Ugliest Dog?

Gus the dog has three legs, one eye and no hair, except for a white tuft on the top of his head. He’s a real winner. He won the World’s Ugliest Dog contest on Saturday at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Northern California.

His owner, Jeanenne Teed, brought Gus all the way from St. Petersburg, FL, to compete for the dubious distinction.

So, you’ve got to ask. Who in the world would actually take a dog across the country to compete in such a competition? Any ideas?

Probably someone who is looking for a little affirmation in their own life and they are living it out through their dog, even though he is ugly, he belongs to this owner and they get to share in the spotlight with the ugly dog, except on your blog because all I see is the dog and the owners arm and hair, so no spotlight for them :)

wow! ive just spent a couple minutes staring at the second pic and for the life of me i can not figure out what happened to that poor little thing. whatever it was, he deserves an award!

who would go cross country for such a competition??? prob someone who wants to somehow “give back” to the dog. they must really, really love Gus. and im sure it gives the owner some sort of fulfillment and possibly some worth and significance.

    or…thats just a bunch of psycho-babble.

I saw them on the Today Show this weekend and they entered him because he IS ugly AND he also has cancer and the treatments are expensive. Their winnings are going toward his treatment. Isn’t that sweet?!

wow, just wow. that poor little dog. i hope they adopted him that way and didn’t do that to him just to win a contest.

@ Lori K. And the dog has cancer? Holy cow, nothing is going right for that poor dog. At this point I’m not sure prolonging his life is a good thing but then again it does make for a very sweet story!

Well, you know what they say . . .
    “Every dog has his day.”
(I know, I know — I can hear the groans already)

That’s the only kinda dog my wife will let me to get at this point. Well one that has 4 legs and no cancer. But I am working her at somepoint to allow me to get a dog with fur.

I was gonna say something sarcastic until I read that he has cancer and the winnings would go toward his treatment. That is an excellent reason to drive cross country for such a weird contest.

the festival is actually really fun. We have a similar one here in Florida. Yeah the St. Pete dog has been on local news and other local places, so the owner might out for the fame. I think though its just a fun festival that a lot of people get in on. I saw a special on Animal Planet about this festival, I want to go sometime. They have competitions for the best looking dogs, so why not the ugliest? Its a form of dog equality!

I think he definitely deserved the title! Not sure who would want a dog known for that particular one though. Maybe it’s because sometimes something can be so ugly it’s almost cute.

Okay so he is REALLY ugly, he is a chinese crested and we happen to have a chinese crested and I’ll be honest, I don’t look at our dog and think to myself “That’s one good looking dog!” , but she has grown on me…she has a great personality as most CC’s do and she is a lover…best of all, my son can sleep with her and not need to be hospitalized. He has very severe asthma and he can’t be around dogs, but this breed doesn’t bother his asthma. As for the actual question… the same kind of person that would enter their child in a beauty contest…for some people, pets are like children and they just want to show them off. I’m not condoning it, but we all do it in one way or another…I can’t say I would ever put my kids in a beauty pagent but I signed them up for a photo contest to help a friend and you can bet your hind end I was proud when my youngest took the prize!!! I think it is about the same thing, some are just more passionate about it than others.

i don’t know why but he’s so ugly he’s cute, don’t you think? poor dog. this goes with your more recent post –i am thankful that i (and my dog) don’t have physical ailments that cause us any real duress. there is much to be thankful for. i am thankful too, that somebody out there can love this little diamond in the rough canine!

I’m pretty sure this is a distant, distant second in-bred cousin of Meg’s.

Oh my word. He certainly is beauty-challenged. However, beauty is only skin deep.

At first I thought the owners may be crazy for traveling across country, but now that I know ‘why’….it sounds less crazy. They obviously love him.
