Catalyst and Cornhole

I’m down in Atlanta  for less than 24 hours having a series of different meetings. Our first stop was at the Catalyst office to talk about church, conferences, and life in general. We sat down with Ben Arment, who is the experience and innovation director for Catalyst and Brad Lomenick, the executive director of Catalyst.

I think Catalyst is the premier conference for Christian leaders and have personally benefited from attending for years now. They’ve transitioned from being “just a great conference” to being “an incredible leadership resource.”  It was an honor to sit down with these guys. I love the way God is using them to lead a movement of young leaders.

If you follow me on twitter you know there’s been a little “Cornhole” trash talk going back and forth with Ben. So without further ado I give you the video evidence. I’m not sure who was worse, Ben or Jenni. I’m just thankful they’re both much better leaders than they are corn hole throwers.  Final score 15-1.

Hey, what’s your favorite lawn game?

Ben is one cool cat and has a corn-derful toss. Hmmm ….lawn game….. I would have to say Lawn darts – loved it as a kid until I injured the neighbor kid from down the street. I hear they have banned them.

    washers.

  4. Tony York January 23, 2009 at 9:16 am #

I also loved lawn darts…. it was a backyard game with a certain level of risk involved. I guess, though, if I had to pick my favorite, it would be horse shoes.

I bought Cross Point sound dude a cornhole set for his last birthday. Maybe a cornhole tournament for the next church picnic is in order.

impressive win, Pete. Are you going to retire and go out on top or risk your perfect record in another match?

  7. Ben Arment January 23, 2009 at 9:35 am #

Pete you’re a ringer… you acted like you didn’t know what you were doing and then blew Jenni and me away. That’s cold bro. Cold. =)

first of all congrats on destroying your competitors.
i wanna know how you live in tennessee and have never played cornhole?
and my favorite yard game is cornhole.
we have built 2′x 2′ boxes with a pvc pipe in the middle and throw washers for our ‘cornhole’ but love playin bags too.

on an unrelated note, i really appreciate your heart and your words shared through this blog.
may God bless you and your family as well as your church family.
    peace out.

    @Britt, Absolutely. I think that’s a great idea.

  10. Toby January 23, 2009 at 9:46 am #

I was almost positive that cornholin was only done by us back of the woods Hoosiers! This is such a relief to be wrong :-) .

  11. angelbearoh January 23, 2009 at 9:59 am #

My very limited experiences with the game have taught me that you have to put quite a bit of loft under the bag, as a flatter trajectory would only make the bag skip off the surface of the board. How were you able to play with that low ceiling that forces you to throw in a flatter trajectory?

  12. Pete Wilson January 23, 2009 at 10:10 am #

@angelbearoh, I would have to humbly say I’m just really gifted at this game!! I didn’t realize it could be a spiritual gift but I think it is. :)

  13. Annabelle @ Christian Momma January 23, 2009 at 10:18 am #

I know it as Hillbilly Golf, however, I think it’s called Ladder Golf.

Let’s see and Monday’s blog will be on humility, and Tuesdays’ on edifying our fellow believers (Jenni)

  16. Jenni Catron January 23, 2009 at 11:40 am #

Dare I even comment? I have nothing to say in my defense except that tennis is really my sport. :)

  17. gitz January 23, 2009 at 11:40 am #

FANTASTIC. You know, we had tic-tac-toe-throw game in our basement growing up that was a lot like cornhole. You throw sacks at the tic-tac-toe board and the pieces would spin if you hit them and would switch from x’s to o’s. It was a riot… I wonder if they still make those?

As for lawn games… We had croquet but mostly were just playing kickball or football or basketball … six kids in my family so we always had even teams :)

I’m thinking you should definitely get a cornhole game before Brent and Tam get there… I’d like a video of that competition :)

  18. Pete Wilson January 23, 2009 at 12:16 pm #

@jenni, please don’t challenge me to a run or a game of tennis. At least not with a video camera around. :)

  19. Anita January 23, 2009 at 12:22 pm #

Great. Our friends from Texas play it with washers and call it (appropriately) washers. It’s a huge hit at their parties.

lawn chair + me reclining w/ cold beverage at side……

  21. Dawn Nicole Baldwin January 23, 2009 at 12:28 pm #

I think Jenni’s necklace was throwing off her balance. She was at a total disadvantage

  22. ncarnes January 23, 2009 at 12:33 pm #

I love cornhole. Great job on the win :)

  23. Zack January 23, 2009 at 12:56 pm #

nice rhett and link love with the soundtrack too.

  24. Randy Wood January 23, 2009 at 1:13 pm #

Pete, we love ya in Arkansas…. BUT, I would so waste you in a game of cornhole!!

  25. Pete Wilson January 23, 2009 at 2:04 pm #

    @Randy Wood, It’s on bro!! :)

  26. Dave Baldwin January 23, 2009 at 2:09 pm #

So Pete, just wanted to let you know — and I hate to tell you this — that there is an indoor edition of cornhole that you can purchase at the New York Giants website! It has the NY Giants helmet on it and everything. Really sweet! I’m telling you, it beats just regular ole cornhole. We aren’t quite that addicted to the game at our place. Looked like fun though.
    Blessings,
    Dave

  27. Jenni Catron January 23, 2009 at 2:41 pm #

@dawn nicole – I think you’re right! Between the necklace and boots, I couldn’t bring my A game. Very good point!

  28. Pete Wilson January 23, 2009 at 2:55 pm #

@Jenni Catron, you did bring some fashion to the game though!

  29. brent(inWorship) January 23, 2009 at 3:15 pm #

I thinks it is clear who was worse. Sorry Jenni :)

    Hahaha!!!

  30. Brenda January 23, 2009 at 3:27 pm #

Oh, I’d love to try cornhole! I think the only lawn games I’ve ever played were croquet and lawn darts. Croquet only works well if your lawn is like a well-groomed putting green, which ours is not. Lawn darts is pretty fun though.

  31. crumbsonmyfloor January 23, 2009 at 3:44 pm #

Cornhole, looks like a game I would brake a bone playing. Please keep me in your prayers, I broke my elbow last night and maybe tore something in my knee. All I was doing was playing volleyball at our church!

    Take care,
    Amy

  32. Jarrod Morris January 23, 2009 at 3:50 pm #

Did you video Jenni’s reaction to loosing? Or can you not show that?

  33. getvision January 23, 2009 at 5:09 pm #

    blind-folded lawn darts!

  34. Rick January 23, 2009 at 5:56 pm #

I am a child of th 60s/70s, corn hole had a different meaning. I really like this game but the name needs to be changed, bag toss, corn filled bag tossed at at a board, lawn bag toss, anything but cornhole.

  35. Carey January 23, 2009 at 6:03 pm #

Favorite yard game (introduced to us by our neighbors) is ladder ball!! It might be the next big thing. :) Also called ladder golf. check it out.

  36. seekingrecklessabandon January 23, 2009 at 8:55 pm #

We play cornhole at camp! With a homemade set. It’s sweet. We counselors then play all summer long and someone just keeps cornhole in there truck and brings it to all the sweet gatherings. I have never seen it played inside and not in blistering heat….

  37. Candy January 23, 2009 at 9:59 pm #

I would totally team up with Jenni and play doubles against any of those guys. Pete may have a great corn hole toss, but I think my forehand might smoke him. I call the deuce court.

  38. Patty V. January 23, 2009 at 10:22 pm #

To quote Forrest Gump, “Je-nay!” oh my. You are worse than I am at that game.
In our neck of the woods (Chicago and I think Illinois in general) we call this game “bags”.
I have to agree with the others..favorite lawn game growing up was jarts.

  39. katdish January 24, 2009 at 2:47 am #

Seriously, no offense to Jenni, but if you go to Wikipedia and search “how to throw like a girl” that video comes up. Cornhole? Man does that sound backwoods. Here’s my favorite game: You get a pint of Cherry Garcia and a spoon and watch The Office on tivo. I call it “Pie hole”.

  40. Pete Wilson January 24, 2009 at 8:41 am #

@Patty V, I will agree that “bags” sounds a lot more sophisticated than “cornhole”.

@Carey, I’ve seen the “ladder golf” once in a campground. Looks like fun but I’ve never seen it played around here.

  41. Pam January 24, 2009 at 10:07 am #

Oh my goodness… Kathy(katdish), I literally laughed out loud! I was gonna say: down here in Texas we play washers and horseshoes, but I completely forgot about the uber popular game, Pie Hole! The best part about Pie Hole? There are no losers, only winners!

And the video was hilarious, Pete, I laughed out loud at it too! And Jenni- I would demand a re-match if I were you- they definitely sent in a ringer(PW), not fair.

  42. katdish January 24, 2009 at 11:46 am #

Pete Wilson: disciple, husband, father, dynamic church leader. And now he adds yet another title to his long list of accomplishments: The Great Cornholio!

  43. mandythompson January 26, 2009 at 3:49 pm #

I am greatly disturbed by the name of that game.
    GREATLY
