Bushisms vs Peteisms
It was nice to see Bush not take himself so seriously yesterday in the final press conference of his presidency. During the press conference he took a stab at himself by digging out an old Bushism and using the word “misunderestimate“. This was a word he stated in the immediate aftermath of the disputed 2000 election. One of the first and perhaps most iconic Bushisms.
I know not many people are going to miss George Bush, but I will miss his ability to make up words. I know his pain. I do this all the time and whenever he created a new one it just made me feel more human.
Every Sunday after the 8:30 a.m. service I meet with this team of five people in my office to review the service including a quick critique of my message. This usually consist of them helping me figure out what’s connecting and what’s not and then there’s someone who usually speaks up and gives me a list of the words I’ve either mis-pronounced or words I’ve used that are not actually words. These would be Peteisms.
For instance, I created a new Peteism the Sunday before last when I said: creagious. I’m not exactly sure what that is, but I’m going to define it as the ability to be courageously creative. You’re creagious.
I think we should embrace the art of making words up. Once you’ve mastered the english language like George Bush and myself you have to implement some strategery and creagiously begin to explore a new language.
So let’s have some fun today. If you could make up a word to add to the english vocabulary, what would you add?

my favorite is one my youngest daughter came up with several years ago – prettiful! Yes, around here, life is prettiful!!!
Now, is that a mix of pretty and beautiful or does it point to the fact that Mom’s calendar is usually pretty full???
We use it to say our girls are prettiful as they head out the door!!!
Whatcha call it? or….thingamajig( I think that is how you would spell it)
I actually had a college professor tell us to make up words when we couldn’t find an existing word that fit what we were trying to say. I’ve been doing that ever since.
i was listening to your podcast yesterday while running and I thought I heard a “creagious” in there
I told my husband the other day that something was neato-er. He laughed at me and insisted that my word wasn’t a “real” word until it showed up in the dictionary. To which I responded that Shakespeare made up all kinds of words that are now part of the English language. And besides, it takes the dictionaries a few years to catch on to new words anyway. We all just have to do our part to put gems like “creagious” and “neato-er” into common usage. I think I feel a new New Year’s resolution coming on!
I actually had a dictionary of ‘La’ words when I was at uni. My friends and I started making note of them all.
One of my most commonly used ‘la’ terms is ‘fooved’
Basically this is when your hair is doing something strange or has got kind of messy after being subjected to the elements. Then your hair gets all ‘fooved’.
@bluegoose – I use ‘prettiful’ too. Only I spell it ‘prettyful’. I think it’s kind of beautiful in a girly way and I only use it to describe humans…!
Mergatroid. I love it when Snagglepuss says “Heavens to Mergatroid”.
Yumalicious. I said that no less than a thousand times in December while I was eating everything that wasn’t nailed down…
Chubalicious…that’s my word for January.
Your blog is “FANTABULOUS” (my personal favorite)
Crapology….I’m sure there is more..craparama…..hmmm
Oh the laughter! My youngest daughter came up with a word that makes me laugh often, even though most times she is highly irritated when she says it … “You MEANIAC!”
Forgunctiveness–Reluctant Forgiveness
Oh, you want it in a sentence? She thought I forgave her for calling me a fat, old man, but she only got a lil bit of forgunctiveness.
My favorite “pete”ism is when you say self-deceive myself
(Always reminds me of that scene in Austin Powers – “Allow myself to introduce … myself”)
My dad would always substitute other words or nonsense words for curse words, so we grew up hearing things like “Judas Priest!” “ishkabibble!” (don’t ask me what that means) or I don’t know if he ever said this but I’ve heard “cad sarnit!.” He also says “uff-dah” a lot as do many North Dakotans.
Oooooo! I love made up words! I’m fond of words ending in “tacular” and “tastic myself like “sucktacular” and “craptastic”.
“Creagious” is the awesomest! (see another made up word!)
Incidentally, Pete is featured on my blog today! (end of shameless self-promotion.)
@olsanar, ohhhh that’s a good one. You’re right, I do say that.
Since Bush has been the only president with an MBA, I don’t think there’s an issue with intelligence. Whether it was conscious or unconscious on his part, I think it was a ‘strategery’ to make people ‘misunderestimate’ him, in order to run circles around his critics, which he did on a regular basis.
The question is, is that your stategy, Pete? LOL
BTW, I adore the word creagious and will now use it proudishly.
Today it might be of the 4 letter variety so I will try not to add it to the “New Unabridged Petetionary.”
i have a hybrid form of this disease. i will switch the sections of words that i mean to use in a sentence. i call it a “spoonerism”
Fantabulous…..Fantastic + Fabulous = above and beyond.
OH, thank you for talking about ‘creagious’. I, too, was listening to the podcast yesterday and I had to grin at that one. Now I don’t feel so guilty for enjoying that little slip of the tongue.
My 9 year old son’s book of the month club is currently reading “Frindle” by Andrew Clements, which is about creativity and the power of words. Frindle is the main characters name for a pen, for those of you unfamiliar with the book. I just love Sam’s teacher! I’m not very creative when it comes to vocabulary, but my wonderful husband Steve keeps us in stiches. My favorite is the day he exclaimed Vi-O-La! Which I questioned 3 times before it finally occurred to me that he was trying to say Voila! As in tah-dah! Voila is used to call attention, to express satisfaction or approval, or to suggest an appearance as if by magic.
I have 2 one I made up as a little girl…expardonate me…I just thought it sounded more exotic than pardon me or excuse me….and my one my daughter made up as a little girl…sunbrellio….for umbrella, come rain or shine!
My son used to say humassive instead of huge or massive and it has stuck with our family.
I like the word “jinormous” from the movie Elf. My kids have always made up words, some we still use. I have a place on my blog where I actually list these. Mostly, its kids mispronouncing words when they are little but its always cute. My son said the lady next door had her Christmas Village on snow “pillament” instead of batting. Last night my daughter said “ladies and gentlefish” the she started talking about her “forthhead and scout” forehead and scalp. My son used to call something mushy “bushy”. We still use the word bushy, he is 15 now……The other day I had a piece of glitter on my face. Instead of my daughter telling me to come closer so she could get it,she said, “zoom in a little” she’s 5. I could go on for days….I remember in July, Webster’s added 100 new words to the dictionary.
Here is the link to submit a new word. So be creagious, submit your word, maybe they will like too!

My husband does this on a regular basis. He keeps us laughing, and my daughter and I keep a list to entertain guests with. His seem to be associated with Restaurants more than anything else, but not exclusively. At Chili’s, he ordered “gutless” chicken (translated “guiltless chicken”). Our server lost her composure. Also one night I called on my home and asked what he would like for me to pick up for dinner. He said that he wanted some “Chicken Pups” from Krystal. (translated Krystal Chix).
Strategery
In Steven’s Mansfield excellent book on President Bush, The Faith of George Bush, he states that it is believed that Bush has dyslexia. He has made light of it and allow himself to laugh it off, but it is also the reason he is so brilliant but appears/ sounds like he doesn’t know proper English. I love him. His sense of humor and balance of how he is totally ‘comfortable in his own skin’ is refreshingly pleasant in a politician. Oh, on a God point, in this book Mansfield also accounts that several times people have seen Bush prostrate laying in the oval office praying to God. He is much more of a man than we know.
Blogoworld; twittersphere; dog pit(the dog’s underarm), elbow pit, knee pit (add pit to any joint to signify its the underside–invented by my 4 yr old Annaliese)
My daughter told me that her “leg-elbow” hurt the other day, talking about her knee.
This post is really grood.
it’s very ch-ch-chold up here in MN today. (chilly + cold)
My son (6) says he is working his “stragedy” out when playing a game… (sometimes a bit prophetic if he loses the game, it really is a tragedy for him – he is not good with losing!)
a friend of mine from college used to always call herself “smoffed” or “smoft” (not sure how to spell it) because she had very little sense of smell. I have no idea if there is a true medical term for this, but we always thought she was creative and funny.
Kids are really great with coming up with these. and when you think about it, they really make sense (well, usually)! Another thing I love about children.
hypochrist – a fake Christian; hypoctrical Christ follower
Egreally – equally true
Carefaker – Someone who says they ‘caretake’ but do it with an empty heart. Someone who fakes sincerity. Antisincerity.
Melder – an elder who ‘molds himself’ into who he should be, instead of someone that he actually is. Artificial spiritualist.
Sorry, should have known by the first -ism that rigtht now I am a little cynical.
My oldest child came up with musictar = music + guitar. We still laugh and even though he is now 6, he still says it, only he now corrects himself. It is very sweet to remember these things…
My pastor makes up words, too! It is so funny! I like adding -age to works like amp-age (needing more amp) and microphone-age (needing help with you mic on stage). It just makes words sound fun =)
multiple times my husband has used the word adamated- which is a combination of adament and animated… he also likes to add “Y” on the ends of words. For example, that baby is very “cry-y” or “it’s very trafficky out today”.
Also, My kiddos love to say chillaxing and redunkulous (from Bolt). LOL
Ok, I love making up words. Today you have inspired me to create a word from thoughts of the day. I am proud of this word, and the word is……. found on blog as today’s post.
I worked at a Creagious Kids Childcare Center for 4 years. Crazy, huh? My boss said it ment “creative, courageous, contagious”
That’s a FANTISTIC word!!!!!
I love “creagious”! I will start using it today!
Fantabulous… fantastic and fabulous. Absoposilutely… absolutely and positive.
My grandpa once called a baby immature instead of premature when he was doing a baby dedication.
I still laugh about that to this day!
@Jenny, you mean absoposilutely isn’t a real word.
So that explains all of the noise coming from your office at 9:30am on Sunday, while my small group is trying to concentrate in the conference room. Good thing we are meeting at my house, now. LOL
My mom used to get the words “biopsy” and “autopsy” switched up in her head. You can imagine the shock when she would say, “Did you hear about so-and-so? They are having an autopsy tomorrow!”. Scary stuff right there.
My son had great names for animals when he was little:
An elephant was a longnose.
A porcupine was a prickleback.
And a skunk was a squirtbutt.
But our favorite word that he coined was “amn’t” as in “I don’t want to, so I amn’t going to do that.” Of course it was often paired with the phrase “a few whiles” as in “I amn’t ready to go yet, but in a few whiles I will be.”
My brain’s a bit rusty…maybe I can think up a new word in a few whiles. :^)
I love creagious! I’ve used it frequently since you made it up?
Thought of another one I coined the other day:
lame + awesome = lawesome.
“katdish leaves some lawesome comments!”
I’m all ove creagious – already used it a couple of times today!
One of my favorites is: Ridiculi = ridiculous squared
I’m one of those who meets with a pastor after a service. I reckon that if a word communicates, it’s a good word, no matter it’s origin or age. I usually only try to bring things to his attention that might detract from his message. Like when he said “depraved” instead of the “deprived” he had intended.
We had a guest preacher once who used the word “inspirated” instead of “inspired”….took me a few minutes to figure out what he meant. He was a plumber, though, so I guess “inspirated” kinda works.
the dinner I made this evening was craptastic ( fantastic crap) in my opinion.
My favorite comes from my kids as well. They aren’t trying to make up a new word, but it’s still great. My 4 year old says all the time, “that’s ascusting” which I have adopted and determined to mean, “astoundingly disgusting” or appallingly disgusting.” Normally, it’s directed at whatever we are having for dinner regardless of their like for it 2 weeks ago. Go figure.
Connecting to Impact
In the 80′s, there used to be a show on HBO called “Not Necessarily the News”. Rich Hall, a regular member of the cast hosted a weekly review of made up words sent in by viewers. He titled these words “sniglets”. Well, I sent one in once, but alas, it never got used. It scarred me – deeply – that my word wasn’t used. And now, in what is no doubt an act of God’s grace in my life, I have an opportunity to throw this word out there again for the world to see. OK – you know when you pour coke (diet in my case) over ice in a glass and you have to wait for the foam to die back down before you can pour more in? Well, the lapse of time it takes for the foam to subside is – FOAMELAPSESUBSIDITIVITY! Yeah, I know, genius right!

I know there are many women out there just similar me. Each one of us hurt the hurt and sorrow of experiencing the fact that we will not have babies for the rest of our livings.
I just want to share my own experience about the strength of Pregnancy Miracle. This book is really honest and will offer you with facts and proves instead of beliefs.
it’s a book worth reading. In Person, I experience it as a “saving light”. ALso you might want to visit How to get pregnant fast to learn more about that.
Ha ha? I was just browsing around and took a look at these remarks. I can t believe there s still this much fascination. Thanks for writing about this.
