We don’t get a lot of snow here in Nashville. Yesterday we had about 1/2 inch of snow, that’s really not enough to go sledding so you have to improvise. I call it redneck sledding.

Tell me about your favorite snow memory?

We have a place in town called “Brown’s HILL”. On snow days/night, nearly the whole town shows up ready for sledding down this very steep hill (drive). It is so steep, the sledder ebds up travelling at a high rate of speed-kinda’ dangerous, but Oh, so fun!
Great memories dating back to my high school years and then later with my own children who are now grown and still go back to Brown’s Hill.
you guys make the coolest memories
LOL. It has got to be when I was about 14 and we had a snow day and my crush/first love came over and we built and awesome fort/tunnel in the snow banks. We made out, it was the best! LOL. You would think it would be a memory
(opps, sent that) I will finish.
You would think it would be a memory with my kid or husband, but nope, this one with Brian tops them all by far! Ahhhh.
My favorite was my freshman year in college. It began to snow late in the day…by mid evening we had a foot or so and everyone was out on the campus running around like mad–1) wondering if class would be cancelled and 2) how long we could stay out in it. We stayed up all night to hear that class was cancelled and then we crashed all day. It was magical. I think we got 18-20 inches that time!
Snow… What is Snow???? I suppose last year would be the best snow memory – It was our little boys (6 & 7) FIRST snow
. We got maybe an inch – but they had a blast and we made miniature snowmen. It brings such joy to watch the kids get so excited!
Love the redneck sledding – looks like fun
That video is hilarious! Looks like ya’ll made the most out of yesterday’s “snow storm.”
@Dana, Jett made a snowman that was maybe a foot tall. I’ll post pics later.
Ha! That’s great! We did this as well growing up in Illinois, (pretty flat where I lived) but we usually had a bit more snow to get pulled around in. One year we all got pulled around on the hood off of an old truck! How’s that for redneck.
Favorite snow memory….parents were ALWAYS home with us since they were both school teachers. So all the neighborhood kids ended up at our house. Playing in the snow and TONs of board games and puzzles.
My dad got in trouble when he was a teenager because he and his friends were sledding on a car hood being pulled by his VW Beetle on the road…..and met my grandfather coming home from work. I think he was grounded for weeks! Gotta love redneck sledding!
The only place I’ve ever actually sledded was when we lived in W. Germany…plenty of snow! TX – not so much!!! We had an ICE day yesterday.
BTW, Genderanalyzer.com thinks this blog is written by a woman -
We guess http://www.withoutwax.tv is written by a woman (60%), however it’s quite gender neutral.
Too funny!!! quite gender neutral???
i just couldn’t narrow it down to 1 favorite memory
but it it sure was easy to narrow it down to 2 because i think it only snowed twice during my entire childhood
i grew up in Austin, TX
We get alot of snow every year – like today we had another 6 inches. Our lawn is about 2 feet higher than the sidewalk! I loved taking my girls out in the snow when they were little, often times the snow banks were taller than them! They were so cute in their little snow suits, fuzzy mittens and snow coverd hats!
Back in the mid-80′s, Nashville had one winter with some really really good snow. Even though we had a great hill in my yard, my neighbors had an even better, steeper and longer hill.
I took my sled across the street and down into their back yard… and off I went. Down down down… and into a broken down fence… up and over… landing face first on the other side in the snow.
I don’t remember anything after that.
growing up in indiana we had so many snow days but a few fun ones were sliding on our frozen pond and digging out forts between a hill and our house. we could sit up in them and actually play in there. and last year right before we moved here we had a huge snow and the girls and pat had a great snowball fight. there is just something magical about a snow day.
Growing up in Alaska, snow memories are plentiful! My family often had multiple pet dogs. We quickly discovered that the ideal time to potty-train a young pup was in the winter. Anytime “something” happened indoors, we’d open the front door and toss the pup into what was often more than 2 feet of snow. As a kid, I remember laughing endlessly at seeing a little furball disappear into the fluffy snow, only to plow it’s way back to us, looking like it was drenched in icing. Typically, it only took 2-4 experiences of snow-bombing and the dog was house-broken!
Amusement = free
Potty-training = necessary
Seeing furball disappear into snowbank = priceless!
Then there was the time we built a snow-fort, only to find that a neighboring moose found our fort to be a perfect resting place. Imagine seeing a moose sleeping in your snow-fort! It was like the Alaskan version of a dragon in your castle scenario…
My all time favorite involves Charlie the Moose. One cold, harsh winter moose were invading the city because food was scarce outside urban areas. We had our kitchen window open a little for air-flow. We turned around and Charlie the Moose had nudged the window open and was eating my mom’s plants off of the kitchen table! Thus began a series of encounters with Charlie the Friendly Moose.
ok, that was seriously tooo tooo funny. makes me think we sure don’t appreciate what we have up here in the north! my son has been sledding once this year and only went down our hill once when he flew off the sled and hit our shed / deck stairs. And that was the end of that!
My fave snow memory is probably the year of our wedding when my hubby and I made a Bride and Groom “snow couple” in the front yard of our house. Now I have to go dig up some pics of that for our upcoming anniversary!
I just have to say that I was laughing so hard watching the video that a coworker came over to see what I was watching! It looks like it was a lot of fun. My snow memory – My son and I went to Maine to visit relatives. My son who is now 15 was 4 at the time. We lived in Dallas so he had not experienced “real” snow. There was 5 feet of snow on the ground and the sun was starting to melt it. This formed an ice glazed coating over the mounds. He was trying to climb up to the top of the mound and the ice broke. He was in the snow up to his arm pits. Ralphie, Ralphie help me I can’t get up!!!
Working on ignoring memories of the 5 in gash to the bone in the top of my head from my one Red Neck Sledding incident when I was 10…oh glory….not thinking, not thinking…not thinking. Okay, I can do this… good memory…the day we actually got to see snowflakes in all their gloriously unique designs…they were the size of pencil erasers and we could actually see all the different geometric designs. I’M STILL IN AW!
Valentine’s Day 4-5 years ago, in Dallas. Big snow, my wife and three daughters at home with their number one Valentine. Me. It’s good to be husband and dad.
LOL…love it! Love to see people enjoying the moment and not missing the opportunity to build memories!
That is really funny…and kinda looks a wee painful maybe?
Good times!
Favorite memory…sleigh riding on a golf course with my entire family , cousins, aunt and uncle….was a killer long run off the 18th hole and the walk back up was unbelievably long! Worth it though!
@Pam, Ouch! We may all have to wear safety helmets next time.
“mud facial” from the back of the atv…that’s got redneck written all over it.
We are traveling some in the late spring. Hope to stop by your church when we pass through!! Hopefully we can time it out to be there for a Sunday morning service. We are also trying to visit the church near Atlanta–the one who made “Facing the Giants”. Sorry can’t think of the name of it right now.
) But I’m sure we could find it.
Take care,
Amy
@Amy, we would love to see you here!
That was funny…good times! When I was little I use to slide down the hill in my parent’s front yard. When I got a little older, my friends and I got a bunch of sleds and tied them to the back of a truck and went sledding down some country roads. We would sled past these dogs that would chase us. It was some good, clean, adult fun.
Where I grew up , there was a large hill in the woods behind our house. When a big snow would come, all our friends would come over and play all day. My mom would make huge pots of soups and stews and hot chocolate for everyone. We ran in and out all day. Those days are still the greatest of my childhood memories.
Not sure which I enjoyed more – the actual footage or the fact that you used that music in the background. classic.
There are so many, but I am going to share the one me and you experienced several years ago. For some strange reason, Me, you and a couple other fools decided to let our neighbor pull us behind his truck. The best part was the “homemade” sled we used. We all piled on a 4′x 8′ sheet of plywood which was attached to the truck with rope. This was not our finest moment. We went on the ride from you know where!!! What were we thinking??? We were covered in snow and had been whipped in 5 different directions. We lived to tell about it but man were we stupid.
BUT it was fun at the time….
when i was younger, we had a blizzard. there was so much snow, and i was so little, that i couldn’t walk through the snow–i couldn’t lift my legs out of it!
Having grown up in Alaska, most of my snow memories are not exactly happy ones. You know it is going to be a bad day when you open the front door and see nothing but a wall of white you have to dig through just to get outside. I do remember the snow drifts being so high that we could start at the peak of the roof on my 2 story house and slide all the way to the ground becuse the snow had drifted all the way to the edge of the roof from the ground level. The last of the drifts would usually melt away sometime in May.
SLED CAM! I LOVE IT!
When I was four we lived on a lake and when it froze over my dad put my in front of him on the sled and we’d glide down the hill from the house to the frozen lake below. Great fun! I recall thinking it was clever to push my dad off the back of the sled once we were slowing down. I did that twice. Then dad began to teach me about baseball. He said, “Have you ever heard the expression three-strikes-and-your-out?”
What a riot! Hopefully no one used a Redneck’s last words: “Watch this!”
@B.J., Dude, those were some good time. I’ll never forget that night.
Was that the sound of guns being fired at the end of that “hip hop” song or was that the backfire of the 4 wheeler? I think it was a “9″, I didn’t realize you were a gangsta, Pete.
We lived in forest falls, ca for about three yrs. Elevation 6000 ft. I had a romantic notion that snow was all about sledding, rosy cheeks, roaring fires and hot chocolate. The first time it snowed, it was all that. Then we realized in the morning that the snowplow’s favorite place to berm up the snow was right at our street. Even when it only snowed a foot, we’d literally have six, icy, packed feet of snow blocking us from the main road. Our kids loved to go sledding down the hill behind our house on those plastic, round discs, often making our English springer spaniel ride down with them. I don’t miss the snow. After living in phx since 2001, my blood is so thin that I’ve got a scarf on when it’s less than 50 degrees outside. I’m an official desert wimp!
you seriously need to go north were there IS snow. your poor family. so deprived of real sled riding
my fave…growing up in NE Ohio, my favorite snow event was snowmobile riding as a SMALL kiddo. we would sometimes get so much snow that we couldn’t use the snowmobile because it was to deep and fluffy.
snow angles were fun…till you got the snow up your coat and your back was wet and cold.
winter of 76-77 was my favorite winter…lots of snow and our family raised funds by selling firewood to those on the rich side of town. lots of fun family times and memories.
in 3rd grade my friend and I went redneck sledding using a gator instead of a 4 wheeler. I had never driven it before. I looked back to check on her and ran into her Dad’s super expensive white fence and shattered a whole section.
Our boys (Soren 3 and Tal 2) watched that movie at least 15 times before dinner tonight.
Too cute!
We lived in IL for 3 winters. Our last one there we got about 15 inches in one shot. My favorite memory is my kids going out and being able to break icicles off the roof because the snow was piled that high.
The other thing is I wanted to shoot the snow plow driver. Every time we got the end of our drive way cleared off, he would drive by to plow the road and cover the end of the driveway again. Very frustrating!!
Snow brings many fond memories. One of the most fun times I remember is when we lived in the apartment behind DQ and would sled down the hill up into the DQ parking lot then come in for cookies and hot chocolate. One of the funniest was a few years ago Lisa Jenkins and I coming off Kendall Embry’s hill in a deer sled and having to jump before landing in the pond. I loved your video of redneck sledding!
I live in Mississippi. I don’t have a snow memory.
I was in high school. We camped out and it snowed like crazy (Virginia). I had driven my dad’s new truck over to the camping spot since it had 4-wheel drive. It wasn’t long before we decided to make doughnuts in the field. Uhh…the one tree in the middle of the field (seriously the only one)…yeah I side swiped it and broke the mirror off the door.
For some reason dad wouldn’t let me borrow his truck for a while after that night! I tried to encourage him that it could have been worse, but it didn’t help…
So I wouldn’t mark this as my “favorite” memory, but its etched in my mind pretty good!!
You all had so much fun with that little bit of snow! Makes me wish I could send you the 12 inches we received the other day here in Upstate NY. Beautiful Family, Beautiful Memories!
Shout out to Northway Church and Pastor Buddy in Upper State NY!
That was so awesome! Looks like y’all had lots of fun. Oh what great memories.
I laughed so hard from about 129-133!!!! i love sledcam!
Snowcat drag racing with three Tucker cats. Just like at the beginning of National Treasure.
Pete….
Where’s the SNOW?
