My Life Changed Forever 15 Years Ago!

Here is my journal entry from October 15th, 1993. I was a sophomore in college.

Today was a great day for classes. My voice and diction class lasted only 30 minutes. After class Kevin and I went to the mall and had lunch at Long John Silvers.

I found out that Katy Bridges wasn’t going to Andreas’s house this weekend. Apparently her grandmother died. I’m so bummed. I was really looking forward to spending some time with her.

I was upset at first but a girl named Brandi took her place on our road trip. She was so much fun. We went to the McClean County homecoming game and then we all (me, Paul, Andrea and Brandi) went to Chi-Chi’s for dinner in Owensboro, KY.

Late that night Brandi and I went out to the dock at Laura’s house together and just talked about life. It was great! Around 1:00 a.m. it started to rain. I knew there was something different about her from the moment she got in the car with us to leave campus. We stayed up all night talking!

We looked through the Sears Catalog and picked out toys for our kids. We pretended like we had a boy who was 5, a girl 2, an she’s pregnant with another. Don’t I wish.

Oh by the way, Brandi is engaged to a very large WKU football player. This could be a problem.

Dear Brandi,

I fell hard for you 15 years ago and I haven’t stopped falling. I wouldn’t be me without you. I love you. Here’s to another 15 years of getting to know you even better.

Congrats on the 15 years of togetherness. How great to be able to look back on your thoughts from when you first met. I met my husband on vacation – I have a weeks worth of pictures and three months of nearly daily letters back and forth (he saved all but the first one). I love to look back and remember the thrill of first meeting — and the thrill is still there 21 years later.

  9. Starwoodgal October 15, 2008 at 8:20 am #

Congrats to you both! Pete – that is a very touching story.

  10. Jan Connair October 15, 2008 at 8:24 am #

    (A) You journaled when you were in college?!!! How awesome is that?
    (B) I would love it if I had written down my thoughts after my first date with my husband. We also met sophomore year of college, and I remember thinking similar thoughts about how easy he was to talk with and spend time with. In 2 weeks we are celebrating our 25th anniversary.
    (C) Good job of remembering to “say” what you know others need to hear.

And picking out toys for your pretend children in the Sears catalog?! And it wasn’t even your first date? And Brandi had a boyfriend. Hilarious.

Must be the time for love and proclaiming it. I read Brandi’s blog…Mr. 31 flavors… how nice that you both posted about this particular day in your lives.

We celebrated 30 years yesterday and I have to say that I still love that man of mine. The love is different then it was 30 years ago but like wine, it only gets better with age.

Here is to more years together for you and Brandi and many blessings.

that is just so darn sweet!

  34. Pete Wilson October 15, 2008 at 10:46 am #

    @Kristy and @ Pamela,

Well over the next few days I would discover that things were not going well between Brandi and Mr. Football. The relationship was kind of falling apart. They had been high school sweethearts. Captain of football team and the cheer leading captain.

For the record, I did not kiss her (a month later) until after she was officially broken up with Mr. Football.

For the next 3 years of college I was always watching my back. Mr Football was not real fond of me.

  35. Sally October 15, 2008 at 10:50 am #

    Congratulations Pete and Brandi!

  36. Pam Parish October 15, 2008 at 11:23 am #

That’s so sweet. And, I’m from Madisonville, Kentucky so I’ve eaten at that Chi Chi’s when I was a teen – great chimichangas! Small world. I love it that you had that journal entry to point back to the exact day you met her – what’s more romantic than that?! Congrats!

  37. jeff henderson October 15, 2008 at 11:41 am #

  41. Heather October 15, 2008 at 12:25 pm #

I know you thank God for meeting Brandi and you should! I am positive that it’s Brandi’s sense of style that you are now sporting! :)

  42. pcase October 15, 2008 at 12:50 pm #

Oh Pete – this pricked my heart. Mainly because I am deeply in love with the man of my dreams. And that grows every day. We celebrated 21 years this year and we are still discovering new things every day. With “empty nest” at our house now, even the re-discovery has been SWEET! Congrats my friend. – Pam

  49. sara October 15, 2008 at 2:01 pm #

I love it. I love that you got the girl over the captain of the football team. I love sitting on a dock talking for hours … everything is better with a lake setting. I love that you guys take the time to remember and reminisce. And I love that you have the same haircut that my nephew had when he was three.

All in all, good stuff. :)

  50. brunettekoala October 15, 2008 at 2:23 pm #

Lovin it! The last line of your journal entry made me laugh.

My middle brother had that haircut too.

    Awe, how sweet!

  52. britt October 15, 2008 at 2:37 pm #

It sounds like love at first site. I want to remind your unmarried readers that it doesn’t always happen like that. My sweet husband likes to remind me that when I first met him I told people he reminded me of Jethro from The Beverly Hillbillies. Eventually, I came to think of him looking more like Antonio Banderas. (although, I’ve always thought Jethro was pretty cute)

  53. andi October 15, 2008 at 2:39 pm #

    That is so sweet, Congratulations!

  54. Pete Wilson October 15, 2008 at 2:42 pm #

Oh my stinkin’ word. Do you realize what a GIFT that is to have your thoughts written down from the first day you met?!? That’s AWESOME!!!

    I love your wife.

  58. Pete Wilson October 15, 2008 at 6:13 pm #

@Marla Taviano, Some day I’ll share more. It’s really neat to go back and read the day by day of the first year of our relationship. Mistakes and all!
