My Dad Can Juggle Better Than Your Dad

Last week Jett was Star of the Week in his classroom which meant on Friday he was able to invite his family to school. This was our opportunity to share with the class a little about our family including what we do for a living.

I have no problem being in front of a video camera. Speaking in front of large crowds doesn’t scare me either. However, speaking to my son’s first grade class scares me to death.

Jett had already given me the run down of what some of the other dads had done. I knew it was stiff competition. Just the week before one of the dad’s who’s a PGA golf instructor had shown them the perfect golf swing. Jett and the rest of the kids were convinced he was better than Tiger Woods.

While I’m very proud of being a pastor I had a feeling a bunch of first graders weren’t going to be so impressed with my pastoring skillz. I thought about telling them I help save people from the eternal flames of hell, but I thought that might freak them out.  Then I thought about lying and telling them I was a professional scuba diver, or a pilot, or animal trainer but Brandi told me that would be wrong. :)

Then I remembered. Wait…. I know how to juggle. It’s been years, but I can tell them I’m a pastor and if that underwhelms them I’ll show them how I can juggle.

So I did and I think they were impressed. Take that Mr. Golf Pro.

What’s your secret talent? Come on, you know you have at least one. Spill it.

  1. a machete, an egg, and a bowling ball? I am so freaking impressed. I thought it was a joke at first but you did it? wow!!! if I were Jett I would be walking a little taller and prouder at school! So cool? Nothing but maybe wild animals could top that!

  2. Dude, To me that appears to be a heck of a lot more difficult than mastering a perfect Golf swing. I love that even though cops and fireman were kind of over looked, in my opinion, prior to 9/11, they get the biggest ooo’s and ahhh’s when they go to schools. Heck, I still want to be a cop. I believe the reason behind this is becuase children still believe they need someone/something to be protected. Maybe, just maybe, this is why Jesus says we must become like little children. So that we can look at God like those kids see Cops and Firemen.

  3. oh, I forgot, the only talent I have is catching peanuts, cashews in my mouth….my kids or husband throw ‘em and I can catch ‘em….I am seriously good…even throw them from across the room-I got ‘em.
But sadly, I think that is my only talent. And it’s kind of fattening to play for extended periods of time.

  36. Wish my pastor could juggle! Catholic priests generally don’t do stuff like that during mass, though, but it would definitely keep my kids awake during the homily if they did.

My secret talent is that I can recite the first sentence of the Prologue to the Canterbury Tales, in Middle English, from memory. The first sentence, by the way, is about 20 lines long. It has won me some bets and impressed a few middle schoolers and high schoolers, but I doubt it would get me anywhere with 2d graders.

My husband is a geologist. When he goes to speak in our kids’ classes, he shows them how to test rocks by tasting them and by dropping acid on them. Then he tells them how he gets to go inside caves and put dye in rivers to test the water. They think he is the equivalent of The Crocodile Hunter.

  70. Very cool! I’m starting to think you should do a circus series and juggle during your sermon. LOL! Loved it!

  72. Pete, You rock!

My secret talent…being far removed from my college days…
I can still kick a 45 yard Field Goal and punt a football about 45-50 yards. I can also throw a football 50 yards with no problem. Not bad for 5’9″ tall and overweight.
Not trying out for the Titans anytime soon though…I tend to pull quite a few muscles these days when I do this. It has won me some nice bets in the past though :)

  73. I loved listening to the kids’ reaction! They will for sure expect that of their own pastor/minister/priest! I will have to forward this on to my pastor here in the North to tell him what is happenin’ down South – he has his work cut out for him!!!
Great clip – thanks for sharing. Had a rough day and this was my “joy” moment of the day!

  74. I can flip a pancake if the heat’s right, the pancake’s ready, and I’ve already dropped two of them for practice.

I think there’s a “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit” message in the egg, machete, and bowling ball – I’m just not sure what it is other than it all came together so beautifully. Great job Pete (but keep your day job) :)

  77. Pete, no offense to the golf pro or to any other profession out there – but to be a shephard of His flock takes a heck of a humble man and one willing to continually die to self! Your needs come after all those that you lead and your families – what blessings await you in heaven? They don’t give out crowns for Jesus’ feet because you can swing a golf club right or better than anyone else. I’m all for being a Dad who knows who His Father in heaven is and the only reward you seek is His! Forget the recognition of 1st graders and I pray one day your son looks you in the eye and says – Dad you are the coolest Dad I ever met because you always showed me how much you loved Jesus more than me!

    In His amazing grace,
    Jill

  78. I’m speechless! Well, on second thought maybe not, but I am extremely impressed! I thought for sure that last part with the machete, bowling ball, and egg was going to be a joke. That was really amazing.

  79. Okay… so I can juggle too. I was a “Delaware Clown” growing up… so spent a few summers learning how to fall without hurting yourself, walking on stilts, riding a unicycle and juggling. Granted I still bean myself with a club occasionally. The machete and bowling ball and egg… man… that would kill my back! *applause*

Oh and I’m a mean baker. I won our church bakeoff. LOL. *shrug*

  83. THAT’S the skill every head pastor needs: JUGGLING! How’d I miss that?!

Still, I think the gal who got 5 kids through Wal-Mart and all lived to tell about trumps your skills, unless of course, you can juggle FIVE objects (which I’ve heard you CAN). Still, I’m awed at jugglers.

The thing is, though… my husband is the best golf instructor EVER! :-D

  86. I juggle a little myself. Not quite the Pete caliber but I keep things in the air, most of the time.

I surprised my youngest grandson with the talent and of course he immediately wanted to show me he could do it too. He is two. There was a lot of crap thrown around the living room that night.

  88. Does dry witt count as a talent?

I had to learn to juggle in college, my acting teacher had nothing better or nothing else to teach us I guess. I wasn’t very good at it, of couse smashing my finger in my dorm room door the day before juggle day probably has something to do with it.
