Let’s Brag On Our Kids This Weekend

So Jett started first grade this year. In less than a month, they’ve got him reading. It just cracks me up to listen to my son read me a book.

I took a little video of him reading a book to his brothers the other night. Somehow the reading turned into an all out brawl but I guess that’s life with three boys.

[vimeo http://www.vimeo.com/1724097]

So….go ahead….brag on your kids in the comment section…or dogs…if you have cats you really don’t have anything to brag about!

47 Comments:

  1. Well, I guess I’ll be the first to brag on my kids. Both our daughters made the school chorus and are doing AWESOME in school. And, our son, is also in 1st grade and is doing very well. It’s fun to see him getting interested in reading, even a little bit.

  2. Pete, there is definitely something special about listening to your kids read. My son also just started first grade and went from not reading a single word, to reading to us every night. Amazing what teachers do. Rather then brag on my kids, how bout a shout out to all of those teachers, performing the magic that we can’t seem to find!!

  3. Pete, that is really great isn’t it? It really just makes me smile inside and out when Madolyn comes home with something new and exciting she has learned! I’m really proud of her for her most recent which is after 3 longgggg months my baby can tie her own shoes! I’m not sure this a a brag or a blessing cause it sure makes my morning go quicker..lol

  5. No children or pets, but my nieces are difinitely worth some bragging. Alaina has such a heart for others–always concerned that some classmates don’t have money for ice cream, asking me to pray for sick friends, and so on. And Lauren likes to “read” in her own way, making up fantastic stories as she turns the pages.

  7. I don’t have kids, but I’ll brag on yours again… that was GREAT JETT!!! You don’t have enough time for me to tell you how cool my ten nieces and nephews are. Each one is so unique and smart and intensely talented. Oh… and cuter than any other little people you’ve seen in your life. Then there are my five godchildren… words cannot begin to describe. Kindest little creative souls.

And then there’s the dog. If you can look at the face on my avatar and resist him then you are stronger than me. And if you can resist him, would you be interested in coming over to train him? Because he’s totally running this household.

  10. Even though we just got a new german shepherd pup last week, I must brag on my son. We moved a month ago right before school began. He is in the fourth grade and left all of his friends at his small Christian school to enter into a brand new public school on the other side of the state. He has been a real trooper and taken all of this in stride. He has kept his grades up, met new friends and adjusted seemingly without a hitch!

    He is an awesome kid!

  12. Pete, Pete, Pete…first you were roasting Wilbur the Pig…now you’re doggin’ cats. This blog is going downhill fast. ; )

My kiddo? He’s little…not quite reading, but worth bragging about are his manners! We’re so proud of his pleases, thank yous, etc. Sounds “minor”, but it’s important to us for him to be polite. Also…we had a 6 month old over at our house the other days…and when asked to “share toys”…he shared some of his favorite ones instead of digging into the bottom of the toy box for Sonic Wacky Pac reject toys. : ) And how about this…he’s not even three yet…and he can identify hexagons. :)

  13. Well, no more spelling words in front of Jett! Now you’ll have to do what we USED to do, spell the word backwards…it will work for a while.

We have the “baby-whisperer” – Kyla.
And the jailbird – Kyle. :)

    MELISSA1970 – THAT was genius!!!

  14. I,too, have great kids. I will be so happy when my son, adopted from Russia at age 5, can read as well as Jett did. The public school was failing him and he was getting farther behind all the time. We put him in a private school this year and the teachers just love him there. He is enthusiastic and curious. He volunteers to read…even though still at first grade level when he should be at 3rd. He has come a very long way–from an orphanage to American life…and we are very proud of him. I know he’ll do just fine this year…and will learn to read!

  16. Awesome, Jett reads really well! My son (4th grade) was in a spelling bee with 20 other 4th-6th grade boys and girls. He was the 2nd left standing at the end. The word he went out on was literature. I was so proud! My 2nd grade daughter is an awesome reader. My 3 year old is singing his ABCs and learning letters, my 17 month old is having a word explosion! It’s so fun to watch them learn, isn’t it!? Thanks for giving us an opportunity to brag on our kids!

  19. My daughter just started preshool. She’s doing great and coming out of her timid little shell more and more all the time. She’s very obedient and loves to help.

My son is a genius. I seriously need to have the boy tested. He’s been talking since he was 9 months old. He’s known the alphabet since he was 16 months old. He knows all of his colors, counts to 20, and memorizes the words to his favorite TV shows (we have DVR). He is 2 1/2. His new thing is making up new words. He might actually know a foreign language and I just haven’t caught on yet. Pure genius!

They are both very affectionate and I’ve enjoyed this moment to brag on my kids.

Her sister Lauren got the second lead in the Dickson HS play, and her oldest sisters Erin and Sara are rockin’ the school soccer scene as senior captains (Sara scored her first hat trick of the season on Thursday and Erin is working mid). They love Jesus and for that I am the most thankful. GIRL POWER RULES!!!

Now i took spanish and french in high school, but i never caught on so quickly as he has. Now Shelby, my daughter is never far behind him, echoing his every word. She’s such a quick learner. 23. From a mother of three boys, who has done first grade three times I still love to listen to children who start reading. You said brag so here goes, my oldest is almost 13 and is becoming a video genius. He is amazing reader and writer too. My 10 year old is finishing up a leadership forum in DC tomorrow and is and a great middle line backer. The youngest is 7 and has a sense of humor that cracks everybody up. He smiles and makes you want to melt. He is a little football star as well and reads constantly.

  25. My 11 years old daughter Haylee tried to buy a turkey being raffled off at a Church Bazaar last weekend, because she thought it was crying in it’s cage. The farmer politely told her he couldn’t sell it to her, but if she wanted she could buy a raffle ticket and do anything she wanted with the turkey if she won. She spent $6 on raffle tickets and then went running off to play some games with her friend. I stayed and talked to the farmer and asked what would happen if she won and set it free. He said it was raised in a cage and hand fed, so it would die in the wild. Not exactly what Haylee had in mind. :( Wouldn’t you know, latter that night we got a call…she won the turkey! The intent was to have a fresh raised turkey delivered in time for Thanksgiving dinner, but she would have none of that. She started bawling that she promised God if she won the turkey, she would save his life. Now we’re busy looking for a petting zoo to donate Tucker (the turkey) to. It’s a real life, modern day, Charlotte’s Web!

one of my daughters is the BOMB cheerleader, which is hilarious ’cause i’m kinda of the anti-cheerleader. she also loves to help with saturday night set-up at church, which is awesome! my other daughter has mastered giving kisses, and she can also say “banana,” “cheese,” “bath,” “down,” and “stop that.” so i suppose we can check off five(six?) words on the language acquisition chart. :)

  29. I’ve spent nineteen years now as a SAHM after being in publishing for a decade. And I was struggling with the idea that I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up or what I can contribute to the world that is special. And then it finally hit me: my five children ARE my life’s work! Duh! They are smart and funny and kind and have (fairly) good manners. What else could I be doing with my life that would be more special than raising good kids?

Wonder how long God’s been waiting for me to wake up and smell the coffee on that one?!!!

My son chose to release his turtle back into the wild this weekend even though it was the hardest thing he ever did. I’m so proud of him. His sister is doing cognitive-behavioral therapy with her mom by forcing her to deal with spoons and forks placed in the WRONG SLOTS in the silverware drawer. How smart is that for a nine-year old? The teenager, in all her wisdom, is sneaking into the kitchen and replacing the silverware without being told because she “likes it when Mom is sane.”

They get that they do not have to wait until tomorrow when they are older to be His hands, feet, eyes, ears, and mouth. They teach me far more than I could ever teach them. We also have some pretty fierce Wii bowling competitions. None of that straight bowling for us… we do it w/our backs facing the tv.. laying down on the floor.. and we laugh until our sides ache.

  45. Amen to the cats remark! I think they are little demons with fur.

Gavin is learning to read as well. He sat down and wrote two books (The Good Book and the Bad Book) out of the blue on his own the other day and drew the pictures for them as well. He needed help spelling some of the big words, but has shocked Nicki and me with all he has learned so far in Kindergarten.

Tristan is his own person. He is the one we tell not to do something, he stares us down and as soon as we look away, he does what he wants, but he has a huge heart. The other night, Nicki was finished eating, so Tristan (on his own) got up from his chair went to Nicki and took her plate and silverware to the sink.

Hailey surprised us this weekend and actually did a great job traveling. She started getting a little fussy at lunch yesterday & George commented that she was actually human, since he had not heard her cry or scream up to that point. Nicki and I were pleased as she has been real fussy her first 7 weeks with colic.

  46. So I can top everyone! lol Oldest — Jeremy — has a Masters’ in Music Composition and is writing string quartets, orchestra concertos, and marimba duets! And teaching music to little ones! Spiritually — seeking and completely open to the Lord, but needs to walk with Him. Chris — a commercial pilot and former member of the Air National Guard. He’s a rock-solid Christian, serving in a worship band as well. He’s been on several mission trips. Sarah — also a solid Christian and finishing her 5th year in Aerospace Engineering and then thinking of med school to be an orthopedic surgeon and design new equipment, etc. for that field. She has been to the gulf region on several occasions to help with hurricane relief. Where did these kids come from??!!?? I did everything wrong it seems [I was the kind of mother who tried to shove religion down their throats rather than quietly waiting & trusting in God to reveal Himself, as I have learned now] but God undertakes for us in spite of our failings. I’m so proud of all three…and offer hope to any who are frustrated & discouraged. As we let go and trust Him more, He sweeps in and does the things only He can do! It’s not wrong to teach them about Christ, of course, but the difference is in where our trust is — is it in God Himself, or in our own efforts to reveal Him to them? We must only trust in Him for our children — not in our churches, our own “grand” parenting or our families. He is faithful as we trust only Him!
