My Rant
In case you haven’t heard, Nashville is out of gas. Yes, like the whole city. Nobody has really been able to explain the whole phenomenon to me but it’s created city wide panic. THERE IS NO GAS ANYWHERE!!!!
Here are a few images to show you how the gas crisis has impacted my day.
This is proof that I’m almost out of gas.
Here is the line I waited in at a local gas station for 45 minutes during my lunch until they ran out of gas.
While in line, my car stalled out but thankfully I had just enough gas to coast the one (LONG) (VERY LONG) (VERY, VERY LONG) block back to the church where I have officially run out of gas outside of another gas station where I’m waiting for more gas to be delivered.
Now, this is the lunch I ate in my office because I couldn’t go out because if I haven’t already mentioned it I’M OUT OF GAS.
So is the gas crisis affecting you?

I leave in Houston and two different times now we have had a gas crisis (rita and Ike). It is absolutely stunning how it can affect every part of our life. We really think through the places we go and weigh if they are worth the gas. Odd, though that our gas stations are all back open and running (at least the ones with power).
I, luckily, haven’t had to do much driving in the last week, one of the FEW perks of being unemployed, I guess, but I did find a website for people who need gas, and they say they keep it updated!
http://www.wsmv.com/news/17528598/detail.html?rss=nash&psp=news#-
You said you were low on gas @ last night’s sermon, so really you had ALL last night lol, but that was nice of 5th Street to save the day (according to twitter)!
I’ve been consistently finding gas at the Kroger on Hwy 100, near the Bellevue YMCA. The lines haven’t been too bad.
We were all out of gas last week when the power went out. The stations that had power (which was few) ran out, but now everything seems normal.
Carey found gas at a station on White Bridge road just a little while ago. My jeep was out too.
I feel your pain Pete. I haven’t gone anywhere for the past two weekends except work and church (it’s close to the house). I think I’ll venture out late tonight in search of some gas in hopes of not having to wait in line.
Move to Dickson…we got gas last night for 3.89 with no lines and no problems! I know it was not like this all weekend as my father in law had to drive around looking for gas. We actually skipped church Sunday (gasp!) because we weren’t sure we had enough gas to get to church and to small group that night!
What I don’t understand is why there is really no explanation for it other than there’s a gas shortage. I have a full tank for now. I hope to get through the week. I think you should have gotten around to getting in one of those lines a few days ago
Instead of trying to boycott the whole thing. BTW, every time my gas light comes on I think of your rants.
Nope. I was running out of gas and went to the Shell station on Old Harding to fill up. No line either.
In the Nashville paper Saturday it stated it is a pipeline shortfall from Houston. The gas in the pipeline travels 3 to 5 mph. It is coming today or tomorrow from Houston.
I personally have been driving less, and filling up early in the am before the lines expand. We may get gas back, however how are we hedging our costs against rising fuel in the long term?
I have to say… this made me laugh… only because I totally totally understand and have been fighting a case of the Monday’s all day long. I have 1/4 tank to get me through the week… and I have to drive from Nashville to Franklin
Guess I am going to be walking to work…
Pete I feel so badly for you. I was so excited to get gas for $3.75 today and then just 3 hours later when i drove by the same gas station again it was $3.73 a gallon and I was like “what the…?”. I didn’t realize you all were having a gas crisis. I feel so spoiled now. Sheesh. Next time order take-out. Almond Joys make me want to throw up. Ick!!

here is my suggestion

I’ve been lucky b/c I work less than 10ft away. I haven’t had to fill up for 2 weeks now and then today, I was down to the “E”. They had officers conducting traffic and lines at the Old Hickory/Nolensville Kroger, so I only had to wait 20mins.
this was life in 1979. Every day. Gas lines and gas rationing. It sucked.
Wow, sorry. No gas crisis here in Oklahoma. Praying for you guys.
Pete,
my uncle is a high high high power exec at Phillips 66. Everytime I see him, we have oil conversations. He says that THE BEST solution is for every American to cut out a measley 10 percent of their driving and that gas would be plentiful and under $2.00 a gallon.
There’s just one problem. We…Americans…won’t…do…it…
Sad, but true.
None here is Va either although some people tried to raise it sky high and got their hands slapped!
sooo i filled up right before this whole thing happened – only for some reason the ONLY gas station i could get to had gas for $4.30. I filled up, but it was painful. I may vote for running out of gas after that hit to my checking account!
I guess this is the one time I can say being disabled and homebound has its advantages… I haven’t put gas in my car for over a year. It’s sitting in the garage with a dead battery because I can’t get to the garage to start it.
But dude, I’m saving a fortune!!!
Seriously, I’m sorry for the gas shortage… that sucks. I guess you’ll enjoy the bonding time with your family if you can’t leave for meetings? Just trying to find some bright spot for you on a crappy Monday. Hope your tomorrow is filled with full tanks and good lunches.

WOW – I had no idea – I guess I need to watch the news more, (instead of blogging). I feel bad for you guys – All gas “talk” has died down over the past 2 weeks – we’re full and prices are dropping here in MICHIGAN.
Bummer for you – but, I’m with candidchatter – Don’t you have a pizza place that delivers??
Seems to be plenty of gas in Indy. The price has even went down a bit. I’m sure it will shoot back up soon.
So I am taking it that the easy button on your desk did not work when it comes to getting gas? I have learned from your post to always have a survival kit of Doritos and almond joys in case of a crisis // Thank you!
I almost ran out of gas yesterday. Most of the Shell stations around here are totally out of gas, however gas stations across the street from them have gas, weird. Anyway, on my way to church I noticed my gas light was on and the gauge was below the E line, which means, oh crap you better find a gas station, quick! The first gas station I passed was out, so I gambled and went towards our church which is away from the business area and found gas at a Shell station of all places, if they were out, I was probably walking to church. (75% of the gas stations overall in our city have gas now, but we have a major pipeline that supposedly goes into the next town)
No gas shortage here in Ky. Prices range from $3.83-$3.95. I recall another video when you all went tubing and Brandi wanted to get gas, but you said you were good(when the gas gauge was very low) I think we are seeing a pattern here. Miss you guys.
You can always come start a new church in Charlotte, NC. There are plenty of gas stations around that would be happy to fill you up. Thanks for your great blog and keeping it real!
Yikes. Joe and I both got to fill up today in Bellevue, but it is slim pickins. I have a full tank, and a new economy ride….let me know if you need a lift.
No problems here Pete, I filled up Saturday for 3.54 a gallon, whats sad is I am proud that I found gas for 3.54 a gallon.
are you kidding me?
Why is it that it’s just Middle Tennessee in crisis? There is plenty of gas in Kentucky and Illinois (which I drove thru yesterday). Methinks we are not hearing the whole story. . .
I’m feelin’ ya. Daddy says I MUST consider the 1/4 tank mark my ‘E’ to keep from running out of gas. I wish I hadn’t abandoned such wisdom. I can’t go anywhere because I don’t have enough gas in the car to wait in line. I’ll have to call the local station before I leave.
Due to taking care of us Southeast Texans from hurricane Ike, I guess it really does send a ripple affect elsewhere.
Yes.. I have delt with no gas, hurricane Ike.
What’s funny is that on the news, they are blaming “the people of Nashville” for the shortage. I guess the fuel suppliers haven’t notice that we go to work, church, events for our kids, etc. every week.
@LeAnn, That’s a great question. I’ve heard a lot of theories but I can’t for my life figure it out.
WEIRD! I saw that on facebook u were having gas issues hehe and I couldn’t figure out what was going on…. WEIRD!
nothing unusual going on here in eastern north carolina – we got lots of high quality gas here — well I assume it’s high quality – I’m paying for high quality hehe
It’s all a bunch of LIES…. we are not out of gas…. SOMEONE or SOME PEOPLE are doing this on purpose…..just my opinion. (Tell me you remember the gas crunch in the 70′s….????)
ANYWAY…come on out here in Farview….we have gas and PLENTY of it… NO LINES either…
FEEL FOR YA….
i feel your pain we spent all day in the zoo not knowing the crisis was going on Sat. and we were on empty… so when we got out sure enough the light came on but thank God we made it through a 30min line. and filled up. i still do not understand what happened. it seems like people just freaked.
great excuse for the whole town to stay home with their families. like a snow day!
http://www.simplemath.info We All Love reading your post…. Keep it coming
Coming from Charlotte Pike, there is gas at the BP station on White Bridge on the right after you pass Sprintz Furniture. Just filled up tonight with no lines.
The rumor I heard was that there was actually plenty of gas, but a rumor got started that we were running out so everyone and their dogs (literally) went and filled up their cars, their gas cans and whatever else they could fill up. Then the panic really began and the rumor turned into reality. I agree with Randi: it was almost as though someone saw a snowflake and the whole city shut down! Anyways, I got gas today, but it was in Nolensville, so that’s probably not going to do you any good.

Man, OCD’s a little heated LOL, and she seems to be the ONLY ONE who remembers the 70′s HA HA!!!! The gas companies are blaming consumers for consuming twice as much gas as normal, but I blame the media, had they not blown the whole shortage out of proportion, we’d be just fine! What kills me is my family up in Michigan said they just experienced a price hike, but no shortages! It’s just us!
@OCD’ism, I was like 4 at the time.
That’s not good! Thankfully I have a full tank. I live about an hour from Nashville, and I had to drive around for awhile late Saturday night, to find gas, but I managed to find it. I noticed most of the gas stations in my town have gas again today. I’m surprised Nashville doesn’t. Maybe it’s on the way? Have you tried Murfreesboro? They had gas on Sunday and it’s not too far away. Oh, wait. If you’re on empty, I guess that wouldn’t be smart.
holy crow. i’m in south africa and so haven’t even heard about this happening. i need to go watch me some cnn.
This is crazy!!! And a little scary to be honest. LOL…I can’t beleive you ran out of gas though. That’s kinda funny……..no, I’m not laughing.
Um…..luckily I can choose to go out less being a stay at home mom I don’t HAVE to go out everyday like some people. And that’s a good thing, because we live 15 minutes from most everything we do. I’ve been making my husband drive our Honda Accord instead of his Ford F-150 to work everyday because it’s twice as good on gas if not more. However, I think he hates it because he feels less manly in it or something like that. I’m like, “what the heck! how can you feel less manly when you’re 6’3 and have a go-tee?? (how do you spell that??) I have not a clue. goaty, gotea, gote….ok, I give up.
The only gas crisis here in WI is everyone is freaking out about the prices going up due to the shortage in Nashville.
Sorry that you ran out of gas…that is no fun at all. Last winter I refused to buy gas at any of the gas stations between my home & work (I didn’t even have a good reason other than saving maybe 7 cents a gallon). I never realized how long a 30 minute drive could feel when you are watching a gas gauge. I ran out of gas twice (in one month) because of my own stupidity (and it was in the exact same spot both times about 2 miles away from a gas station). My parents were so great about coming to “rescue” me and then they got me a AAA membership, they claim it was a “just because we love you” gift, I have another theory… At least you have a legitimate reason for running out of gas.
I hope things get better for you soon.
Well, it seems that we have plenty of gas in Germany, but there are now ARMED MP’s stationed at EACH PUMP to detour those thinking about stealing it. I’m guessin that has been a problem
.
Whatever the reason for this scarcity, it gives us a taste of what may be to come. Even conservative estimates – see Wikipedia on Peak Oil – say the black stuff is going to get harder, and more, expensive to extract. Since we have a good idea what is ahead, why not prepare for it now? Why wait for the blow to fall when we could be cushioning ourselves against it (and making life more pleasant at the same time)? That’s the thinking behind the Transition movement. Communities are coming together NOW to start living a more green and sustainable lifestyle. For more info and inspiration see http://www.transitiontowns.org/
no gas shortage here in NY ($3.63 a gallon though). There is however an Almond Joy shortage … well, at my house anyway! I’m an AJ freak.
Okay, as long as we are ranting! During a mission trip to the Dominican Republic this summer I cound’t help but notice propane tanks in the back window of many hatch-back cars. Kind of like your BBQ grill gas tank. I asked one of our host / intepreters about these tanks. He informed me that nearly all cars in the Dominican run on tanks of natural gas. They get 100 miles per gallon and it costs about 25 cents per gallon to fill up. This is a third world country mind you with far more limited resources than the good ole’ US of A. It kind of makes you wonder…..if they can do it………….
Chin up!
Whilst there is food on your plate, a roof over your head and people who love you, focus all your energy on the things you have, and not the ones you are missing.
We are so blessed already!!
God bless you.

That is so crazy.. Here in PA we have no Gas issues what so ever. I cannot imagine going somewhere and not being able to any gas.
Things aren’t as bad here in the Ft. Lauderdale Area…Gas is expensive but at least we have it. The good thing is my job is 5 minutes from my house. The bad thing is my church is about 25 minutes from my house and I am there about 4-5 times a week.
Try to find Premium…uh …almost IMPOSSIBLE!!!
Same thing going on here in Birmingham. I have had a hard time finding gas during the day when I’ve been out. Most places are out completely. Some only have $4.59 premium. Some nights a week, when I am driving home kinda late from my eldest’s ball games, I can find a few places with no lines. Seems the farther out of metro Birmingham, the better.
I did hear that a local Walmart got a shipment of gas a few days ago. It was only premium but to help folks out, they were selling it at the regular price of $3.59. Needless to say, someone posted it on the blog for the B’ham paper and they got swamped.
You all should check out The Oil Drum, they’re covering this like mad: http://theoildrum.com

This happenned in Phoenix a few years back – a supply pipe ruptured or some dumb thing, but it froze a whole town. Most of the gas stations jacked the price up and we all had to wait in lines. It got pretty ugly. Us Arizonians aren’t used to waiting in lines.
Last time you took a picture of your speedometer, your car was moving. Its good to see that you took it while stopped. Although, maybe you didn’t have a choice.
this can’t be good for tourism!
sorry about the gas…on another note…jeff and i are teary eyed because you have a photo of our family on your desk…what a partnership is all about…we love you and are so encouraged by you today!
In sunny Florida, we do not seem to have a gas problem, but I’m always very careful with not overdoing.
Sorry you had to have such an un nourishing lunch, but ………..
I see another side to this….should I rant.?….
I see a homeless man enjoying your cheetos and almond joys.
I remember reading about rationing during the big war of the 40′s and all of America and places beyond joined in and gleefully so, because they were helping the cause……hey women gave up their silk stockings for the cause…and sugar…so you probably wouldn’t have been eating your almond joys at all because there wasn’t any…
I am not totally unsympathetic to you running out of gas but you could always get a horse. LOL Seriously ..sorry
i love this blog!!!
