your name on it)…
When my dad got mad, he would slur my name into “Chanel.”
A couple of people tried to call me “Nellie” and I don’t like that and won’t respond to it.
The only one that I allow people to use is PKs (pronounced “peeks”) which is after my old blogger alter-ego, Pink Kitty. Everyone abbreviated it PK or PKs and it stuck.
Dad always called me “Buckshot” and I can’t explain that one.
Didn’t have one amongst friends, with a short name like Faye, not much need.
Hubby calls me Baby, Babe, Sweetie, Honey and Ladybug. (A couple was over at dinner one night when he called me some of these, and the lady thought it was so sweet! When she wanted to know why he called me those little names of endearment — she was looking for sage marriage advice — he said, “because I can’t ever remember her name!”)
Mine – Rube, RayRay, Red, Lefty, Blanche, Ranchwell, RayDog, honey
Jim – Beav, BeavDaddy, Big Rhythm, Numero Uno, Jimmy, Monkey Jim (by nieces & nephews who couldn’t say ‘uncle’), baby; his grandpa name is going to be Old Skool
Bix – Bixie, Bixie Boo or Bixie Bobo, Brother
Josey – Josey Ray, JoRay, Sister, punkin, snuggle bunny
My mom is Tootie and she’s married to Dusty. I have an Uncle Bubba, an Uncle Jr., an Aunt Net (for Annette) and an Aunt Dot. My in-laws go by Big Daddy & JuJu.
I dj on the side so most people call me stevie b..My last name is Ballas. One day I was at the Dr and when the nurse came out to call my name she said Steve Balls. I think the girl sitting next to me laughed. So since then a lot of my guy friends call me DJ Balls.
Heath’s dad has a nickname for everyone too. In fact, it is a joke that he only likes you when he gives you a nickname…and of course there are always stories to go with those names.
Heath is Hammer, I am Fern, Isaiah is Spud, Joel is Slug (like a baseball slugger not an animal) and Silas is Red
When I was a kid Branflakes. Brandywine.BB.When I became an adult My husband calls me Brain. And I broke my ankle badly so I was gimpy or limpy

The only nickname I did not like was during my school days, when other kids called me “The Brain.”
Jan C’s last blog post..Sundays
A lot of the older family members called me Princess. When I was probably Jr. High age, an uncle asked me what my real name was because he’d never heard it. Then my family got a white German Shepherd whose parents were King and Queen. Yes, I lost the title of Princess to a dog:(. (but I know I was always a princess to my daddy – hallelujah)
Dad has always called me Tiger or Tigger, Chicken.. my BFF family calls me Fairy- into a second generation, Chamb-y, Chambermaid, Wilt Chamberlian ( ironic- I’m 5’3″….. Peaches or Peach or Peachy is the one that has lasted almost 30 years, Mare the one I use most now. I love nicknames, my friends all have & use nicknames to sort ourselves/themselves out. I dated 3 guys in a row named JOHN so nicknames were a must ….
@Ben, I thought Ben was your nickname and Snake was your real name.
You forgot: “Freddy” (from Scooby Doo) and “The Great Cornholio”.

When I became a mom, I was dubbed the “Ringleader” of our clan, kept it as my email tag, so lots of people ask “How’s the ringleader today?”
Most recent – when on a medical mission trip to Sudan this past fall, the people of the Dinka tribe could not pronounce my name, so shortened it to Mary … thus my teammates now call me “Dinka Mary” all the way down the halls at church.

I watched all of the paralyzed series and I’m planning to watch the backseat jesus. All I can say about the paralyzed series is WOW! So much of what you said hit me.

Well my folks didn’t exactly put Shark Bait on my birth certificate you know.
Although I wouldn’t have put it past my Father, if he had thought of it.
Actually Shark Bait is not even my real nickname, since no one calls me that. It’s just a name I use to blog, and it is the name of the stuffed fish I have chained to my bible case.

I’ve had a few nicknames: Jon-Jon, Captain – because of Captain John Smith, and my mother-in-law used to call me Just Jon (after Just Jack on Will and Grace… not sure what THAT says about me!).
With a name like Jon Smith, you spend more time answering the “Is that your real name?” question than actually getting called nicknames.

Before that, it was Hooch.

My nickname is “D” because it was for people to remember and I thought, once people got the first letter of my name maybe then they wouldn’t call me Tamara with a T. haha Because Demara is definitely not pronounced or written with a T!

My dad called me Freddy when I was a little girl. I don’t really have a nickname now. Boo.
We call my 3 year old “Boo-Boo”. Our 2 year old, Payton, is nick named “Pay-Pay”. My oldest son is a skinny guy so we call him “Bones”. My daughter’s nick name is DQ… DRAMA QUEEN! We also call her Katie.
