I’ve got a monster headache. I probably have some kind of headache at least 3 days a week. They often only last for a few hours but they’re a real pain. Read an interesting article yesterday on the five most common headaches and how to treat them. You can READ HERE if you’re interested.
So how often do you get headaches? What do you think causes them? And how do you get rid of them?

I get quite a few headaches from a lot of computer screen time (Pro Tools), a lot of loud music with headphones or in-ears in, and not enough to eat.
I keep a big bottle of Advil liqui-gels in my backpack. 3 or 4 at a time usually takes care of it.
I usually take a nap or Tylonal or Motrin to get rid of them. I used to use that Head On stuff but I can’t find it anywhere!
Mine are usually from screaming children or sinuses
I actually have a headache right now
I am with you, I get them at least 3 days a week, but they are usually at different levels. I believe now that I sit in front of a computer screen 90% of the day it affects me, that and stress, but I have always suffered from migraines off and on, I think I inherited them from my mom. If it is extremely bad I have to sleep it off, it affects my driving and literally makes me sick. If it is an average headache then I drink extra caffeine or eat something or take some medicine if there is some available, usually one works or a combination of the three.
I very seldom get a headache. If I do I always can “trace back” to what brought it on. Skipped lunch. Soda pop. Too little sleep. Bad diet. Stressed out(more than normal). Etc. Avoid whatever the cause is and drink lots of water. If that doesn’t fix it then I have to visit a chiropractor which is very seldom the last years now that I know I need to find the trigger point of the pain.
Excedrine!
I also sometimes need some pop….
My DH gets bad migrains and I know it’s stress for him…and not taking his blood pressure meds the way he should..he’s naughty!!
i seldom get headaches.
if i do the cause is usually my husband (or my allergies).
naps seem to be my best “cure”.
I get them a lot. It is mostly sinus/ allergy / weather related. I too have had a dull one for 3 or 4 days. I hope the rain helps!
I have a condition known as Chronic Debilitating Migraines, so I know how you feel. Mine last for days and medication does nothing to help. I wrote an article about it, actually… I usually use feverfew and chamomile herbs to treat it.
@brandiandboys, That’s not funny!
LOL at your wife’s comment. And I almost always get them because of caffeine withdrawals, meaning I skipped my morning coffee
Two Excedrin Migraine work superbly well. The other reason I get them would never be the reason why you get them.. we’ll just leave it at that
It’s all about having the excedrin with you at all times my brother!
Don’t get a lot of headaches but when I do it’s because the pain in my right shoulder (from carrying all of the boys, you understand) makes it’s way up to my noggin.
And then I swallow two or eighteen Ibuprofen and all is well in my world.
I have had a very bad year for headaches this past year. They seem to come from my neck and then migrate to my head. No clue why I get them, Advil migraine liguid-gels seem to be the only thing that helps.
I rarely get headaches, if I do they are usually sinus headaches. I learned that staying hydrated helps to prevent most headaches, I am talking water not coffee or coke.
I have been getting headaches every couple of days lately too. My favorite cure is a bottle of Starbucks Frappuccino. Excedrin seems to help too. I’m not sure what’s been causing mine lately, but I’m wondering if I need to have my eyes checked again. Too much time on the computer might have something to do with it too. I hate headaches! (I am going to have to disagree with you on one thing… what Brandi said… it was funny. Sorry!)
Hope your headaches ease.
I use to have dull headaches nearly every day for two years with occasional migraines. My eye doctor kept mentioning that bananas can be triggers for headaches…which I ate a banana every morning. I thought he was nuts. I finally got tired of hearing him mention it, so I quit eating bananas. Amazingly my headaches went away. That has been about four years ago. I rarely have headaches now. I miss eating bananas, though…but not worth the headaches. I thought I was eating healthy!!!
Jenny, you might be addicted to caffeine. Withdrawl from caffeine causes headaches.
Awww, come on, Pete – Brandi’s comment was kinda funny…..
I used to get migraines 3 times a month – I go to the chiropractor now – I’ve only gotten 3 in the last year…..
I’m not gonna try to sell anybody on it.
But, that’s what worked for me.
Wow, I can so relate! I have a monster headache today too! I get them from stress. I hired a Contractor to finish my garage and he’s done a mess of a job and I’m totally stressed!!! I’ll probably have it until after a good night of sleep! I hope you get rid of yours soon!
P.S. LOL at Brandi’s comment
The reason Excedrin works is because it has caffeine in it. I would say the majority of my headaches are caused by a lack of caffeine — mostly because I fill my body with it and it feels depraved when I don’t drink my diet ooke or vanilla late…
Mine are pregnancy related, but I get them every day. I take Fioricet and it works like a dream. One a day. It’s a prescription and if it’s safe for a preggie chick you can’t go wrong. Ask your doc. Hope you feel better soon.
Heidi Reed
i used to get headaches and then i went to lakeland.
btw, pete, thanks for the visit and the comment on my post. i’m truly honored.
I usually get them in spurts…I have bad sinuses so I get sinus headaches.
I’ll tell you my headache story when time permits. The short version is, don’t skip the part about rebound headaches. Most of us take entirely too much over the counter pain medicine.
I rarely get headaches, but recently I had to sleep in a smoking room in a hotel and I had the worst headache for 3 weeks. Nothing seemed to cure it and for a while I was convinced I had some kind of brain tumor…ha When I do get a regular headache I take alka seltzer plus cold and for some reason it takes care of it within minutes…20 or so and a hot water bottle also works fabulous for my fam. Hope you get a handle on them soon. They are no fun!!
i suffered from chronic headaches for years. two things have helped and now i might get one a month compared to one every day. first i had to give up caffeinated drinks. that helped. and now i see a chiropractor once a month which has worked wonders.hope you find something that helps.
I’ve found that mostly I get headaches with the weather. If it’s about to rain and the clouds are heavy and about to unleash, I get a monster headache that can last up to two days. For myself and others, I have told them to experiment. Some people are responsive to caffeine. So they will have a strong cup of coffee and be okay..some are affected adversely by it though. Gatorade is my other ace in the pocket. Because you can get a headache to dehydration, sometimes a small Gatorade does the trick nicely
hope this helps!
I once met a girl who asked me what a headache felt like. She told me she had never had one before. I asked her if we could switch heads… Oh well, I get a ton of headaches. The worst one I ever had made me puke and I lost feeling up and down the left side of my body and all I could see was blue. That was NO fun! But the everyday headaches are equally annoying. I feel your pain.
I rarely get headaches…but can always tell when I get way over stressed…I get *tingly* spots all over my face. Don’t know which I’d rather…
I have one right now also!! You know what I use BC powder… I know it is horrible for you but man it works!!!
Brandi– Love it!
So how often do you get headaches?
once a week. they last for 3 days.
What do you think causes them?
brents day off is friday. then we spend the weekend together on worship team. thats friday, saturday and sunday. 3 days.
And how do you get rid of them?
send him back to the office on monday.
Ha ha…love the picture. Very ‘Los’ of you.
Sorry, just haven’t seen you post many self-portraits of yourself for your blog.
lol…that comment was actually from me. Lisa was logged in under her account on my computer so…yeah. The girl’s got her own computer and she still has to get on mine. Whatcha gonna do?
I get headaches maybe once a month.
That should tell you why.
If I feel it coming on, I’ll take something and take a nap to sleep it off…
If it hits hard (maybe 3-4x a year) I take something really strong….
If it still is hanging on and really painful…I go to the ER and get a shot (and possibly a magnesium IV)…that only happens once or twice a year…in fact, I think I have only had one of those in the last two years or so…
@bradruggles under the alias of @lisaruggles, I actually thought it was very Ruggles like. You’re my inspiration!
I had migraines for years (the kind with throw-up, light sensitive and terrible pain down my neck and back. Then I developed nosebleeds and discovered I had high blood pressure. Since then I have laid off of the salt and take meds. I rarely have headaches now. When I get one its because of my sinusis. The only thing that helped me back then was excedrin (migraine formula).
Normally, I try and watch some Titans football. Of if it’s Saturday I watch some college football. Or play do 3 or 4 mock fantasy drafts on espn.com. Sometimes a trip to Home Depot is the fix, or buying a flat panel TV will reduce the pain. Also, a game or two of Madden works. All of these are acceptable treatments for a headache. It’s time we guys reclaim the power of the convenient headache.
@Chris Nichols, Brilliant! Yes, we need to reclaim the power of the “convenient headache”. That will preach brother!
I get one almost every single day, sometimes Migraines and even had a catscan in college because I passed out from it.. I have been to the eye DOC. To the Regular Doc and nothing works…
I have been told I need to see a Chiropractor, a min of 3 times a week, who has money for that… and to me thats just a quick fix….
I wake up with them, I get them runing in the morning, I get them as soon as any amount of stress hits… so about every 15mins at work
Any help with this anyone would be great!
i’m about to blog about the same thing…interesting:) i get them often. between the weather and stress they happen often. i do see a chiropracter at least 1 time a week. that i recommend. really. most take insurance a there would be a copay. not a dr, but here’s a reason…often times i have a vertabrae out and when i’m adjusted within a short while, my headache goes away. or pop 2 aleve. they work well too
Love the convenient headache reminder! Football season is coming up so I need to hold off on using any, Saturdays and Sundays will be full of football
I get headaches 2-3 times a week. Usually caused by not drinking enough water throughout the day, or they follow a sugar crash. Advil Liquid Gels and water usually do the trick.
I used to get alot of headaches, but my neurologist told me to start taking 250mg of Magnesium before I go to bed. Aparently, it is a natural tension reliever and it helps with circulation. I rarely have headaches anymore. It’s worth a try!
I get migraines quite often and take medication at the onset of one. The meds help since I still have to go about my daily activities like taking care of the kiddos.
Sometimes however it doesn’t and I have to call someone to help. Thankfully I’ve only had to do that a couple of times.
What causes them? I haven’t a clue. If I knew then I would try to eliminate it from my life so it wouldn’t trigger another migraine.
dehydration…drink 2 cups of water…cures it everytime for me.
I avoid the triggers – being around loud music/too many loud people/loud noises, being hungry or thirsty, being around smokers/smoke, spending more than an hour in the sun or watching the screen.
The only headaches I cant seem to avoid are the ones when allergy season starts for that there is claritin.
I get migraines a lot; I have a disease that fuses my joints together and it’s affecting my neck, so along come the headaches. Changes in weather also bring them on in me, I assume because the pressure changes affect the pressure in my joints.
What do I do for them? Not a whole lot. My normal pain meds (vicodin) doesn’t work on headaches so I usually just use muscle relaxers and that helps more than anything. If you get them often, taking a mild muscle relaxer or something like Midrin may calm your muscles down enough to do some good… I’m obviously not a doctor, so you may want to ask a real one before taking anything.
Now, onto the more important things… after the headache is gone and you’re not nauseous anymore… I highly recommend chocolate. Or french fries. Or anything indulgent to make up for the fact that you’ve just been in pain. That works for me too
Here’s hoping for headache-free days ahead!

I have recently cut Mountain Dew from my diet and have caffeine withdraw headaches every day. Excedrin migrane works like a charm EVERY TIME!!
. The wife and I call it the wonder drug.
Often times dehydration can be a cause of headaches. I tend to find that plenty of water and a power nap can do wonders. On a more cynical note, I never believed in total depravity until I became a pastor
I’ve found that being in the ministry can at times be little more than a front row ticket to sin and depravity. THAT gives all pastors a monster headache!
And I’m sure it gives God a monster headache too!
get them all the time from stress and being on the computer all day at my job. But I love me some Rapid Release Tylenol. That stuff is the Bomb.
Oh snap. That makes me sad for you. I will totally start praying for complete healing. I have battled migraines since the onset of puberty and have been in and out of doctors offices since. I know you don’t want to hear this…as it won’t really help your situation…but since I got off of birth control pills, I have only had 3. That is down from like one every 3rd day or so.
I haven’t commented before. I read your lovely brides blog. If you don’t already you should see a chriopractor. I used to get headaches at least every other day some stress headaches & migraines I started going to the chirop. at first once a week now once a month depending on my back but I maybe one or two headaches a month. you might try it and see if it helps. I was poping tylonel, excedrine and advil like crazy I like that now I ‘m not putting all that in my body.
i got headaches all the time about 6 months ago…had no idea why. then a friend asked if i chew my gum for a long time. my answer: yes. she said to stop doing that…something about old gum that gives people headaches. i stopped chewing old gum. no more headaches. CRAZY! no science as far as i know that confirms this but it worked for me.
I used to get headaches, especially sinus headaches. Now I go see my chiropractor. No more headaches!!!
Have had a headache almost daily for 44 years. When it’s a migraine, if I use an Imitrex nasal spray (1 puff only in one nostril) AT THE ONSET OF THE HEADACHE, it takes the pain away immediately. If I have a tension headache in the back of my neck, Advil Liqui-gels, lying down on a tube sock with 3 tennis balls down inside and tied off at the open end of the sock, placed right where the tension in my neck is and lying on it, puts counter pressure in that area and takes the pain away. Learned that one from my physical therapist I saw for headaches. Have to use them a lot due to sitting at computer, driving, etc. and getting in awkward positions causing bulging discs in neck to start a headache. Biofeedback machines for a few days help a person tremendously learn how NOT to sit and what slight adjustments can be made to make a HUGE difference in the amount of pain. Also prescription Butalbitol when it is a headache behind one eye, containing a vasal dilator, caffeine, and a pain killer works wonders (this is another name for Esgic!) And….amen on rebound headaches!
I use imitrex when I get migraines. It knocks the headache out within an hour.
My Dr. also told me that if I take pain relivers everytime I get a headache that I could start getting rebound headaches more often. He put me on a steriod for a week to break that cycle.
Pete, I have been offline at a retreat/study break so I’ve missed so many posts! But I just wanted to say I use ibuprofen along with – truly – “Head On”. It actually works for me even though they are the most annoying commercials on the planet. I now keep it by my bed and in my purse……..
I usually hardly ever get headaches. But here lately I’ve been getting one almost everyday. So, i went to my chiropractor. He felt around my neck and shoulders and said that my muscles were terribly tensed up around my neck and shoulders. So, since then I’ve been getting an adjustment everyweek, and the headaches are gone! You should try chiro. if you haven’t. It works!
My two girls and I get migraines frequently. They seem to be hormone related. Also we will get them if we stay up too late, get up too early, sleep in late, go out when the sun is too bright, get too hot, get too hungry, forget to drink enough water, eat the wrong foods, get stressed, or when a storm is moving in and the barometric pressure is low. We take medicine for the migraines. For me, usually the medicine works, but for my girls, it often doesn’t. We take Zomig, Maxalt, or Imitrex. Hope this helps you!
Like Rachel, we, too, have recently been frequenting the chiropractor. We have an excellent one and he helps us a lot.
First time here…
nice to meet ya!
Make sure it isn’t coming from your neck. Degenerative changes (mild arthritis) can give you “cervical headaches”- Google that.
I get them. I am a sad sack when they come too.
God Bless!
when i was a teen i used to get headaches alot. My dad showed me a pressure spot on my hand, and although it’s a bit uncomfortable.. it works. It’s the fat part of skin between your thumb and index finger. Put your other thumb as close to the bottom of that part of skin as you can, and press down as hard as you can stand it for about 20 seconds. It works for me every time.
