Should I Resign As Pastor?

Over the next couple weeks I get the opportunity to try out a few new jobs as part of our “Dream Job” series. Who knows, I might actually find a new job! Here’s a look at me trying to be the weatherman.

[vimeo http://www.vimeo.com/2087400]

So here’s today’s all skate question. What was the first job you ever had?

Hope you guys are having a great week so far.

Not quitting my day job,

Pete

Dallas Theological Seminary….I helped my Dad in the mail departement sending out magazines. I was chosen to fill in on the PBX (phones) and one day, I seriously answered, “Dallas Cemetery”! Thankfully, they let me keep my job!!!

Besides the obvious ones of mowing lawns and shoveling snow – my very first ‘official’ job would probably have been paper boy at the age of 12. I remember the only time my dad ever drove me on my route. The temperature was -30 F and the wind was blowing hard causing the wind chill to be -90 F. The paper gave me a Polar Bear award but I was sure thankful for my dad that morning. He would park at a corner and then I would run my papers down the block and hop in the car to warm up before doing the next block.

I was a soda jerk and a local convenience/ice cream store. No, the emphasis is not on “jerk.” :)

I got really nervous when you put on the suit and started doing the weather. Geeeeez

My first job was at the Yellow River Game Ranch feeding the animals…those poor, poor animals. I was terrified of animals and I fear most of them lost weight on my watch. Not a good fit for me.

I was a waitress at a small town restaurant.

  9. SHerri & Alan Murphy October 28, 2008 at 8:02 am #

At 13, I was the neighborhood babysitter. Loved the kids, but couldn’t stand to change a messy diaper, so when the “unthinkable” would happen, I would call my Mom and she would come to clean the mess! (God love her!)

*Ended up raising 3 stinky boys myself! HAHA!

  10. Babs October 28, 2008 at 8:06 am #

I detassled corn in the middle of a sweaty hot summer for pity pennies I’m sure. I had blisters from being sunburned. The corn stalks were so high it was suffocating. I was 15 in 1969..give or take….I was fool enough to sign up for it the following summer.
Someone finally told the truth about the info on the weather station..I loved it..but you should keep your day job.

I worked at my uncle’s sporting goods store. For years I vowed I’d never wear Nikes again and I resented all little league parents – those little trophies and jerseys are tough to make….

I worked at an outdoor roller skating rink for a summer. Did everything from skate rental, concessions, and even rink guard. Amazingly I didn’t break any bones.

My first job was at a daycare with a class full of 2 year olds. Stayed there for 3 years til I went to college. Then I got another job in my college town at a daycare with – you guessed it- 2 year olds. Wonder why there was always an opening in that department?

    Nice.

Okay, so first off, this was hysterical. Loved it. Absolutely loved it… Classic line, “Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, to be honest, we really have no clue.” AWESOME! One question though… Since when is %90 not a good chance of rain? Your seriously one funny guy.

I used to go with my dad to farms and help trim Cows hooves. Basically we gave them a pedicure. Cows who have happy feet produce more milk. Then I turned 16 and had enough of that and was a server at Perkins.

I’m not sure I like this forced flashback!

My first job was at Captain D’s. On my first day I answered the phone and it was the boss’s wife. They were having marital problems and he told me to tell her that he didn’t want to talk to her….so I told her he couldn’t come to the phone. She told me she was going to drive over there and kick my you know what. So I called my mom to come get me and I never went back. My next first job was selling sportswear at an Atheletic store. I was 15, but everyone thought I was 16.

I much prefer being a real estate broker.

Thanks for putting this video up Pete! First job – i worked at a school uniform store in memphis. that’s all i will say and trust me you do not want to know much more than that!

    Hey Pete…

Your final lines of this post in Black Color Font so they aren’t clearly seen. (I stumbled across them by seeing them sideways on my computer screen – don’t ask).

Here is what it says in black font….

“Hope you guys are having a great week so far.

    Not quitting my day job,

    Pete”

Delivered papers for the Springfield News and Sun starting in 6th grade. Woke up every morning at 5:50 to deliver my 30-35 papers. Took me about a half an hour to finish it depending on the day.

Starting when I was in 8th grade and my brother in 5th we started to alternate weeks. We continued to do this until we moved to another neighborhood in Springfield before my Junior year in High School.

Besides babysitting my first job was working at the Zilker Park Railroad. It a train that runs through Zilker Park in Austin, TX. It was fun…going to the park everyday during the summer.

I worked at tha air traffic control tower at Andrews Air Force Base where the President and the Vice President as well as other heads of states and dignitaries flew in and out of runing errands. It was a summer job that was great fun and a wonderful opportunity.

  40. Ronni October 28, 2008 at 10:24 am #

OH that was a hoot! Wilson OUT!

I was a cashier at Kmart.

  41. Sarah B October 28, 2008 at 10:25 am #

From the ages of 13-15 I was the condo complex “trashlady/pooper scooper”. One hr a day I would walk our condo’s and pick up trash, doggy doody, and clean up around the dumpsters. I was so embarrassed I would usually wake up before school to do it so no one would see me. But it was perfect because I was involved in after school sports and still got to earn some spending money.

  42. Monica Hunt October 28, 2008 at 10:32 am #

I worked at the clubhouse in our neighborhood- I was 15 I think! …I check ID’s to make sure no one snuck into the pool! Of course I started the job in the “winter” (not much of one in FL) so almost no one ever came by- it was basically being paid to do my homework!

  43. Pam October 28, 2008 at 10:32 am #

It was fun watching you do the weather… and you pull off the suit and tie really well!
My first job was a cashier in a grocery store. I remember once a guy got really ticked at me for making a mistake ringing his items… he didn’t get proper credit for his food stamps, and had zero dollars with him. Ack, the stress!

I worked at TCBY in high school. It was right next to a women’s work out gym, so all day long there were women who would go work out then come “treat” themselves to some frozen yogurt with hot chocolate and lots of other candies. This always seemed kind of funny to me.

  46. codyvilla October 28, 2008 at 10:48 am #

First job – I cleaned the meat saws at my local small town grocery/butcher store. I lost a little blood but no appendages.

  47. Alan October 28, 2008 at 10:52 am #

Measuring, cutting and hanging ceiling tile with my Dad at 7 years old when building the addition onto the Cheatham County Courthouse.

My first taxable job? Grocery bagger at Kemp’s Foodland in Ashland City. I still prefer to sack my own groceries. /wink

  48. Jennifer October 28, 2008 at 10:57 am #

I was a lifeguard, and to think I actually complained about having to sit in the sun and do nothing other than watch people swim. How lame is that?

  49. Kath October 28, 2008 at 11:12 am #

What an awesome experience to be a weatherman for a day!! I cleaned rental campers. not a bad job other than they were so hot and I got dehydrated. So then the gal had me clean her house and that was horribleness.

  50. Pete Wilson October 28, 2008 at 11:34 am #

@Ash, you got paid to keep score at a baseball game? Where do you apply? :)

  51. ncarnes October 28, 2008 at 11:38 am #

    My thoughts while watching:

    1. When he was showing you how to move your arms on the green screen, you looked like you would do really well at “Dancing with the Stars”
    2. I would rather watch a news station where the people are wearing “pastor Pete clothes” – You’ve got to keep it real, they don’t wear suits to the grocery store.
    3. I love the honesty…why can’t more weather people shoot straight? We really don’t know what’s going to happen next Monday and Tuesday!

My first job was a janitor at the church and school where my dad was the pastor. Definitely wasn’t my dream job! :)

  52. Jonathan Hopson October 28, 2008 at 11:39 am #

Taco Bell. I spent 2 years at that job.

  53. Camey October 28, 2008 at 12:13 pm #

Other than babysitting for neighbors most of the time for free.. First real job was at a bbq place here in Texas. Loved the people but hated still smelling like bbq hours after getting off work! Long hair then just like now.. lol Not an attractive smell unless one is hungry! lol

  54. tabitha October 28, 2008 at 12:15 pm #

Gift wrap. I hated Christmas for years after that job and to this day I could care less how well the gifts are wrapped. I did a good job while I was there but really…

  56. Brenda October 28, 2008 at 12:34 pm #

When I was 17, one of my high school friends family owned a janitorial business. They hired me to work part-time after school. I cleaned banks and savings and loans- vacuuming, dusting, emptying trash and cleaning bathrooms. One was called Thrifty savings. They always had tons of fast-food trash overflowing at the desk trashcans. Every night when I went in to clean, hundreds of giant black cockroaches would scatter. Needless to say, I didn’t last long at that job.

  57. Lance October 28, 2008 at 12:41 pm #

There was an earn and learn program for 13 year old kids at a summer camp. I made $2 a day to help out at a two week day camp. It was a good living at 13! That was enough to go to the movies a lot!

  58. Steve October 28, 2008 at 12:41 pm #

At 16 I worked in a vet’s office cleaning cages and washing St. Bernards in an old bathtub. Messy, stinky, tiring, with a constant overdose of love from the animals. Loved it, then majored in math.

    Gwilt out.

  59. Sally October 28, 2008 at 12:41 pm #

I was a ‘puller’ for a gun club. I pushed the button to release the clay target for practice shooting. The skeet shooters tipped waaaay better than the trap shooters!

  60. Heather October 28, 2008 at 12:43 pm #

McDonald’s on Clark Ln in Columbia, MO. I loved my job. Great memories.

PLEASE don’t joke about quitting as pastor!!! Not funny ; )

  61. sara October 28, 2008 at 12:45 pm #

I’m not going to lie… I had to rewind it to hear that guy’s story because I missed it the first time while I was laughing SO intensely at the arm/dance movements on the green screen. You were killin me! You actually did pretty darn well at the end…

Unofficial: babysitting and walking beans for my dad

Officially: Summer telemarketer that sounded something like this: “Hi, this is Sara and I’m calling about the Algona Dollar Savings Program.” I lived in a small town so I pretty much knew everyone I was calling… so embarrassing at 15.

  62. Mike in Milwaukee October 28, 2008 at 12:57 pm #

My first job: Stocking ice cream by the 12-Gallon-Pack in a -20 freezer. Nice in summer. In winter, not so much. This was when I starting thinking, “Hey, maybe my Dad’s right – try to find a way to make a living doing something you love – preferably with your brain instead of your back!” Thanks Dad!

My first job was selling the GRIT newspaper door to door. I think I could make 2 to 4 dollars a week doing that. Yeah, that wasn’t much money then either. The GRIT newspaper now seems to have become the GRIT magazine. http://www.grit.com/

    McKee Out!

I started my first job when I turned 15. I worked as a waitress at a little pizza place in town. I loved it, but it might have been because I was the only female that worked there, so I got lots of attention from the “older” boys.

    I was a cashier/bagger at a supermarket….not fun!

and, since I’m a bit stupid, what exactly does ‘all-skate’ mean?

  69. brandiandboys October 28, 2008 at 2:25 pm #

i was a waitress at a local pizza joint! i made a mean cherry coke.

  70. squincheye October 28, 2008 at 3:00 pm #

I had a summer job digging cactus. I do not recommend it as a career path.

  71. Pete Wilson October 28, 2008 at 3:03 pm #

@nigel, “all skate” is simply a reference to our days back at the skating rink. From time to time there would be a “couples skate” or “girls skate”. The “all skate” was a time for everyone to participate.

@squincheye, you really had a job just digging up cactus? Holy cow.

Whoa, for a second there, I thought you were resigning! AHHHHH…
My first job was at a grocery store in a town 7 minutes away. My dad basically got me the job, because I had no gumption to go ask for one. He knew the owner. I was a great worker though. My first day, a guy asked for change for $100, and I laughed until I realized he was serious. Then, I called for backup. Which is why I now teach children who only have to count backwards from 20! I stayed at that job for 10 years and actually worked about every dept. they had. My favorite was the meat. Working with a bunch of boys was much more fun that dealing with 16 year old girls who only cared about how their hair looked. Glad you’re not resigning, and that you’re not the weatherman!

  74. Vicki October 28, 2008 at 3:15 pm #

Being a high school senior, I got a job at the local Exxon gas station as a gas station attendant! Imagine THAT. I worked for $8/hr. pumping gas, putting air in tires, and looking under the hood to top off oil, radiator, brake, and transmission fluid. Business was booming – perhaps it was because of the oddity of seeing two blonde teenagers in an Exxon uniform, smiling and serving customers! My next job was working in a pet store – never a dull moment. Putting blood worms in baggies for fish food was not fun.

  75. Heidi October 28, 2008 at 3:30 pm #

Grunt work at the local library. :)

  76. sara October 28, 2008 at 3:50 pm #

@Harold… seriously? Oh, you should come visit Iowa … there’s a whole world of farming you need to learn about. You literally walk down every row of the bean field carrying a hoe and dig out any weeds… milkweeds, burrs, stray corn stalks. It sucks. I’m convinced my dad had six kids just to have free manual labor in the summer. :)

If you want to visit his hog buildings we could teach you how to clip tails and teeth. Oh… and the lagoon system… don’t get me started…
    :)

My first unofficial job was using an industrial ironing machine to iron patches to bobby socks. My favorite was the ladybug patch. I was paid under the table at the age of 14. My first official job was a clerk at a video store. Years later, I’m still keeping those folks in business with all the movies I watch.

  80. Roxanne Kristina October 28, 2008 at 4:04 pm #

Thanks for your courage to put yourself out there. How fun. Must have been a great day. If you want to be a weather man you should move to the Pacific Northwest. All you need to know is, “It’s going to rain.” :)

Office Manager for my cousin’s business. I was 14. Who worked in the office with me? No one. I was the best manager I ever had.

  87. Harold October 28, 2008 at 4:46 pm #

@sara, I am a country boy so I am familiar with the hogs but have never actually worked them myself.

ok I have walked beans too. I didn’t give it an official name. Now mine were garden beans and not acres of beans but my parents put out a huge garden. Actually yours truly put it out but I think they got the credit for it. Anyway, they loved KY Wonder pole beans. In between those rows of beans vining up the poles in the middle of July with a hoe in your hand is hotter than the Mojave desert.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. You can’t imagine the imagery I have conjured up.

my first job i worked 6 days a week 12 hour night shifts as a sports reporter for $16K a year. don’t worry it got me followed around walmart a lot and a personal stalker outside my apartment door. oh did i mention it was in hazard, ky. oh yes, it does exist.

  91. brunettekoala October 28, 2008 at 5:19 pm #

My first ‘proper’ job (aside from babysitting) was working in a hair and beauty salon. I washed, dryed and swept up hair. Prepared the hot wax, mixed up hair colourant, neutrilised perms, answered the phone, and found out much more information about my clients’ lives that I cared to know.

Apparently people like to share the most intimate details of their life to their hairdressers. Aged 15 that was pretty traumatic at times!! lol

  92. Adam October 28, 2008 at 5:41 pm #

finally was able to watch the video. I always wanted to be a weather guy. I thought it was the best job ever.

  93. Nate VZ October 28, 2008 at 5:58 pm #

I worked as a laborer for my dad’s carpet store, D&M Interiors, in Little Chute Wisconsin. One day, my mom picked me up to bring me to baseball practice and I said “I’m going to study very hard, because I don’t want to do this the rest of my life!” My mom loves to tell that story. I love my parents for what they have made with their lives…from the bottom up…American Dream.

I was a babysitter starting at age 11, made $2 an hour until I finished high school. My mom made me get a full-time job in an office the summer after I graduated high school. I was not happy about that at all, but the higher pay was nice!

my first leave -the-house-for-a-check job was to milk cows on a dairy farm. smelly, dirty & i got injured…so why my fascination with collecting cow stuff? i dunno

First ever job – age 14 – worked for the Youth Conservation Corp – YCC – over the summer. We replanted clear cuts, we rebuilt fences, we did trail maintenance and had environmental education – all for the US Forest Service.

TOTALLY awesome job. Next job wasn’t so cool – McDonalds -

My first job? Mowing lawns. I talked my Dad into buying a lawn mower for me It was a self-propelled (non-riding_) mower. At the time, it was state of the art.

every day i come here hoping to
    1. learn something
    2. be inspired
    3. laugh out loud.
    4. know God a little better

And sometimes like today, I get to experience every one of them.

    Thank you.

That’s really good, you would make a passable weatherman..That expression when he asked you if you want to be the weatherman was enjoyable…To me it said “No way, if I have to wear the suit” without the words.

My first official job was that of a stenographer…(boy, do I feel old).

  102. Jaime October 28, 2008 at 8:16 pm #

That video was great! I think you would be a great weatherman! I think you hit it right on with the honesty about the weather so far out in the future. :-) I’m in East Texas and, really, it’s hard to accurately predict tomorrow’s weather, let along a week from now!

I worked at Subway for my first job. I actually loved the food, but hated how I smelled when I left!

  103. Simone October 28, 2008 at 8:30 pm #

My first REAL job was as a cashier at a Bakery.

You did great! I’d love to see someone ‘hip’ up the weather!!

  104. Michael October 28, 2008 at 8:31 pm #

@kristen, thanks so much. I really appreciate your encouragement. God’s doing some fun things here.

I was 16 and a typist (yes with a real typewriter–it was a long time ago!)at a driver’s license bureau. (oh I can feel the love)
And I got fired when I opened a soda in front of my boss who was typing the paychecks (1 at a time) and the soda exploded all over her, the typewriter and the paychecks. And no…..I did not do it on purpose!!!

My first job was with T&T Lawn Service. The T&T stood for Tracey and Tim (my brother). We worked all summer and took the rest of the year off. WOW! Maybe that was my DREAM JOB!:)

  111. Cheri Pryor October 29, 2008 at 5:51 am #

Well, you sure clean up nice…but the whole “we have no idea what’s going to happen” line might get you in trouble. Don’t quit your day job. lol!

My first job was pet-sitting when I was in the 6th grade for a neighbor. The dog loved me so much after 4 days that he got out of their backyard and walked 5 blocks to my house and waited for me on the front porch all night.

  112. Cheri Pryor October 29, 2008 at 5:52 am #

    btw….was that actually aired??!! lol!!!

  113. Lisa Feather October 29, 2008 at 6:12 am #

  115. Crystal Renaud October 29, 2008 at 1:08 pm #

  116. Joseph October 29, 2008 at 2:03 pm #

First job was a stock boy at Nordstrom.

Great job on the weather…you might need to check with Joe Case for some pointers:) Only other weather/pastor person I know…

Oh, thanks for clearing up the mystery…I always knew there was no way they knew the forecast for 7 days out!

  117. Kristy - Where's My Damn Answer October 29, 2008 at 5:13 pm #

I was picking weeds out of the 5 gallon plants in my Dad’s nursery – it was WAY hot and I had to be out there ALL day picking weeds and watering. It’s a mystery why I still love plants after all that.

    Great video !!

  118. Rachel Rowell October 29, 2008 at 10:55 pm #

My first job was at Claire’s Boutique at 16, and would you believe they taught me how to pierce ears?!? Yes, they seriously put a piercing gun into the hands of a 16 year old…and there is no telling how many babies’ ears I had to do! Which they all turned out ok, but REALLY!?!
    Moms/Dads…let the pediatrician do it!
