Your Favorite Chick Flicks

Brandi and I celebrated Valentine’s Day last night since I usually spend Saturday night prepping for Sunday’s message.

We decided to have a low key night at home where we grilled steak and watched a chick flick. We rented “Night in Rodanthe”.

poster

We had an awesome night together, but I have to be honest and say this wasn’t my favorite movie. Not because there were no explosions, car chases, or suspenseful endings. It just wasn’t the most compelling story.  You can do much better for Valentine’s Day.

I don’t want some of you to make the same mistake tonight so let’s make sure you get a good chick flick to watch.

What’s your favorite chick flick ever?

I’ll confess mine is “The Notebook.”

I’ve never seen pride and prejudice. Might have to watch that one next time I’m forced to watch a chick flick. :)

I said that, not because it’s so romantic, but because it’s so funny and true to life about family life.

How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days or the best movie ever—- Dirty Dancing! Happy endings are overrated. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a good one for all of us out there that are happily single today!

  10. Beautiful Intellectual February 14, 2009 at 8:12 am #

The Holiday. Its just perfect :)

But yeah, definitely check out P&P. If you can bear it, the Colin Firth version, but I think you’ll still get BUCKETLOADS of points for suggesting the recent-er film version (yes, recent-er IS a word…I’m an English major and I say so :p)

I love Shining Through – oldie but goodie with Melanie Griffith and Michael Douglas. Also high on the list is A Walk To Remember.

And WHY do men resort to calling them chick flicks?! I hate that! A good, compelling love story is NOT just for women. Seriously.

  12. bill (cycleguy) February 14, 2009 at 8:19 am #

My wife is not a chick flick kind of woman. She prefers the shoot ‘em up/blow ‘em up kind (Ford, Willis, Bourne) If I was to pick one I like While You Were Sleeping (funny moments), Message in a Bottle (I like KC…no comments) but my favorite would be Titanic.

    Happy Valentine’s Day! :)

The Notebook is good — I love it that you like it!

pride and prejudice is amazing – but not the new one – the colin firth version – it is an investment of time so for your “regular time slot for a chick flick” i’d say “how to lose a guy in 10 days”

When I think of “chick flick” I think of a shallow, “it’s OK if we talk through it” movie. But great love stories, I think those should have their own category.

    IQ

plain and simple. Not only is it a chick flick (which my hubby even LOVES this one)… it is funny and just plain decent and CUTE!
With Meg Ryan and Einstein. When I first rented it, I watched it 4 times right in a row. You’ll LOVE it!

    I also like:
    Return to Me
    Only You
    Sabrina

  45. Carrie February 14, 2009 at 5:33 pm #

The Notebook … hands down. I cry everytime. I watch it every time it’s on tv and I know when the commercial breaks will be. Sad, I know. It’s just so what I think love is all about. My husband even enjoyed it (the first 20 times I made him watch it).

Now, if my hubby were answering this … he’d say “anything with Matthew McConaughy because it’s sure to get Carrie in the mood.” And yes, he’s right. :(

    Happy Valentine’s Day!

Most of the above listed movies, especially Love Actually (except for language and brief nudity), and the older Pride and Prejudice,

The rule or chick flicks is this – to compensate for the predictably lame storyline, the lead actress needs to be ridiculously hot. Preferably, Kate Beckinsale. All you got was Diane Lane?! A pathetic effort, my friend…

No no no – the Princess Bride is not a chick flick! It is one of the best movie EVER and way beyond the “chick flick” genre! Love love love that movie!

If we are going to talk about “romantic movies” with a twist, Charade is another good one.

I despise chick flicks. However, I did watch 27 Dresses recently and really liked it. For the single girl that’s been to too many weddings without one of her own, it was therapy. It was a sweet story with alot of humor.

And the dresses… geez… the sad part is that they are probably not exaggerating.

I’m really not a huge fan of chick flicks. I yelled my way though “P.S. I love you” recently (all in the name of ‘I really need to make spend some time with my nonchristian mates’) and I detest the BBC extended version of Pride & Prejudice (which seems that every Christian woman in the UK loves apart from me).

But…there are a few that I love: Devil Wears Prada, Notting Hill and Amelie.

Nights in Rodanthe was pretty bad especially compared to the book which is much different. I reread it right before we saw the movie and I was mad they changed so much. Some movies that weren’t mentioned are Say Anything, Sleepless in Seattle and 16 Candles. Confessions of a Shopaholic is very good too! That was part of our Valentine’s date. Ken liked it too.

    Hi,
I just came cross this discussion and am hoping that one of you can help me with a mystery movie. Back in or around 1988 I saw a movie that I want to rent for my daughter to see. For the life of me, I can’t recall the name and have found nothing that looks like it could be it. It was a romantic tear-jerker that takes place in late 19th/early 20th century England. A teenage son of a high society family falls in love with a girl from a poor background. They meet at a summer estate or vacation place where she works as a maid, I think. Like in The Notebook, the theme is about how class differences and external forces work to keep lovers apart. I don’t know the names of any of the actors. Does this movie ring a bill to anyone!? If so, I’d be very grateful if you could let me know at blbehrmann@hughes.net. Thank you! Barb
