Your Song

Last week as part of our Dream Job series at Cross Point I took a shot at being a singer/song writer. I do live in Nashville you know.

[vimeo http://www.vimeo.com/2206473]

I believe every person has at least one song in them. Here’s todays all skate question: What genre of music would your one song be and why? Rock… Country… Jazz… Classical… Polka…

For extra credit you could give us the title.

Old-School R&B- They told a story in a way that today’s songwriters can’t always do. You felt the music, the vocals, the story…

  2. SHerri November 12, 2008 at 7:36 am #

My friends would probably describe my best song style as rap, because I use a lot of words, rather quickly, ALWAYS have a story to tell and paint a rather vivid description.

I would say, probably country because I’m pretty easy to read, tell it like it is, simple, may say the same thing over and over,
my stories are pretty crazy at times and I have a raspy southernish drawl.

  3. Kayla November 12, 2008 at 8:19 am #

My song would probably be something acoustic…I love the sound of acoustic playing along to a low voice! Sounds REAL. Nothing disguising the voices or anything. Just straight voices.

  4. SHerri November 12, 2008 at 8:26 am #

If I chose to perform a rap song, title would be “Lilly white Momma gonna bring you down!”

The country version title would be “Look at my husband again I gonna jump on you like a spider monkey!”

(For the record, I’m 5’1 1/2″ ANd yes, the 1/2″ makes ALL the difference!

  5. Pete November 12, 2008 at 8:37 am #

@sherri, I’m going to make sure I stay out of your way. :)

  6. brewster November 12, 2008 at 8:46 am #

as long as it is a good song, that is all that matters, i can figure the style out later. :)

cool video, i laughed. keith urban…

  7. bradruggles November 12, 2008 at 8:58 am #

    Dude, that song was awesome.

I’ll be waiting for the music video.

  8. janowen November 12, 2008 at 9:00 am #

well, i’ve written a few songs. I don’t call myself a songwriter, I call what I do “musical journaling” – I write as I pray. So, as a result most of what I write is very soulful and prayerful. I would like to write something more upbeat. Maybe I’m writing what is just inside me. I don’t know!

  9. janowen November 12, 2008 at 9:07 am #

i commented first then watched the video…this is why i don’t share my stuff with many people…… haha Great job by your video people! Be thankful you work with such talent.

  10. Tommy Sircy November 12, 2008 at 9:14 am #

I know it will come as shock given my suave and debonair exterior, but mine would be country.

  11. Jan Connair November 12, 2008 at 9:20 am #

I would love to be able to do acapella choral singing like these guys:

    http://janconnair.wordpress.com/2007/08/17/293/

  12. Sarah S November 12, 2008 at 9:32 am #

Mine would be an oldies song: Something preferably by Sam Cooke!!

  13. Linnae Hoppe November 12, 2008 at 9:36 am #

Mine would be an Indie/Folk song for sure! A mixture between Patty Griffin/Rosie Thomas/Mindy Smith

  14. youthpastoradam November 12, 2008 at 10:11 am #

Mine would be a southern rock song. Kind of an Allman Brotherers/Creedence Clearwater Revival sound

  15. bustersdaughter November 12, 2008 at 10:22 am #

The way I’ve been feeling these past two weeks, it would be definately the “blues”

I think your song could have been called “The Breaks”…lunch, coffee, etc.
but it was an interesting song.

  16. Joseph November 12, 2008 at 10:34 am #

I lean to Rock but love all music.

If I had a song it would be titled “You only get one turn on the earth bike so ride ride ride”

  17. Pete Wilson November 12, 2008 at 10:46 am #

@Joseph, I’m digging it dude. I’ve go the melody in my head right now!

  18. Harold November 12, 2008 at 10:48 am #

You know it would depend on the mood I was in some days jazz, some days rock but today I would be singing the blues.

  19. godzgaljen November 12, 2008 at 11:19 am #

    I love your song Pete!

Girl rock…like the group Heart did but with Christian lyrics.

    I’d call it…”Full Surrender”

  20. Brian Becker November 12, 2008 at 11:28 am #

Well, I consider myself a gangster, but my wife thinks I sing every song with a country twang…so maybe my Genre would be a mix called C-rap…oops.

    Title: Combine’n Low-Ridin

(Those pea combines I drove for awhile could really use some cooler rims out there in the pea fields of Southeastern Washington!)

  21. debbieinnashville November 12, 2008 at 11:31 am #

Since I grew up on country music (I was country when country wasn’t cool!) I would have to say country even though all I listen to right now is Christian music. I have actually written two songs called:

    If You Only Knew
    Many Miles

  22. Daniel Hall November 12, 2008 at 11:54 am #

Chad Cates! Haha… that guy used to lead worship for my youth group summer camp!

You should ask him to play you “The Movie Song” (it was my Freshman year girlfriend and my song!)

I would do rock. Title: The Face Melting Chronicles

  23. Ollie November 12, 2008 at 12:22 pm #

i would have a rock song, because i’m continually “banging” my head on stuff. i think i’d call it…..”ouch, i banged my head on something.”

  24. Pete Wilson November 12, 2008 at 12:42 pm #

@Daniel Hall, What are the chances of that? Hilarious!

  25. Marlen November 12, 2008 at 12:53 pm #

I am not sure, since I consider myself a little bit country and a little bit rock n’ roll…lol

  26. Giant Idiot November 12, 2008 at 1:25 pm #

Mine would be a sweeping movie score.

  27. Ron aka mindpunch November 12, 2008 at 1:33 pm #

mine would be a pop/rock song that promotes a movie and probably would feature a rapper of some sort… probably Vanilla Ice or Rev Run. It would BLOW UP YO!!!

  28. Kelli November 12, 2008 at 1:50 pm #

Inspirational. It crosses all genres but the message is one that encourages and might even leave you breathless or sobbing uncontrollably. Examples: I Believe I can Fly, One Moment in Time, My Heart Will Go on. It would definitely be sappy. : )

  29. sara November 12, 2008 at 2:19 pm #

Pete, you may be able to win a grammy with a best comedy album. That was FUNNY. If you can’t make one dream come true, you just gotta come at it from another angle!

My heart’s with jazz… but I really love singing anything. But with jazz you can make it a little bluesy or go sassy with it. My title? “Another Lifetime, Maybe”

  30. Rob November 12, 2008 at 2:32 pm #

    worship!!!! for sure!

  31. Patty Dolan Tervo November 12, 2008 at 2:53 pm #

    Country! Life’s Blessings!

  32. Pete Wilson November 12, 2008 at 3:10 pm #

@Sara, Thanks! We had a lot of fun with this video.

  33. Amy November 12, 2008 at 3:25 pm #

I think it would depend on my mood. I’m not sure. Right now I”m trying to figure stuff out so I guess my genre would be inspirational. I’m not sure of the title.

  34. andi November 12, 2008 at 3:49 pm #

It would have to be rock – Audio Adrenaline style….
Title would be “My Staff” as in my Moses staff carved with all of my big God moments.

  35. tonyyork November 12, 2008 at 3:57 pm #

    Style:Delta Blues
Title: You know you’re low when mud is your sky

  36. Adam Herod November 12, 2008 at 4:47 pm #

That was too much fun Pete. I don’t know how you can call that song anything other than 5’2″ :-)

  37. Jen November 12, 2008 at 5:24 pm #

Made me SMILE! Always fun reading your blog. I like contemporary Christian. Title: All you need is love. Wait isn’t that one already taken? Jen from Cali

  38. Crystal Renaud November 12, 2008 at 5:25 pm #

dang, the animation on they did on anne’s design is sweet!

i really really really wish i could sing like Reba. i want to get on a stage and just go crazy on any one of her songs.

  39. tam November 12, 2008 at 5:39 pm #

    i just couldnt connect
    even though i tried
    i listened over and over
    and now…im fried

    it could be due to
    me being 5′ 8″
    so with you shorties
    i just cant relate

    but your hair looked GREAT!!!

  40. Pete Wilson November 12, 2008 at 6:08 pm #

@crystal, if you ever do that will you please, please, please, get it on video and post it on your blog!

  41. Nate VZ November 12, 2008 at 8:02 pm #

For me, I think it would be gangster rap. It just fits my persona. Probably classic NWA, from my high school days.

  42. holly November 12, 2008 at 9:33 pm #

I’m with Crystal – Close your ears if you are around me when “Fancy” by Reba comes on – I become her!!

However, my song would have to be some sort of Broadway Show Tune – numerous times throughout the day I’d love to break out into song, unfortunately, I can’t sing…except alone with my Ipod – again, close your ears!

  43. krista November 12, 2008 at 9:53 pm #

probably country because they can be tongue-in-cheek or dead serious and still have the best harmonies.

  44. Paula November 12, 2008 at 10:08 pm #

Seth needs to record it so we can all download through iTunes.

  45. Michael Robison November 13, 2008 at 2:49 am #

I guess mine would be something folk like James Taylor. Simple, but compelling. The title would be “Passionate”. Why? Because my life’s goal is to simply live passionately for God’s call in my life. I am in my dream job, in fulfilling my call. Just not the desired circumstance/location. But, God works that out as long as I am faithful to His call on me! Thanks for inspiring us to look closely…..

  46. RazzleDazzle November 13, 2008 at 12:34 pm #

No thinking required. A trio with myself, Tina Turner (provided that I had her legs), and Kid Rock would be ‘da bomb! It would be a sound mixture of Proud Mary and All Summer Long titled, “Proud Alabama.” And were rollin’…. rollin’…. rollin’ into Atlanta.

  47. nigel November 13, 2008 at 2:27 pm #

@RazzleDazzle- Kid Rock? Tina Turner I can’t complain with, but Kid Rock? Tex Ritter was better than him, and he sang hillbilly country/western.

As for songwriting, I’d do classic rock, in the style of either the Doobie Brothers or Bob Seger.

  48. Cheri Pryor November 15, 2008 at 11:48 pm #

I’m pretty sure any song I have in me would end up being sung by the Wiggles or Barney….and my children are almost grown. ’nuff said.
