I thought this video was hilarious, until I realized this little dude will probably be taking my job in a year or two. I mean wow, I’m just trying to keep my two year old from picking his nose in public and hitting his older brothers in the private place.

It’s hump-day and a perfect day for an all-skate question.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a politician. I wrote a paper in first grade about how I wanted to be the president of the United States. I never really veered off that path. I did an internship all the way through high school at the Tennessee State Capitol. Even through most of college I thought politics was what I wanted to do with my life.
Then in my senior year I started to feel the tug toward ministry.
So that’s me, how about you?

When I was a kid I wanted to be a professional wrestler.
I wanted to be a Vetrinarian, for large animals. I wanted to work in the San Diego zoo. I went as far as my freshman year in college and then drastically changed directions.
i always wanted to catch in the majors…
I wanted to be Superman. Originally it was the flying part, later on it was the x-ray vision.
I love the woman at the end of the video that yelled “Thank you Jesus!” ROTFL
I wanted to be a dentist…then, years later, I realized I’d have to be all up in people’s mouths all day. Ew.
Pete: I gotta tell you. I about wet my pants watching this kid. He sure is mimicking someone. On the question: I wanted to be a professional baseball player. Never had a mind to do much else until 9th grade when I wanted to be a professional basketball player. When reality hit I decided to be a preacher.
I don’t know of anything else I ever wanted to be.
even though i am 40 i STILL want to be Rick Springfield.
Dolphin Trainer
Have you been reading my blog? LOL! I asked this question last week. Anyway, I wanted to BE Dolly Parton. Not be like her, but to actually BE Dolly herself.
My younger brother wanted to grow up to be a fire truck, so my answer didn’t seem that silly when people asked us!
Wanted to be a hair stylist, a teacher, a writer. But underneeath it all, still always wanted to be a mommy, too. Heading out in 8 days to pick up #5 from China – finally after years of dreaming and dreaming of this trip
Oh my gosh! Ya think that kid has been in a service a time or two? His daddy must be the pastor. So funny. He can’t even talk yet, but he sure can get down on some preaching. Too cute.
I know this sounds simple, but I always wanted to be a mother and be involved in ministry in some way. Anytime I played pretend that was what I was doing. So, I guess you could say I’m living my dream.
When I was little, I wanted to be a teacher…but as I grew up, I wanted to be an accountant…until I did some accounting work in College…I realized that I wasn’t all cut out for that. I ended up getting a degree in computers instead. I’m glad I did, that came easily, but I’m completely out of date now that I’ve been a SAHM for 10 years!
that video is amazing and so was the Rick Springfield comment a little ways up – that’s awesome! i wanted to be a stage actress AND a marine biologist. i was highly ambitious as a little girl!
I am reading the book “Desires” by John Eldredge right now. I don’t know if I ever knew what I wanted to be. Thirteen years ago I found a threshold that I was standing at labeled ministry. I preached, taught, did seminars, and wrote in times that I was alone. I went to Bible college, sent out the resumes, had some offers, wife would not follow out of state at the time, so I found myself being a supervisor at Home Depot. It fills the “people contact” that I need for the moment, but I believe that God is fine tuning my desires to where I can see more clearly with what I called for sometime now, “useless desires.” All is well.
@The Gang’s All Here, That is awesome. We’ll be praying for a smooth trip to China!
I wanted to be a star on a 30 minute sitcom, particularly the Cosby Show.
I never really had a dream. Maybe I wanted to be a Pop Star.
I guess its the love of fame we have in us.
major league baseball player
I wanted to be an actress/horse trainer/ballet dancer. I did stick with the horses! Now I work at a ministry in the finance department and also part time at a country club. God has a way of leading us where he wants us…doesn’t He?
Melissa
I wanted to be rich and have a lot of animals. Since I showed and trained dogs for 17 years I guess one out of two is not bad
My recollection is that the longest lasting dream was to be a photojournalist for National Geographic
I wanted to be just like my mom. I have achieved my goal and it’s awesome!! She was a stay-at-home mom and loving and nurturing and fun and silly. Now she’s a grandma of [almost] nine grandchildren who works in a doctor’s office. Someday I’ll be a nurse — when I finish school. See?? You really CAN achieve your childhood dreams.
Heidi Reed
Wow…
As a kid I wanted to be a basketball player, and an astronaut, and a fireman, and a lumber salesman. Now I’m a pastor?
Professional photographer / artist
Well now that I am an empty nester that question is new again so thanks for asking…but the Lord who is faithful to our hearts placed in mine when i was still a little girl the call to Motherhood. Now that I am “done” (well not totally but you know what i mean) I am now waiting to see what my next adventure will be..
prayers appreciated,
Thanks for the great question, just one more reason why I love coming to visit here!
Love wins!
julia
I wanted to be a geologist…the closest I ever got to that is a few classes and my giant rock and fossil collection.
God does have a way of changing our plans…I wouldn’t change my life and job now for anything.
a pediatrician (until realizing it requires advanced math and science abilities). then i triple majored with a minor in college thinking this would provide a plethora of job options… yes and no. now i’m a grad student working in the field of mental of health and moonlighting as an editor and contributing writer. considering a move 3,000 miles away to pursue ministry and a ph.d. program. also thinking about starting a business with a colleague (while keeping my day and ummm night jobs) and using the excess funds to start an orphanage in a developing country.
I had a very specific plan to become a singing missionary doctor. The medical aspect of things was going to be the full-time mission, but on weekends, I was going to do concerts (ala Sandy Patty). (Yes, you should be giggling at me right about now!) Turns out I can’t sing and the sight of blood makes me a little squishy…but at least I get to be a part of ministry!
I wanted to be Pete Wilson but by 3rd grade I was already taller than him so I changed to being a lawyer.
@ ash, you realize every time I walk by your desk today I’m going to call you Sandi Patty, don’t you?
@Giant Idiot, that was just mean.
@Ryan Guard, A lumber salesman? Where did that come from?
a country star. just like Reba McEntire in particular.
I wanted to be a pastors wife with 7 kids
at a little bit older I wanted to be on tv or in a band
i have not been that creeped out in a long time.
but in truth, it’s cool to see a kid that young who has been around church enough that he can mimic it that well.
although adults that preach like that are equally as creepy
I wanted to be an artist, attend Sorbonne, and live la vie bohémienne in Paris on the Rive Gauche. Ended up in Suburbia with kids, trying to get THEIR artistic endeavors off the walls. And the only French I speak is when I’m very, very mad.
BTW I’d vote for ya, Pete!
I love ALL SKATE! I grew up in California so I wanted to be a marine biologist till about 2nd grade and then I realized that it was a lot of school! so I changed to an olympic gymnast, then later a business owner and a mom. I am a business owner and a mom, not bad!
I was thinking along the lines of scientist or astronaut. Little did I realize there would be a whole new frontier of man’s own making that I would explore for myself and into which I can stake my own claim.
A veterinary.
@ Sally, Ahhhhh thanks.
Well, when I was young I wanted to be in the Air Force and fly planes…then someone crushed my dreams by telling me you had to have 20/20 vision and I wore glasses. Humph.
Most of my life I’ve wanted one thing….to sing.
Did that kid remind anyone else of Gage from “Pet Cemetery”?
When I was 4, I wanted to be a kangaroo when I grew up. Then my parents told me that was impossible. I know I had a pretty twisted mind back then too. So I then wanted to be a snake wrangler. I still like catching those buggers!
Who wants to grow up and stop dreaming?
Well, I wanted to be Gidget pretty badly for awhile. In fact, I tried to choose “Francine” as my confirmation name (I was only 10, so don’t let your jaw drop too far now) because I was convinced people could at least call me Gidget, even if I couldn’t be her.
Career-wise, it was a toss up for me between writing the next Nancy Drew series and actually being Nancy Drew. Hasn’t worked out too well for me so far, lol.
a party planner.
I use to tell my mom all the time. All I wanted was to own my own party store and plan parties.
@ash & Pete:

I wanted to be a nun with 9 kids. I obviously didn’t get the concept at that time. I actually have a photo of me at age 3 with a veil on surrounded by nuns, so I think I was unduly influenced.

@brandiandboys: I think having the shananigans of the boys on your blog counts as a real life sitcom. Congrats on reaching your goal!
Now you all just have to lipsinc and dance for Grandparent anniversary parties and we’ll give you credit for being fully like the Huxtables’s.
Oh, and if you fulfill that part of the dream, could you all film it? Seems you might have the resources…
sara

i can’t get over how “mature” his gestures are. that video kinda creeps me out!
when i was real young, i wanted to be a teacher…
I wanted to be Tarzan so I could swing around all day in my underwear and scream at the top of my lungs. And have a pet monkey. And ride on elephants. And wrestle alligators.
And you just knew he wasn’t going to school or doing any homework because his grammar was terrible – “Me Tarzan, You Jane – Where Cheetah go?”
Plus he got to go camping every day and animals would bring him bananas and grapes to eat.
Yeah, I still want to be Tarzan
i always wanted to own a coffee shop since i was 10 or younger.. that might still come true one day
When I was younger my desire was to go into law and eventually politics….which was why I went to the college that I did. Yet, thanks to both an amazing teacher (Native American) and a professor…my feet were planted in a different direction. Thirty years were spent as a Humanitarian Aid Relief Coordinator and Educator for First Responders. This alloed me entrance into numerous nations across four continents.
The teacher I spoke about (Native American) taught me about both suffering and justice. As a child I wathced in horror the things being done to our African American brothers and sisters on TV. This was prior to the “Civil Rights” bill being passed.
I asked him (Mr. Brant) if he would help me write a letter to the president. He inquired as to “Why”…I told him someone needs to let the president know what was taking place in the south. Imagine my shock when he let me know the president was aware of what was happening. I cried…
To comfort me, he asked if I would use my knowledge for “Show and Tell”. Of course, I agreed…seeing the reaction within the faces of my classmates…was the “seed” planted for my career path…although I didn’t recognize it at the time.
___________
You stated above that you’re trying to teach your little one not to pick his nose in public. This reminded me of something that happened several years back while I was home on furlough:
I was at a convention, when my friend (her three little ones with her) came up to talk during the break. As we were talking, her little girl (4 years old) picked her nose and wiped in on my suit jacket! Her mom was horribly embarrassed and apologized.
However, I saw it as something normal…and thought nothing of it. At least she knew to “get rig of it”. My immediate laughter, brought relief to her embarrassment.
Now, that “litle girl” is a Mom herself…and still remembers that day.
Pete, you have a great site. The fact you do not censor those that have a differing viewpoint is, indeed, rare. You’re a blessing!
Michelle
What a fun post-thanks!!!
I always wanted to be the marine biologist (still do in some ways) or a vet and so I am still trying to figure out how I ended up majorng in Elementary Education????
I wanted to be an actress. I even tried to talk my dad into moving to L.A. and getting me an agent. I thought I was THAT good. lol. Later I wanted to be a journalist. Still do. I work in insurance now, but, life’s not over : )
I wanted to be a Researcher, Nurse, Teacher, Gardener, Musician, Confidant, Artist, Craftsman, Comedian, Traveller who knew about lands, languages, peoples, cultures.. Then I sort of gave up thinking – life is not about Plans and Dreams. Then I became a Housewife and Mother and suddenly realized I am all of what I dreamed of being except for Travelling.. so now I am sure, I will do that too when the time comes… Everything has a Rhyme, Reason and Season after all.
Oh I love me an “all skate” question!! I knew I didn’t have the grades for becoming a Dr, so I thought I would be a nurse taking care of cancer patients. That never happened.
I love what God has called me do though. I wouldn’t change a thing.
I wanted to be a ballerina and an astronaut!! I even went to space camp one year. eek. let me just throw myself under the bus…..
When I was really little, I wanted to be a babysitter, in middle school it turned into anything in the music business, but specifically a music supervisor. I have one and a half down, and now I want to be a mommy!
@Whitney, Why don’t we focus on getting you married first.
I wanted to be a youth pastor – my youth pastor was so cool. What happened?
I wanted to be a doctor, a singer, a judge, and a writer. And a librarian. And an interpreter. I changed my mind a lot.
Superman…oh wait I am Superman.
Dude…that is freakin’ hilarious!!! Speaking in “baby” tongues, I guess.
I actually wanted to be an architect when I was a kid. Loved drawing house plans.
Then, I went with my dad’s quartet to the radio station where they had a live show on Sunday afternoons. The “dj” would let me go into one of their empty production rooms and play with the audio board…I was HOOKED! Got into radio as a disc jockey at age 15, then into TV weather by age 24.
Never dreamed then I would be a Pastor today!!
Joe Case
http://www.joecase.com
I wanted to be a sahm mom (and the great thing was that is exactly what I became)!
lol, cute kid! I wanted to be a professional body builder or chef. Now I don’t like to exercise or cook : )
In the 4th grade I wrote a story about how I wanted to be a Top Gun fighter pilot for the Navy and fly to Iraq and bomb Suddam Hussein. I figured afterward I could always become a commercial pilot… I blame it on Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer for sure!
I received a call to ministry when I was 12 but since I had never seen a woman do anything in a local church vocationally I figured I would just serve as a lay leader. I didn’t really understand at all what God wanted me to do. I could not envision it. Sooooo…
in my heart of hearts I wanted to do something as a vocalist, but didn’t figure I was good enough. I went to college where everyone said “Don’t major in voice – you’ll never get a job.” So I majored in elementary ed, although I don’t know why. I am not grand with children. Looking back that is a very funny thing. I took one class and changed to a nursing major, since I felt drawn to caring for people. Then I had my second child and quit to stay home with my babies.
Now I’m doing what I wanted to do all along…..I am a worship minister. In ministry and I get to sing! yea!
Ok. This is a scream. Hey you made the front page of WordPress with this by the way!
I wanted to be Real Estate Agent.
That kid is seriously freaking me out
Haha!
The first thing I remember wanting to be, is a fireman, then a youth Pastor. I am neither
At the tender age of 5, I wanted to be an LSU cheerleader. (Parents indoctrinated me early.) That dream didn’t last very long (not the most athletic/girly thing that’s walked the planet), and as I grew up my interests shifted — over the years I have wanted to be: a lawyer, social worker, plastic surgeon, chef, beautician, flight attendant, concierge, missionary, nomad, journalist, photographer, childrens minister, shop owner, drug rep, teacher, a graphic designer and a mom.
We’ll see where I end up, haha.
a pastor. i still do.
I wanted to be a ballerina, then a primary school teacher, then a writer, then a dance teacher (and write books when I retired).
I also remember (after watching a 1-episode TV drama when I was about 8 years old) wanting to be a Nun. So I walked around the house with a towel on my head which I made into a habit.
PS – that has to be one of the most profoundly disturbing videos I have ever seen. And not in a good way. Eek!
NBA Baller. But God made me short and white. So I settled for musician.
@Pete…that’s the plan at least. Got anyone in mind??
Let me just say that I am so glad YOU don’t preach like this!
As I’ve read through all of these posts, it reminded me of all the things I said I wanted to be when I was little. A nurse, a librarian like my mom, an artist, a cosmetologist, a pediatrician, a singer and dancer, but always always most of all wanted to be a wife and mom. Like someone else said, all my pretend things involved playing house and dolls. I’m now FINALLY a wife and really “playing” house, and the mom thing is unsure, but we’ll see!
I wanted to be an accountant. I loved numbers as a kid and still do now. I guess that is why I am an accountant.
I wanted to be a flight attendant or interior design. Now I am toying with the idea of going to school for occupational therapy or something along that line.
You president? Cool!!!!!!!!
I just wanted to be famous but my careers changed from a singer, dancer, actress, Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader….see how they all put me somehow in the spotlight. I grew up to become a teacher. Its not the stage that I had hoped for when I was younger but I still get to perform and 20 five year olds is a tough audience!
The gangs all here, we are leaving next week for China to meet our 5th child also. This is our 3rd from China, but 5th overall. If anyone would like to follow along they can go to http://www.theelisonproject.org I wanted to be a lawyer and I never ever wanted any children. I was also an atheist:) I am now a stay at home, home schooling Jesus freak that loves children. Not just my children, but just about all the children on the planet! Shelby
@Shelby, We have a motto around Cross Point that says, everyone’s welcome, nobodies perfect, and anything’s possible.
Your living proof that ‘anything’s possible’. It’s cool to see how God is transforming your life!
@Whitney, I might have a few guys in mind!
Readiing though all these posts to this point caused a variety of emotion. The one thing that was crystal clear is the innocence of childhood. We KNEW we were capable of anything!
Then as time passed…many were told what they “couldn’t” aaccomplish. I went back the third time and read many of the comments. This let me see that many of these comments came from folks…who, obviously, had desires set within their hearts planted by the Lord. It also causes me to think about all the ways the Body of Christ has been ‘short changed’ when we were told what we “couldn’t” accomplish for one reason or another.
It’s much easier to pull up a young sapling…than it is to pull up a mighty oak whose roots are down deep. This is something that has not escaped the attention of the enemy.
IS IT EVER TOO LATE TO DO THE RIGHT THING?
Michelle
video – Too Funny!
as to the question – I wanted to be a dentist – I wound up not far from that, I teach dental assisting students now!
When I was little, I told my mom I wanted to be a “garbaahhge man” like in the Glad Jonathan Winters commercials. My mom thought to herself “I hoped my daughter would do more than that, but if that’s what she wants to do….”
Then a veterinarian, a news caster, teacher, singer, music promoter, Foreign Service Officer… then I needed a job. Vanderbilt hired me and now I help advise kids on what they want to be when they grow up.
That video is unreal. Oh my word.
When I was little, I wanted to be a writer. And a librarian. And get married. And have babies.
Three out of four ain’t bad.
i love his little dance as he crosses the stage!! haha
i wanted to be rainbow brite when i grew up and spread color and cheer to the world. i still want to be rainbow brite, actually. i’ve got some time, though, i’m not quite grown up just yet
I really wanted to be a carpenter when I was really little, but for the bulk of my life before surrendering to ministry I wanted to be a policeman.
I liked that they could speed and run red lights, and those lights in top of the cars still captivate me.
I STILL want to be a policeman, but I’m called to be a pastor.
Sigh. Maybe I can at least get some flashing lights for my car for whenever I have to rush off to do something …pastoral. =)
very little- a fireman
between 3rd and 11th grade: a quarterback or scuba diver or soldier or photographer or astronomer, depending on what day you asked.
12th grade: a marriage counselor (??)
ended up as a researcher, then a musician…go figure.
I wanted to be a nurse, even won a “when I grow up” speech in elementary school, but once I failed 9th grade science, I realized it wasn’t quite for me! Taking Anatomy and Physiology in college just confirmed it! I, then, lived and traveled overseas, and realized I was good with people (even voted friendliest person in HS lol, only 55 kids there, but I’ll take what I can get), and wanted to travel again, so I chose to major in resort management. Wish I went into nursing now, more money, and pretty good job security, considering the demand!
nice video. thanks.
except for wanting to be a writer/author/journalist, in short, something to do with written words, i can’t honestly say i ever really had any burning desire or ambition to be anything. now i have a lovely wife, two lovely kids taller than me (and still growing) and a job which is far above what i thought i would get – all thanks to God.
wish you all the best in your ministry. God bless.
When I was a child, I wanted to be an adult. Now that I’m an adult, I want to be a child.
I wanted to travel and be a singer. Then I came down from the dream cloud I was in and truly just wanted to be the best mom I can be. Let’s see…I’ve got 2 daughters that seem to be somewhat normal and over their lives I’ve sang many a song to them. I still sing to my 14 year old. She may want to run away, but with me holding her down she can’t get away!
jk I just want them to have a better start than I did. And with my husband and I working together with God-how can we go wrong?
Wow, that was hillarious!
Thanks for sharing.
Pro Wrestler
Cowboy
Truck Driver
Mechanic
I can see how the 4 could come in handy even today. I could drive the truck that carries the ring to the next venue. If the truck broke down then I could fix it. When I got to the next venue my wrestling name would be Cowboy Dave. Ah! To be a kid.
I wanted to work at 7-11. Free candy…
jockey… grew too tall
vet…. good horse skills, bad math skills
singer….found the perfect fit.
that preacher kid is amazing. He didn’t want to give his mic back. ha!! (do you think you can save money if you hire a therapist 20 years ahead of time?)
