Time To Move On | WithoutWax.tv by Pete Wilson

Time To Move On

Today is a new day. It’s a new era. Regardless of who you voted for or why, it’s time to switch gears. It’s time to pray for Obama as he transitions to become the President of the United States.

And furthermore, you need to know this is not a surprise to God. Before the billions of dollars were spent on this campaign, God already knew the outcome. He wasn’t sitting around the television last night ringing his hands like you were.

He doesn’t need a Republican or a Democrat, an electoral vote, or a state. He’s not red or blue. He’s God.

He’s God and I’m not. You’re Not. Obama is not. McCain is not.

So if your candidate lost. I’m sorry. If you’re worried your issues aren’t going to be being addressed. I’m sorry. But God is still God and He’s still sitting on His throne.

Let’s move on.

    Amen and Amen.

I think you are right my friend… It’s like a heavyweight fight, a big-time sports rivalry… you talk smack, you battle hard, you leave it on the field and afterwards you shake hands or pat them one another on the butt (flat hand, never cuffed :-) ) Then you get ready for a new battle, the next battle!

Today, I posted a “Time To Move On” kinda post entitled “We Have A Black President!”

@Scott Williams, just read your post and love it. Great job.

I agree Pete, however, it may take me a few days to let it sink in. I’ll admit that the outcome was not what I had prayed for, but knowing that God has a plan in what I consider a big-time letdown, I’m anxious to move on. I’ve let this race consume too much of my time, thoughts, and conversations.

i get a pit in my stomach every time i think about how much money was spent on the presidential campaigns. my feelings have nothing to do with the candidates; they have even less to do with the outcome of the election. it just grieves me to think we “blew” a small nation’s budget in the process of it all.

maybe i’m just jealous that i can’t fundraise for our ministry as well as obama did for his campaign.

  6. ransom33 November 5, 2008 at 7:37 am #

    Pete: Amen and Amen again.

Alece: You are so right! The world is upside down.

Let’s pray that God removes the blinders off the world’s leaders and gives them the grace to see the world through His eyes.

  9. SHerri November 5, 2008 at 7:50 am #

Not the first time I’ve been disappointed…won’t be the last.

I have a “system” I use when I feel a major let down when I had hoped for something that didn’t come to be, especially when the outcome to me is kinda’ “scary”.

I always ramble at first. (My poor husband). I vent, talking out my fears, worst case scenarios, how this will affect me and those I love.

Then I’ll write about my feelings. As I’m writing, I start getting insight and I usually feel the current changing. The waters settling a bit.

Then, when I read what I write, I put it into a form of a prayer/petition to God.

SOmehow, what began as a HUGE obstacle, or overwhelming fear or huge disapointment, suddenly doesn’t seem so negative when I envision
God at the helm, charting the course.

LAst night, my waters were unsettled.
This morning, already,I feel like I’m in the ARK!

I personally believe this time, after 8 years, we got it right. I think Obama can and will “reach across the aisle” and help UNITE our nation to work together for the common good — not the good and to benefit a few. That’s what it’s all about for me — to be once again the UNITED STATES of America.

  13. holly November 5, 2008 at 8:10 am #

Well said, Pete! I fully intend to support our new President and will relish the historical significance of it all. However, I also plan to actively petition our government and my legislature to make my voice heard. Just because I support and pray does not mean that I agree – let’s not lose sight of the “changes” that he proposed – I pray, that he is true to his word about “reaching across the aisle” and being “bi-partisan” – non-partisan would be even better!
    God bless America!

  14. Faye November 5, 2008 at 8:18 am #

I’m with Sherri, processing. Sometimes I’m envious of men — they can let go so much easier than many of us women can! Guys can be in a knock-down drag-out fight one minute, and going for lunch together the next — we women hang on to the fight — often for far too long. I’m in the mode of doing what I know, not what I feel. I’ve learned it’s much better that way, because my feelings so very often get me in trouble.
My days still consist of serving the One True God — doesn’t change. My passion is still seeing those who are far from Him finally SEE Him and run to Him. I will joy in those and trust the One Who is in charge.

  15. bluegoose November 5, 2008 at 8:21 am #

Yes, now is when we have to live our Christian faith and follow God’s ways to the best of our ability. For me, that means I have to ‘support the President’ because it is easy to support the troops but harder to stand behind a man I don’t agree with!
Ahhh, military perspective changes a lot of things!

  16. Andy Depuy November 5, 2008 at 8:25 am #

    Pete
I agree with you 100% God is in control and we need to move on

  19. lori November 5, 2008 at 8:33 am #

I had to remind myself of that last night as I was watching the returns. God is in control, He knew what would happen, and we need to continue to trust in Him. Thank you for that gentle reminder this morning, as I do sit and worry about the issues that are dear to me. God knows what He is doing, and I am not going to question His judgment. I will pray for this leader as I have prayed for past leaders.

I’m going back to my blog and re-think my last post….

  20. janowen November 5, 2008 at 8:40 am #

I think sometimes we trust in being American more than in God. This is a good time for Christians to put their faith into action and pray and act Christlike. As you say, a man will not save us. Our city will no doubt be greatly impacted if there are military cuts (Huntsville, Al) and my husband’s job is included in that. But we are in GODS hands and so I am peaceful this morning.

  21. youthpastoradam November 5, 2008 at 8:44 am #

Well said! I’m actually just glad it’s all over now. Now we can pray for Obama, our nation, and revival to come to everyone.

    Amen.

And instead of, “I don’t support our President….but I support our troops.”

Maybe we should try, “I trust God in this. Not my will but his be done”

    Come together, people.

  32. Rob November 5, 2008 at 9:25 am #

Amen…God Bless our new president and God bless America!

  33. Carmen November 5, 2008 at 9:26 am #

Pete – You’re right! I was disappointed last night, but God’s mercies are new every morning. I awoke with a sense of peace. And purpose. This can be a wake up call for us (the church) if we so choose. If we had been doing our job – what God called us to do as a church and as individual Christ followers, many political policies would really be insignificant. There would be no desire to “spread the wealth”. We have left a hole for someone to fill and people are now looking to the government instead of the church. Let’s change that.

I will be praying for President-Elect Obama. That God will use him in mighty ways, as only God can. God likes it that way!

  34. bustersdaughter November 5, 2008 at 9:43 am #

Spinach is good for me but I don’t have to like it..I just have to find a way to adapt it into another recipe to get the vitamins …..I hope that wasn’t a bad analogy….I’m just not ready to say I’m ready….I’m in mourning ….so give me some time I’ll go about my daily business and he will too and that will be fine. And I will pray for him…just not today.

  35. tonyyork November 5, 2008 at 9:59 am #

And Christ told His disciples that they should pray in this manner..

Our Father who art in heaven,
    Hallowed be thy name,
    Thy Kingdom come,
    Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven….

Its time to be Kingdom focused… not this kingdom in the United States but God’s kingdom. This prayer is reflection that we should be asking God on a daily basis to give us the privilege to join his Kingdom work here. That kingdom has no party lines… there are no democrats or republicans. We are ambassadors to a Kingdom that transcends all human hatreds and bigotries and countries…

Let’s do more than act like that… let’s BE that. You want to see America change – don’t do it in a vote because that is asking the government to do what you should be doing already – do it with love and compassion.

50-60 years from now, most of us will not be alive and we won’t care one jot what happened with this presidential election, however, we will be very concerned about what we did with the election of Christ in our lives.

As I write this I am convicted on the major point that I base my vote on. I will always cast my vote for the candidate that respects the sanctity of the life that resides in a mother’s womb. I cast that vote hoping that in some way they will have an impact to turn around the travesty that is legalized abortion. Here is the thing that I am convicted on… that is the ‘easy’ way out.. I want the government to do what I should be already doing – affecting change. I have never visited a family planning clinic or talked to a young mother who is trying to make a decision about abortion. I haven’t tried to raise issues to make adoption easier so that abortion wouldn’t be the only ‘convenient’ option for a person stuck in that hard decision. In short – I haven’t tried in any manner to bring God’s kingdom to an issue that I find important.

Christians – that is the reality. You want to see true and lasting change – pray to be a part of God’s kingdom work. Its not as easy as casting a vote and ‘hoping’ but it sure is more beneficial to those that God allows you to impact.

    Peace

First, that error message that came up about the server being down and it being Matt’s fault? HILARIOUS! LOL!

Second, Amen. We still live in the free-est nation in the world and we still are called to honor and respect the office of President. And as Christian parents, we must instill in our kids the respect intentionally – in this climate they won’t just “get it” by osmosis. We must choose carefully.

Awesome post. Thanks for the point in the right direction!

  37. Carmen November 5, 2008 at 10:11 am #

tonyyork – Sounds like we’re in the same place. God really convicted me of wanting the easy way out – specifically with the abortion issue. That is why I signed up for the Open House/orientation at the Hope Clinic for Women – I am going to start volunteering with them – doing whatever they need of me. I am willing to work to save one baby at a time.

For those of you in Nashville – I’m going on the 18th. Anyone want to join me?

  38. Jenn November 5, 2008 at 10:19 am #

Remember that Romans 13:1 (NIV) says, “for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” He’s in control! He knows what He’s doing!

I thank God for people like you. You inspire me.

Thank you Pete for posting this. I did not vote and got a lot of flack about it. I have my reasons but it can down to I did not care for either candidate. I believe God will lead us where we need to be. I have taken Isiah 41:10 as my new motto and giving all fears and worries to God. I posted a link to your blog from my blog to let people see this post. Thank you. That all summed up how I felt.

  42. John November 5, 2008 at 10:43 am #

I agree with Janowen that sometimes we depend on being Americans more than we depend on God. I also agree that God is in control. Our founding fathers believed that God was in control too. That’s why they included principles such as freedom of religion, speech, and the right to acquire and hold property in the Constitution. They considered life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to be rights endowed by our Creator, not granted by the State. If those rights come under attack, is it more Christian to defend them or to keep quiet? I’m just asking.

  43. anna November 5, 2008 at 10:48 am #

    amen! preeeeeach!

  44. patrowland November 5, 2008 at 10:49 am #

From the looks of things last night on TV an awful lot of people think Obama is God! In Pete Wilso speak… Dag Gum there were a lot of people out there!

  45. bradruggles November 5, 2008 at 11:03 am #

Seriously Pete? You say Dag Gum?

I found a great quote on Brent’s site that I wish every Christian can embrace:

Confirm it in your heart and soul that the day after the election, God is still on His throne, and Jesus is still at His right hand. Certain things are not on the ballot, and the sovereignty of God is not.

When Christians react to elections with despair and panic, they are demonstrating that their faith is in the wrong place. If the election goes badly, do not soak your hair with lighter fluid, set it off, and then run in tight, little circles. Be a Christian. If the election goes well, do not act like you have just been saved. Salvation is not something that Caesar holds in his hand, whether to give or withhold.

I wonder what the news channels will report on now???? They are probably all in serious withdrawl.
It all comes down to this.

    While I admire Barack Obama,

    I voted for McCain/Palin,

    I love my Country,

But I serve the King of Kings…and HE is not surprised by any of this!!!!

I was pretty much in mourning last night, but this morning I found myself on my knees and sooooo HUNGRY for the Lord. He reminded me that’s where I need to ALWAYS be – on my knees – regardless of the wacked-out world that tries to consume all of us. I’m also enjoying the peace & quiet of having the television OFF. It’s amazing how much better we can hear from God when He’s not having to compete with FOX News, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, NBC and all the others. Can I have an amen brothers & sisters?!

Also, just because I support Obama I do not think that Obama is God. Obama is a Godly man and most people would know this if they took the time to read any of his books or articles written about his faith (or the fact that he says it all the time).

I am proud of Obama, but I know my faith is in a true Savior Jesus Christ!!!!

I have to give our country credit for actually voting in a pres who’s not a WASP. We’ve come a long, long way. For all those who are freaking out about a liberal taking over, just know that it takes a long time to swing the pendullum the other way. Morally, I felt compelled to vote for McCain. Secretly, I’m excited about seeing things done differently for a while. Not like the old repubies haven’t had their fair shot over the last 8 years. Plus, God’s in control so in the grand scheme it’s not as big a deal who’s sitting in the oval office as we may think it is.

  58. kc November 5, 2008 at 11:34 am #

Yes! I and love your tweet you sent about the 4 commitments from Michael Hyatt’s blog regarding Obama.

    http://www.michaelhyatt.com/fromwhereisit/2008/11/my-four-commitm.html#more

    1. I will pray for him and our country.
    2. I will assume his motives are good, giving him the benefit of the doubt.
    3. I will not speak ill of him, even if I don’t always agree with him.
    4. I will cast off the spirit of cynicism, and be a positive force for good.

    Amen Pete!!!! I wholeheartedly agree!

  61. Iris November 5, 2008 at 12:14 pm #

I voted for McCain and am proud that I did. But in the last 48 hours or so I have found that my faith in God is stronger and that my personal relationship with him is already growing by leaps and bounds. Having Pres. Obama is exactly what I needed to wake me up, to stop living like the rest of this world, I claim I am a Christian but I act just like non-Christians who are conformed of this world. I prayed real hard that God wouldn’t allow an Obama presidency, but I also know that even though he didn’t answer the way I wanted him to, I think we will see lost souls come to Christ as a result of this election and isn’t that our whole purpose on this earth? To win lost souls for Christ. Praise God that he is still on the THRONE!! Thank you Pete for letting us all share our opinions, and our hearts.

  62. Amanda November 5, 2008 at 12:25 pm #

Pete- I have a prayer request for a dear blog friend of mine, Angie at keep Believing (http://aboneill.blogspot.com/) is losing her husband to cancer as we speak… its nearing the end. I am asking for an outpouring of prayer over her and her family, for peace and comfort in the this time. If you could spread the word, that would be Awesome. Thank you!

What a beautiful morning… this is a moment we all have to enjoy, the deep pain in our hearts for all the mistakes of the past, but joy, immense joy for the love and goodness and wisdom and hope for a better us, for a better world. Not forgetting that there is still evil out there but we have to work hard, do as much as we can to overcome it.

*This morning, Nov 5th, Russia didn’t lose any time to threaten again to move missiles to near Poland to neutralize the US anti-missile system.
*The Chinese have been subsidizing the American way of life.. On September 30 2008, the total U.S. federal debt passed the $10 trillion mark for the first time.
The Chinese Central Bank has invested over USD $1 trillion on U.S. Treasury bills, bonds and debt securities. Among the one trillion dollar bill, $376.3 billion have been put into the mortgage backed securities of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which constitutes 21% of the Chinese government foreign currency reserve.
*Some entrenched pockets of racism remain between us. And even many who don’t consider themselves racist…? … every time Governor Palin said that Obama “pals around with terrorists” or refered to “real Americans,” she was inviting people to use these sentiments as an excuse to despise Obama. She was saying “go ahead, create propaganda, it’s ok.” And that is the key to using racism. By blinding voters who are susceptible to it with broad smears about Obama, the McCain campaign was killing two birds with one stone. First, it was shifting the focus away from the issues that matter to people, and second (and most dangerous), by feeding on fears and ignorance, it was fostering a climate of hate and intolerance. The campaign has been costly in terms of McCain’s reputation.
But as soon as John McCain realized he was not going to win, and he conceded, his soul was freed from being sold as it was during the campaign. It’s a shame more of the race couldn’t have been run like his Concession speech.

And now it’s time move on.

God speed Barack Obama and us on our journey!

Man, did you ever say it and say it well! I posted your post on my blog … hope that was ok (I did site it, not in APA or MLA … forgive me?) and many people have called or emailed that your words touched them just like they did me. Thank you for the reminder. What an awesome God we serve!

  74. sara November 5, 2008 at 1:53 pm #

Agree wholeheartedly. I wrote my post for today yesterday afternoon before the polls closed… because what we do next has nothing to do with which one won. We pray for the President, for the people who have his ear… we volunteer, help our neighbor, be a mentor, make a difference. The President is our leader but WE are the nation… we are the ones who can turn to our neighbor and help each other. I’m just glad the fighting is over so we can all focus on what we are called to do to make a difference. God isn’t surprised and He hasn’t changed His mind on what I am called to do because a new President has been elected. Today is the day to start.

  75. HisLifeformine November 5, 2008 at 1:54 pm #

    Amen!

  76. Fran November 5, 2008 at 2:12 pm #

My older boys were a little worried about the outcome of the election and I reassured us all that God is not sitting up there worried about the outcome. I needed to remind myself of that.

Moving on too. Praying for our president elect and may the body of Christ rise up and show the love of Him to all.

  77. ncarnes November 5, 2008 at 2:14 pm #

That’s definitely the key…knowing that God is wiser than we are and he totally knows what he is doing! Its hard to always grasp, but it doesn’t make it any less true. When things do not go our way, those are the times that these truths become the most important in our lives. God’s ways are not our ways…God is God.

Daniel 4:17 has been my favorite verse lately:

“…the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of men.”

  78. Tracey November 5, 2008 at 2:38 pm #

Amen to this post Pete!! When I went on facebook this morning all I saw was complaint after complaint about what our country would become from my friends but no one accepting what our country and our Lord had led us to. Then later I signed back on and my friend Sara made me smile when she put that she had accepted it and would “pray very hard for all of us”. Acceptance that our Lord can lead us right……………that’s the best!!

  79. Jim A November 5, 2008 at 2:51 pm #

Wow, I must say that you are all taking this a lot better than I am. To me, the whole “Oh well, God is in control” does not absolve us of our responsibility to stand up for what is right. As the English philosopher Edmund Burke once said, “the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”. God may be in control, but I am still not going to try to drive home from work today with my eyes closed.

While I am happy to see that my country has grown to the point where we can elect an African American to the presidency, the fact remains that those in power now believe that we as Americans have given them a mandate to take a huge step to the left. .This will inevitably lead to erosion of religious liberty. I in no way think that we should be beating the left over the head with the Bible, but we do need to stand up as one and say in love that we will do everything in our power to resist their attempts to move this nation away from it’s biblical roots. I for one do not want to have to explain to my grandchildren someday why on this day in history, when America took a huge step to the left, I stood by and did nothing.

Look at the example in the Old Testament. Israel was led by judges, but the people wanted a king so they could be like everyone else. God stepped in and said ‘If that’s what you want, then here you go”. God’s will still prevailed in the end, but the people suffered unnecessarily because they refused to ignore what everyone else was doing and follow God’s plan. God is in control, but he expects us to join him by standing up for what is right. We fail our responsibilities as Christians when we burry our heads in the sand and simply say that we do not have to get involved because God has it covered. If we do so, we like the Israelites will soon find out what happens when God allows us a taste of what we failed to fight against.

I will most certainly pray for Obama and our leaders in congress, but the reality of the situation is that with the Democratic gains in both houses, many of the things that we as Christians need to support in our society are going to be under direct attack. We must resist the urge to take the easy road and simply stand back and wait for events to take their course because “God is in control”. God works his will through his people, and his people need to be willing to stand up and do the work he calls them to. The key is to do it in a way reflects God’s love, not just his judgment. Sadly, this is the part that we so often mess up.

I agree, it’s “time to move on.” So, now who did you vote for, Pete? Come on, where’s the transparency, bro? Just kidding!

I hope to see Barrack Obama be sworn in on the Holy Bible in January and may God be with him on this historical moment in our country’s history.

  81. jodyduncan November 5, 2008 at 3:00 pm #

Awesome point Jim A., but remember a good portion of these Christian readers probably voted for Obama because they believe he is the right man for the job. Pro choice or not!

  82. amy November 5, 2008 at 3:01 pm #

I know this has already been said but amen. I think its time to move on. We need to accept the outcome and trust god. For he knows what he’s doing even if I sometimes question him.

I am in somewhat of a grief for our country. I know God is in control, but that does not mean America will always prosper. Are we ready to defend the faith in a way we have never been asked to defend it before? Are we ready to take such a stand in a nation where religious freedoms keep being taken away. Yes, God is in control, but that does not always mean that we are going to be confortable in America. Be ready to be tested!

  84. Abs November 5, 2008 at 3:33 pm #

I completely agree with you – I was so torn about this election but I know that my responsibility now is to pray diligently for our president and cover him with the grace and mercy of our God. There are so many important issues facing our nation right now so I will do my part and support the man that God allowed to be elected to this office.

So right.. I wrote today on my blog that our work here on earth should not change–we should still be building God’s kingdom and being “salt and light.” We should remember that we are Christians first before we are Americans, we are Christians first before we are Republicans or Democrats, we are followers of Christ before we are followers of McCain and Obama. I totally agree, it is time to move on.. we will be okay!

  91. Skippy November 5, 2008 at 9:44 pm #

To Iris and Jim A -

You both sound completely ridiculous! And Jim, what you said about the “triumph of evil” – isn’t that being judgmental? Christians are not supposed to judge, and that is EXACTLY what you did. How you can figure that a man who passed up a high-paying law job for a chance to help his fellow men & women in south Chicago is “evil” is beyond me. Barack Obama is EXACTLY what this country needs – someone honest, hard-working, and someone who truly cares about ALL people – not just ones who support his agenda. But I suppose you’re still ignorant enough to believe that he’s a Muslim terrorist, huh?

Barack Obama has been a Christian for over 20 years, but I guess he’s just not “Christian enough” for some of you people. It’s attitudes like many of yours that stopped me from going to Church of Christ. Now I see that many of you are just like them. If it doesn’t fit into your perfect little box of what you believe is 100% right, then it must be “evil.” I’m glad I’m not that naive.

    Pete, some thoughts:

    1) We live in a wonderful country. I was pleased to see so many citizens exercise a right that many have perished to obtain.
    2) I am thrilled that American citizens have elected a black man to the highest office in the land. I just wish he were a conservative black man. While I strongly differ with his ideology and legislative record, I appreciate this moment in our nation’s history. My hope is that we will now enter a post-race America…where we actually judge people on the content of their character.
    3) I think it is fair to say that “campaign finance reform” just left the building. The McCain-Feingold legislation (which is typically a liberal ideal) was, ironically, followed only by the conservative candidate…and he paid for it dearly. I personally believe a candidate’s ability to raise money is a good thing…as an extension of free speech. Obama did it better than anyone in American history. While I agree that they spend a lot on the campaigns, it is comparatively not that much. George Will makes an excellent point: American’s spend more on potato chips annually than the combined cost of the campaigns. So, you won’t see a presidential candidate taking the Public Financing option again.
    4) The Republican Party took one on the chin for the second time in 2 years. Why? Because they lost touch with their conservative roots. They got hooked on OPM (other people’s money). They grew the federal government by 40% in 8 years which makes me vomit (part of that was the unforseen need for a Dept of Homeland Security, which is partially excusable). They also created an atmosphere of “anti-intellectual” conservatism. This is a mistake. William F. Buckley provided a well-read, intellectual voice to the conservative movement, which lead to the Reagan era. “Joe Six Pack” may be a wonderful person, but he shouldn’t shape the ideology of modern conservative thought. The Republicans will regroup, just like the Democrats did, and a leader will emerge. My early prediction is a young Wisconsin Republican Congressman, Paul Ryan.
    5) I am ashamed at how much I have come to enjoy following politics. I found myself flipping the channel away from a football game to catch the latest political update…something I could have never, ever predicted.

  99. Jim A November 6, 2008 at 8:45 am #

    Skippy,

There was no personal attack on Obama in my post. My concern is less with Obama and more with the fact that the leaders of congress now believe that they have a mandate from the American people to take this country on a sharp turn to the left. They have been very open about this in the interviews they have given in the last 24 hours. If you do not believe that a shift to the political left in this country will have a negative impact on issues that Christians should care deeply about, then I can understand why you would not be concerned. My belief however, based on everything I have observed in recent history in this country, is that when we move to the left, Christian values tend to come under direct attack. Reality is that there are those out there that would love to be able to silence the church and ban it from the public square. If you listen to what those folks are saying on the air or posting in blogs, you plainly see that they believe that this election represents a clear victory for their side. I am curious to know why if those that oppose the church see this event in our history as a clear victory for their side, you think I sound ridiculous for seeing it as an area of grave concern for religious liberty.

By the way, with respect to my being “judgmental” of Obama, apparently you misunderstand my concern with his election over McCain. My concern has little to do with Obama as a man. It has far more to do with the fact that we now have lost the “check and balance” protection that someone like McCain would have brought to the Whitehouse at a time when congress is skewed very far to the left.

Maybe you are right and I am concerned about nothing. History tells me however, that from a religious liberty perspective, I do have reason to be concerned. History also unfortunately tells me that if I am right and Christian values do come under attack, the church in America will for the most part stand idly by and not speak out. Too many of us are afraid that someone will think we sound “ridiculous”.

Pete. I agree that we must go forward. We must pray for our new president and respect the authority due to him under God’s order of governance in this world. At the same time, we should remember our true citizenship – the kingdom of God whether while in this world or later in heaven. There are times when the agendas of the two conflict. Without going into details, I have heard undertones, subtext, and symbolism from the new administration that is deeply concerning. Move on. Yes. But let’s be aware of the world in which we live. Let’s be innocent as doves, yet wise as foxes. There may come a time when we cannot be in unity with all men. If we see that time come, let’s remember that Jesus Christ is the only one who will ever bring lasting unity – and our citizenship in the kingdom comees only through His name – Jesus Christ to the glory of God the Father.

  105. Daniel November 7, 2008 at 12:51 am #

Id like to pipe in on this blog – we need to remember as Christ’s Body (THE CHURCH) we are to be in this world and not of this world- our KING is JESUS CHRIST and HIM alone – it does not matter who the President is really -what matters is our faith – what matters is eternal not temporal – this world is passing away – America and the world is focued on problems that are earthly in nature – What does it profit to gain the whole world but lose your soul? I believe Preident Bush was so unpopular because he is a believer in JESUS CHRIST and those who opppose JESUS oppose those who follow Him. I agree now that we know who got elected -we need to pray – I pray for Obama that he would hear the voice of GOD and obey – our Nation needs GOD now like no other time in our History – We are towing the line between turning our back on GOD and running back to HIM – God bless America – the home of the Brave and the Free!!!!!!!

  106. RC November 7, 2008 at 2:42 pm #

It’s so interesting that folks from both sides were convinced that their candidate was sent from God and that the other was the Anti-Christ. That was a pretty equal point of view of many, much in the same way religions look at their own particular religion.
God be praised though that Obama is in (my point of view)
The feeling of hope is in the air for many across the globe. Many countries are already having a bit more respect for America again. Believe me, I am a world traveler and there are some countries I go to where I say I’m from Canada. I don’t believe this will happen as much now.
People need hope and an icon and something to believe in. NO, Obama is not Jesus, but much in the same way that Kennedy or Martin Luther King Jr. symbolized hope and change, Obama embodies that as well. Jesus, of course, was a symbol of this as well.
Let us pray that there was be another paradigm shift and he won’t go the same way all the other great men have gone and that he’ll stay alive to lead. There is an awakening that is happening world wide right now. Just look at the amount of people who showed up to vote.
This person in the above comment is dense. Bush was not unpopular because he was a follower of Christ! That is ignorance.

Let us expand our view a bit here shall we?
Speaking in relation to Pete’s view above that God already knows the outcome and is aware and not surprised by any of this, It brings to mind some of the literature I saw floating around pre-election comparing McCain and Obama’s views from the perspective of ‘Christians’. In regards to religion, it had McCain quoted as saying, “America is a Christian nation!” and Obama quoted as saying, “This is not only a Christian nation, but also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, etc. It’s all about Unity” (as IF this was supposed to be a negative statement!!!!) Did Christ not teach Unity and say God is One?
This was furthered by MORE propaganda on this same subject sent to me by other ‘Christians’ using Obama’s views on Unity and comparing them to Hitler and a One World government.
Interfaith work….aka…religious tolerance (I personally despise the word tolerance and believe it should just be ‘religious understanding’ where we meet and pray and praise with our fellow man (or woman) from all the religion and share practices and traditions) is really the only way we’re going to come together as a race and truly LIVE the teachings of Christ and ‘Love One another.’
Barack Obama represents this at this moment in history and for that we should be thankful truly to God, the One Being.

  107. RC Cont. November 7, 2008 at 2:46 pm #

Unity is unity. Maybe we should all make bumper stickers that say ‘We are all One….except for YOU!” What Joel said above about unity is a HUGE part of the problem!
There is no separation in unity and if you put that exclusively and a one way pass for the ‘Christians only Club’ and oust any other religions, you’re missing the point of Jesus’ essential teachings. How can you not get this one simple idea?

  108. Sue November 9, 2008 at 1:58 am #

It’s funny how the democrats are all saying I’m sorry your candidate lost but it’s time for everyone to unite & support Obama. These are the very same people that bad-mouthed Bush for the last 8 years & criticized every move he made. Maybe you should have taken your own advice during the Bush Administration. You hypocrites make me wanna PUKE.

  109. Sunni November 10, 2008 at 10:01 am #

I’m with Cokie Roberts in longing for a return to the time when partisanship didn’t mean enmity among people, and I would add, among people of God. The politically oriented status updates on Facebook, especially those whom I know to be people of faith, stuck in my craw. I am thrilled with the outcome of the election, although I really identify more with the Republican party as it USED to be before it was taken over by certain Religious Conservatives. Christians that are one-issue voters make me ill. And the Christians that are so concerned about their taxes going up are forgetting that God compels us to help those that are in reduced circumstances and guess what? It doesn’t matter to Him how they got there. His grace is sufficient for them just like it’s sufficient for me. The immigration issues in my state of TX are considerable, but last time I checked it says “Give me your poor, your downtrodden, your huddling masses yearning to be free,” not “Give me your educated, income- earning doctors and engineers yearning for higher pay.” Just because I voted with the Democrats this election doesn’t make me less of a Christian. God is watching over this country and come January there will be two men of faith in the White House. I know it’s hard for some of you (and I say that with sympathy, not sassiness), but lots of Democrats are Christians.

I’m pretty late reading your post (which I wholeheartedly agree with, btw)….but as a Californian, by the time I got to the polls they had pretty much already named the winner. I was so disheartened (not necessarily by the winner, but by the thought it didn’t matter how I voted) that I didn’t even VOTE for a president this year.

  112. Tina Harkey November 15, 2008 at 9:08 am #

Just a question: Was this God’s choice? We have free will. The people asked for a King and they got Saul. When Eve ate the apple she basically released chaos into the world. So ultimately on Earth is God in control? Or are we? Or does God control only us? Romans 6:10 or what about Mark 3:24
If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. Luke 11:18
If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebub.
    1 Corinthians 15:24
Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.

  113. Tina Harkey November 15, 2008 at 9:25 am #

Sunni, I would prefer to give directly to the poor in my community and choose how funds are distributed – not that I have a ton to give, but when I do have extra like to make that choice myself. By giving money to our government over 50% of what is taken won’t be “redistributed”. I know many doctors that give to many different charities, write things off for their patients, find ways to help them with their meds, etc. I know business men that told me when I worked for a non-profit they would rather give their profit to my my non-profit than pay taxes on it. Our economy is failing in part because our country cannot continue to pay for the millions of illegal aliens here that are – working without paying taxes for services, getting free education & medical care (all paid for by taxes), driving without license or insurance and that force companies to post things bilingually which raise the costs of goods & services.

Our Congress (Democratic majority) has the lowest approval rating of any Congress 18% in history and yet we are blaming our President for the housing market crisis and the economy. Let’s face it. He’s a figurehead that networks and is the faceman for our government. Congress & Judges are the ones making legislation and enforcing it. We should actually be more concerned with who we elect into those positions more than the Presidential position.

God Bless America – we need it now more than ever.
