Mickey Turns 80

mickey_mouse_1117

I don’t know if you realized it, but Mickey Mouse turned 80 on Tuesday.

Not sure what it is about cartoons that is so entertaining, but they seem timeless. I can remember waking up early on Saturday mornings just so I could watch my favorites. I enjoyed the Snorkles and the Smurfs, but always went back to the classics.

A few of my favorite classics were…Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, and Woody Woodpecker.

So here’s today’s “all skate” question….

Who is your all time favorite cartoon character?

  1. Tommy Sircy November 20, 2008 at 7:53 am #

This is an easy one. The greatest cartoon character of all time is Sylvester.

  2. Jeff Honnold November 20, 2008 at 8:06 am #

For me it has to be Wile E. Coyote. I would watch every Saturday morning in hopes that I would get to see one of the Road runner\Coyote cartoons. His persistaence, faith in ACME products, inventions and unique ways of injuring himself would crack me up everytime. To this day, I STILL laugh when he puts a pair of rocket skates on or ends up getting squished like an accordian!

  3. Scott Williams November 20, 2008 at 8:07 am #

Fat Albert! Come on Cosby was so ahead of his time!

  4. Bonky's Mama November 20, 2008 at 8:20 am #

My husband tells me I am un-American. I’ve never liked cartoons.
Yes…weird. Just tryin’ to keep it real.

  5. Yvonne November 20, 2008 at 8:22 am #

I loved and still love Scooby Doo!

  6. Jan Connair November 20, 2008 at 8:26 am #

Johnny Quest was my absolute favorite when I was a kid. Of course, I would watch any cartoon you put in front of me, but that one was the coolest in my mind.

  7. Kathy November 20, 2008 at 8:28 am #

Bugs Bunny and Foghorn Leghorn were always my favorites.

  8. Heidi November 20, 2008 at 8:28 am #

Bugs Bunny – every Saturday morning when I was a kid!

  9. Pete Wilson November 20, 2008 at 8:28 am #

@Jan, Johnny Quest? That’s a new one for me. I’m going to have to look it up. He sounds cool though.

  10. Travis Thompson November 20, 2008 at 8:31 am #

    Yogi Bear.

Not even close. Plus, his sidekick was named Boo-boo. Bonus points.

    Runner up – Bullwinkle.

  11. Aaron November 20, 2008 at 8:39 am #

I prefer Warner Bros or Hanna Barberra (sp?) over anything Disney. My favorite character was Speedy Gonzalez (very un-PC I know). My favorite Looney Tune of all time though is Michigan J. Frog. You know, “Hello my baby, hello my honey …”

  12. Michelle November 20, 2008 at 8:42 am #

    Rocky & Bullwinkle.

  13. Beverly November 20, 2008 at 8:45 am #

Road Runner and Wile E Coyote. Age doesn’t matter. they can still make me laugh till my sides hurt. O.K. So that may show a simple mind, but it is the little things in life that make you smile

  14. Angie November 20, 2008 at 8:47 am #

Scooby Dooby Doo!!! I *was* Daphne…But I grew up and turned into Velma…..

  15. Robin November 20, 2008 at 8:52 am #

Casper the friendly ghost and the Archies.

  17. Carrie November 20, 2008 at 9:00 am #

    Tom and Jerry.

  18. Pete Wilson November 20, 2008 at 9:01 am #

@Gina, I totally forgot about Casper. Love him. Or was he a her? I can’t remember.

  19. Kath November 20, 2008 at 9:04 am #

I’m one of the few that just dont get cartoons! But I will stop and watch for just a couple seconds the roadrunners and Wylie the coyote. Beep! Beep!

  20. SHerri November 20, 2008 at 9:06 am #

    The pink panther.

    Totally COOL.

Never used words. (many lessons to be learned from him.)

  21. j4man November 20, 2008 at 9:11 am #

    Hmmmmmm….this is tough….love cartoons…Let me see:
    1) Droopy dog (I am happy – hooray)
    2) Bugs Bunny
    3) Underdog
    4) Pink Panther

I think that will do for now.

  22. Laura November 20, 2008 at 9:26 am #

I loved Pebbles and Bam-Bam from The Flintstone’s…it is funny, because I ended up giving birth to a little Bam-Bam myself :)

  23. Crystal November 20, 2008 at 9:47 am #

    Speedy Gonzalez and The Jetsons!

  24. Brandi P. November 20, 2008 at 9:52 am #

    Scooby!!!

  25. Pete Wilson November 20, 2008 at 9:52 am #

@Crystal, I totally forgot the Jetsons too. I love them. I was sure that we would be living that life by now. Bummer.

  26. Gina November 20, 2008 at 9:56 am #

Mr Magoo or was it McGoo? The guy who had the big glasses but couldn’t see a darn thing! Too funny!

  27. Jonathan Hopson November 20, 2008 at 10:10 am #

Duke from GI Joe. Loved that show & can’t wait to see what the new movie looks like.

  28. danielle November 20, 2008 at 10:16 am #

    goofy or tigger

  29. Jim A November 20, 2008 at 10:21 am #

Mickey and I share the same birthday (I am only 46, not 80) but I gotta go with Marvin the Martian. “Where is the kaboom? There was supposed to be an earth-shattering kaboom!”

  30. murphy24p November 20, 2008 at 10:22 am #

Seems all my favorites have been listed already; Scooby, Fat Albert, Pink Panther… Remember when Saturday morning was all about the cartoons? I miss that!

  31. Joni November 20, 2008 at 10:37 am #

Bugs Bunny and friends–especially when the rocket is zooming back to Earth and stops just before crashing because it ran out of fuel. And the frog–we still use that “hello my baby…” around here. Snoopy too. Although growing up, I watched just about every cartoon available to me.

  32. Heather November 20, 2008 at 10:38 am #

I’d love to see some old Road Runner and Cyote cartoons. Anyone know where you can see them now a days?

  33. Linnae Hoppe November 20, 2008 at 10:41 am #

LOVED the Jetsons. Piglet was also a favorite.

  34. Sally November 20, 2008 at 10:50 am #

I always enjoyed Penelope Pitstop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penelope_Pitstop) but nothing beat Bugs or Wiley Coyote.

  35. Jennifer November 20, 2008 at 10:54 am #

I loved Fragle Rock. I recently downloaded the them song. “Dance your cares away, worries for another day……..”

The Smurfs were pretty awesome too.

  36. tonyyork November 20, 2008 at 10:56 am #

I know you mean for us to give you a tv cartoon but I have to give props to Calvin & Hobbs from the comic strips.

Too bad the creator stopped writing new stuff for him.

I can’t pick a favorite from my Saturday morning childhood love affair. (Remember when cartoons were only on Saturday morning)? So I will mention a few:

    Yosemite Sam
    Bugs Bunny
    Tom & Jerry
    Heckle & Jeckle
    El Kabong
    Droopy
    Daffy Duck
    Foghorn Leghorn
    Sylvester & Tweety
Fat Albert ( & the BROOOOWWWNNNN Hornet!)
    Tarzan
Ali’s cartoon even though it was short lived
    The Super Friends
    He-Man
    Transformers
    Captain Caveman
    Speed Buggy
    Grape Ape

oh.. I could go on an on.

  37. Giant Idiot November 20, 2008 at 11:01 am #

    Bugs Bunny

  38. Pete Wilson November 20, 2008 at 11:03 am #

@tonyyork, I loved me some He-Man. That dude was cool.

  39. Michael November 20, 2008 at 11:13 am #

Ok, all the looney tunes were great, but I must confess Tigger has to be my favorite, otherwise I wouldn’t have him tattooed not once, but twice on my body. What’s the most wonderful thing about Tiggers…. is that I’m the only one. Pete, don’t worry about Johnny Quest, he is definitely before your childhood, but he and Hadji were cool.

  40. Christy November 20, 2008 at 11:17 am #

    I don’t think I can just name one….
    1. Sylvester & Tweety Bird
    2. Smurfs- except Brainy Smurf drove me crazy.
    3. Scooby Doo, until they added Scrappy Doo.

  41. My Twenty Cents Keeps Moving November 20, 2008 at 11:21 am #

    Hands down.. Donald Duck.

  42. Whitney November 20, 2008 at 11:21 am #

I loved the Muppet Babies! I had them on my 4th birthday cake :)

  43. Vicki November 20, 2008 at 11:34 am #

Davey and Goliath! A little boy Davey, and his dog, Goliath. Always had a good message to it.

  44. Anita November 20, 2008 at 11:48 am #

Charlie Brown! (Slowpoke Rodriguez deserves a place here somewhere; I have to give him a shout out)

  45. Michael Robison November 20, 2008 at 11:49 am #

My absolute favorite has always been Tom & Jerry! Now my boys love it. They watch it every morning when they get out of bed. Thanks God for Boomerang and OnDemand!

  46. Holly November 20, 2008 at 12:03 pm #

What about Hong Kong Fuy? Anyone remember him?

  47. Scot Justice November 20, 2008 at 12:12 pm #

Brak from Space Ghost Coast to Coast and Cartoon Planet that was on the Cartoon Network mid to late 1990′s. Spent many Friday nights when I was single grilling out at my apartment and watching Space Ghost (my wife Linda says this is why it took so long for me to get married:) Scot

  48. Jeff November 20, 2008 at 12:27 pm #

Maybe not an all-time fav, but a newer one that I (still) enjoy is Doug. Although, I liked him better on Nickelodeon than Sat morning (Disney’s adaptation).

I can’t believe you don’t know who Johnn Quest is…

Looking forward to seeing you later today.

  49. bustersdaughter November 20, 2008 at 12:46 pm #

I learned so much from Davie and Goliath but they aren’t my favorite…I think it was the Bugs Bunny show but I also liked Yogi and Boo boo

  50. Pete Wilson November 20, 2008 at 12:51 pm #

@Jeff, I loved Doug. I didn’t know they still ran that one.

  51. gitz November 20, 2008 at 12:53 pm #

All of us kids loved Tom and Jerry, but the Jetsons were a close second.

OH! And I just remembered… I loved the Tasmanian devil dude when Bugs Bunny would pretend to be the evil professor like a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde… it was like a weird sci-fi episode or something.

  52. hernseugene November 20, 2008 at 12:56 pm #

Hey whats sup PETE!! Its been a while, but my favorite cartoon is TAZ!!!!

  53. Scot Justice November 20, 2008 at 1:03 pm #

@hernseugene, what about EEK the cat, “it never hurts to help”, but often it does.

  54. New York Mary November 20, 2008 at 1:46 pm #

    Mr. Magoo
Second place is Casper the Friendly Ghost

  55. Pete Wilson November 20, 2008 at 1:55 pm #

@hernseugene, What’ up man? I’ve missed you. Good to see you back.

Smurfs, Duck Tails & Jem-truly outrageous

  62. ron roark November 20, 2008 at 2:14 pm #

wow! So many to talk about. I really liked laugh olympics & super friends. Any show that brought other characters together. I lived the scooby episodes when they met people like the Harlem Globe Trotters. This is probably why I like reality shows like Survivor & real world / road rules challenges! Lol!

  63. Vince November 20, 2008 at 2:24 pm #

    Fraggle Rock anyone?

  64. Steve November 20, 2008 at 2:40 pm #

Inspector Gadget. Was totally addicted in the late ’70s.

    Go, go, gadget arm!

  65. Ammi O November 20, 2008 at 2:42 pm #

I didn’t find my all time favorite until I was an adult. It’s Invader Zim, it cracks me up every time. We watch as a family.

Fraggle Rock isn’t a cartoon, they where puppets, puppets that rock, but still puppets.

As a kid I loved Smurfs, Snorkles, and Jem. When I got a little older I liked Pinky and The Brain.

I apparently have a thing for cartoons that are trying to take over the world, The Brain & Invader Zim.

  66. Pete Wilson November 20, 2008 at 2:47 pm #

@Steve, Inspector Gadget! Oh my gosh. I loved him. I so wanted to be that dude!

  67. Jim A November 20, 2008 at 2:49 pm #

What, no love for SpongeBob SquarePants? I can’t believe no one mentioned SpongeBob.

And what about Bob and Larry? Can’t forget VeggieTales. Mr. Lunt and Pa Grape are a riot.

    5) Droopy
    6) Jetsons
    7) Flintstones

    ad infinitum…

  69. Tal Prince November 20, 2008 at 2:58 pm #

Dude, Daffy Duck absolutely owns me. Especially OLD Daffy Duck before he got all grumpy and greedy. When he was actually, dare I say, “daffy.” GREAT stuff. The latter stuff is funny, too. Especially Duck Dogers, and his epic struggles with Marvin the Martian. C’mon – that stuff is timeless.

The entire Looney Tunes family is just great stuff for me.

  70. Mike Ellis, Church For Men Florida November 20, 2008 at 3:01 pm #

    My husband. LOL.

  86. nigel November 20, 2008 at 4:16 pm #

Rocky & Bullwinkle, just cos my uncle had a moose head up on his wall with a plushy chimpunk on one of the horns. It was also an entertaining show.

And just to show how young I really am, I’ll throw in The Brave Little Toaster, because even if it is a movie, it’s still a cartoon. Used to watch it every time I went to my grandpa’s house.

  87. Alison November 20, 2008 at 4:16 pm #

    Rainbow Brite and The Smurfs
