Seven Burning Issues

Relevant Magazine is doing a series of articles entitled “The Seven Burning Issues” dealing with hot topics in Christianity. This particular article you can read HERE has to do with homosexuality and the church.

Their panelists include but are not limited to such Christian leaders as Nancy Ortberg, Chuck Colson, Steve Brown and N.T. Wright.

Here’s my question. If we assume that “homosexuality” is one of the burning issues today in Christianity what do you think the other six are? What is your burning issue?

This is a Watercooler Wednesday post.

Hymns vs. praise songs! Just kidding – haha!

I would hope the environment and extreme poverty and hunger end up somewhere on the list.

  2. jimkastkeat June 17, 2008 at 6:24 am #

I would agree with Relevant that homosexuality is a much needed conversation in the church (and too often never-present).

I’m guessing some of their others will include:
[1]women in leadership (though I find it sad that this is still a ‘burning issue’)

    [2]war

    [3]the environment (God is green!)

    [4]other religions/pluralism/relativism

    [5]people wearing jeans to church

[6]pastors with cool hair cuts, cool glasses, and/or cool shoes

For me, Pete, it’s inflexibility. We have so many things in common, a God who is full of loving Grace and yet Christians spend their time on things that either don’t matter or aren’t found in His word and become rigid proponents of these things. We’re losing our relevance because the world is seeing inflexible people instead of people who reflect the character of Christ.

I hope that divorce is on the list. I am sick of hearing about Christian couples getting a divorce. Especially those who are older and have served as mentors in their marriage to the younger generation. Uggghh! What is wrong with people? Why can’t they just keep the covenant they made with God and their spouse? Can you tell I have heard some bad news regarding couples divorcing in the last couple of days??

  6. Patty Dolan Tervo June 17, 2008 at 6:43 am #

How sad a reflection on this world that homosexuality is a burning issue anywhere. We are absolutely not here to pass judgment on anyone…gay or straight! God is the final, the only judge and jury. Let’s focus on real issues like poverty, bigotry, our dying earth. Peace and prayers!

    1. Has our “culture” watered down our faith?
    2. Deeds vs. Faith
    3. How do you define a “church”
    4. How do you define a “christian”
    5. How to take back your life in a world full of “me” and “I want” and “consumerism”
    6. How to ask for forgiveness and mean it not just say it.

    One burning issue is….Family

    - divorce
    - absent fathers (and mothers)
    - lack of male spiritual leadership in the home

Can the Church help restore the family unit in America?

  9. mpt June 17, 2008 at 6:58 am #

My most burning issue is the Church’s lack of love. For each other especially. What does real love look like? (not just “nice”) Do we even know each other? Let alone love each other. And how can we be united if we don’t love?

    My 6 Burning Issues:
    1. Apathy
    2. Legalism
    3. A Lack of willingness to change to be more effective
    4. Politics in the church
    5. Lack of focus on Jesus vs. A lot of focus on stuff that doesn’t matter to Jesus like “Environment” “Politicians” “Fill in the blank”
    6. Holding firm to Truth vs. Compromising on Truth to draw a bigger crowd.

  13. ally June 17, 2008 at 7:11 am #

Rather than naming homosexuality, I’d suggest just sex in general. Sex is so perverted by our culture, and heterosexual Christians seems to struggle just as mightily (as many homosexuals) with being obedient to God’s design for sexuality. Christians need open and honest dialogue about premarital sex, lust, pornography, cable television/movies, but instead we seem to shy away from those issues–other than saying “don’t do it.” As a single person, this is definitely a burning issue for me as I struggle to live in the world but not be of it.

I’d add poverty, divorce, and grace/mercy (us learning to extend to each other, our leaders, etc.)

  14. Megan June 17, 2008 at 7:16 am #

I found this article very interesting. Obviously its a very relevant topic, but my question (that wasn’t addressed) is, do these people think that homosexuals can also BE christians? The article mentioned “They need the Lord, and somehow they have become societies “untouchables” to some Christians.” I have gay friends who claim to be Christians, and again, it isn’t my place to judge whether or not they actually know the Lord, but I always wonder what “Christian intellects” would say to that question?

Ok, sorry for the rant. My guesses for the other six issues……….Divorce, Women in ministry, traditional church vs. the new casual welcoming church, denominational conflict/barriers, probably the judgmental nature of many Christians or the lack of compassion that Christians actually have for the poor and needy. I think there are many Christians who are “stalled” in their walk and don’t have compassion for others as we should.

church identidy crisis. as new leaders emerge (oh no THAT word), they are more & more disillusioned with what church has become and they are changing it. so the church is becoming something different. what/why/how is church in 2008-2025?

  16. Starwoodgal June 17, 2008 at 7:24 am #

Lawsie Mercy! You do like to stir the hornet nest. ;)
    Some “burnings” I’ve thought about:
    1. What qualifies as “sin”? (seems the rules change a lot)
    2. Do people still believe “once saved, always saved”?
    3. Feel good church – do they preach what you want to hear or what you need to hear?
    4. Ambiguity in the church
    5. Indifference (going through the motions) Loss of Faith.

    re: homosexuality

A pastor I heard years ago in Colorado said that one can be homosexual and a Christian so long as they choose to remain celibate and not act on their homosexual desires/fantasies.

I have several gay friends/neighbors, and I make it a point to treat them like anyone else – love them, be there for them, show grace when I can. But that only goes so far. I won’t attend any commitment ceremonies or what not. They’ve invited me to activist groups and I’ve turned those down.

What I’ve felt from my gay friends is that they are in desperate need of authentic friendships. They run from relationship to relationship trying to fill their heart and quiet the loneliness. Being a stable presence in their life will (eventually) afford me the opportunity to share Christ with them.

Pastor Mark Driscoll said that the Greek word used is “pornea” and it is just a giant junk drawer for non-Biblical sexual behavior because “if God were specific, he knew some crazy person would say ‘but if it were with a sheep in the alley and…’ and try to justify it with a loophole.” Or something like that… not claiming an exact quote – don’t have the specific podcast on me. That word covers homosexuality, temple prostitution, friends with benefits, adultery, etc…

To the question at hand, what are my burning issues with Christianity (I will develop these more fully on a separate blog post if y’all are interested):

    1) Lack of Biblical literacy among professed Christians (something I’ve guilty of and am glad the SYNC series is pushing me back to God’s word). Too often, we read books ABOUT God and His Word and not His Word itself. (Not an indictment of good books – they can illuminate points but they aren’t a substitute for the Bible)

    2) Mixing of Christianity with non-Christian religions (Rob Bell recently gave a sermon on yoga-based meditative breathing and its use for the Christian. That bothered me alot.)

    3) Unwillingness to call sin ‘sin’ for risk of offending/hurting people. This is within and outside of the church.

    4) Being culturally relevant. How to be in the world but not OF the world. In a lecture I listened to yesterday, the speaker said that the Church is the intersection of Culture and the Gospel. How do you accomplish that without being a giant dork?

If I sit here longer, I am sure I can think of more but… yeah… that’ll do for now. :)

  19. Kelli June 17, 2008 at 8:55 am #

These may not make the list, but they’re certainly high on mine. : )

1.) Marriage Issues (divorce, infidelity, headship&submission)
2.) Mentorship (we’ve got lots of great pastors but not enough mentors and spiritual “fathers” and “mothers”)
3.) Benevolence (some churches do great mission work financially and by way of missionairies. But what about those who are in need in their local congregation?)

  20. CM June 17, 2008 at 8:56 am #

I know the bible states in Proverbs 6:16-19
There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to Him:
    haughty eyes,
    a lying tongue,
    hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
a false witness who pours out lies,
and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

I’m sure society doesn’t mean these stated in Proverbs are the exact issues. They probably resemble that of homosexuality, sexual impurity, adultery, war, greed/power/lust, and church officials falling b/c of indulgence in sin.
My thoughts are why indulge in sin to find out what is going on in society. It only compromises yourself and those you lead. Your mind is pretty powerful and remembers things seen, heard, etc. and you never know the whole effect things cause on the subconscious level as well as on the conscious level. How can we expect others as well as our children to make the right choices if we ourselves are not setting the right example in all we do.

  21. brandy June 17, 2008 at 10:06 am #

I think along with homosexuality, premarital sex is a biggie among Christians. Both from those doing it and those who aren’t. Obviously. ;-) I think it’s a burning issue b/c as much as people want to believe Christians “don’t do IT” before they’re married, a lot do.

  22. Adam O June 17, 2008 at 10:06 am #

I think this is a burning issue in the church today. So many people struggle with this more than is known in the church and i think the main reason people don’t talk about it in church is fear of being rejected. It seem some churches see this subject as taboo i dont even know how to go about bring it up in church. But yah i really believe it needs to be brought up and churches need to have programs that people can turn to for help.
Ok off my soap box now. Great discussion Pete. But i think some others would be

    denominational conflict/barriers
    politics in the church
    divorce in the church

I know they were already mentioned but they are hot topics to me

  23. tawny June 17, 2008 at 10:44 am #

I dashed off my first comment on my way out the door to work. I was praying about it, “Lord, what are YOUR burning issues about the Church today?” I think He gives His people passion for issues that are close to His heart. But trying to think about it from His perspective made me wonder if the biggest crisis in the Church today isn’t our lack of love for God, Himself.

  24. melissa1970 June 17, 2008 at 10:51 am #

    other burning issues
    1. hypocracy (did i spell that all wrong?)
    2. greed
    3. lust and sexual impurity
    4. evangelism and fame
    5. Christians not reading the bible
    6. Christians judging others

  25. Jan June 17, 2008 at 11:15 am #

I think the issues that the church HAS to address are:
    1) Sexism – please note that I go farther than just women in ministry leadership, although that must be included. I think many times it includes underlying attitudes that are simply unloving and perhaps prideful. I think the world sees these attitudes for what they are – the spiritual stickers we slap on them don’t fool them.
    2) Unity and True Community – This goes hand in hand with #1. We are so critical at times of one another plus truly deep relationships are oftentimes not modeled well in the church.
    3) Bigotry in all forms – racism, against homosexuals, etc.
    4) Truth-telling – I think it’s hard for us to be loving and not feel like we’re accepting sinful behavior. It’s a hard line to walk. To love and to tell the truth is significant.
    5) Sex – we’ve avoided the topic forever. It’s coming back to bite us. The only place the church is being honest about this is in student ministry. Our kids are better prepared than many adults.
    6) Simplicity/Consumerism – I think this hits the environment, but it also is a spiritual issue many of us struggle with.

I’m loving this discussion. I’m thinking about doing a series at Cross Point this fall on the subject matter so keep it coming. By the end of the day you guys will have the series written for me!!

  27. Cortni June 17, 2008 at 11:39 am #

It would be great to see issues addressed like greed, pride, apathy.

  28. godzgaljen June 17, 2008 at 12:33 pm #

1.) Unity- so much could get accomplished if we worked together!
2.) Immorality- homesexuality, premarital, immodesty, affairs.
3.) Country club christianity- church as a club or an organization to belong too. REAL christianity.
4.) Repentance- I don’t think most churches truly talk about repentance and how it is a daily thing.
5.) Living in the world but not Of it….big difference.
6.) Global warming…LOL…how we should be worried about reaching the lost…not worrying as much about recycling. I think we should take care of the earth but….global warming is going to be hell(the place) for most people if we don’t love and tell others of Jesus.

I think some other burning issues are:
    speaking in tongues
    women in ministry
    tithing
    dealing with poverty
And my burning issue is this:
How does a 50 year old man who wants to serve God in a fulltime ministry go about doing it. I have a burning desire to serve Him, but I don’t know where to start. People always say that you don’t have to serve fulltime to serve Him. Like I don’t know that? But I do DESIRE to serve Him fulltime. Help.

  31. mjdaniel June 17, 2008 at 2:33 pm #

    Mine:
    1. $ (prosperity vs. poverty, tithing vs. giving , stewardship vs. ownership, waste vs. blessing)
    2. Sexuality (Porn, Homosexuality, Adultery)
    3. The role of the Holy Spirit and Spiritual Gifts (manifestation gifts, tongues)
    4. Pride (showiness
    5. Media (how much/little to use, how much to let in/keep out, how much to pattern after)
    6. People (love, affirmation, discipleship, encouragement)

    His:
Gluttony, Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Greed, Lust

Dang, I feel a lot better when I use my list, not His.

  33. Phil June 17, 2008 at 3:03 pm #

    Wow…now this is a can of worms…
    1. Legalism…enough said
    2. Bigotry…racism
    3. Denominations….I want to unpack this but won’t
    4. Service…to much time in church and not enough time serving and encouraging.
    5. Popularity
    6. the WORD

there are to many times and instances we don’t do things the things Jesus would have just done wit

  34. Phil June 17, 2008 at 3:07 pm #

without hesitation, feeding the hungry , helping the poor, on and on. We come across those situations everyday and what do we do….?? We walk away saying I hope they get help or maybe they’ll find a good dumpster full of stuff somewhere. We need to start recogonizing hurts and pains more….. our own and others.

Gosh. I’m just glad that not ONE PERSON has to have all the answers to all the burning issues of our present culture. Thank GOD that HE is in charge.

I have to really hold my tongue b/c there’s a lot of judgment in a lot of these posts about “burning issues”. Perhaps the church should do a “How To” sermon on effectively removing large planks from eyeballs….

  37. gofocus June 17, 2008 at 6:25 pm #

A burning anything will eventually burn out. How to know God… that’s what concerns me. Belief and rules are questionable, at best. God is absolute… help me understand Him and I will have no burning issues.

  38. gleechoo June 17, 2008 at 7:05 pm #

Good thot-provoking post and question… I like the response of ‘gofocus’…I join him/her “help me understand Him and I will have no burning issues”.

    1. Is the church out to crucify Jesus through these marginal issues like homosexuality. What is the root cause to this issue? Please don’t blanket that as sin. Man knows his own sins but unable to acknowledge and repent because of pride and hardness of heart. Sometimes, fellow-believers are the greatest stumbling block to repentance!

    2. Church ministers and teachers and leaders have missed the mark on their roles and responsibilities in church and society. Pastor’s role is to shepherd His flock — a tall order. Sadly the preaching often is one of rhetoric rather than spirit-filled and lived-out authentic lives. Glad that God sent His Son to earth and lived and suffered — Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Jesus knew His vision and mission on earth…and set His face on the cross to redeem and reconcile man to God.

    3. Living out life honestly and consider Jesus living in the context of His times…the ones who crucified Him were the Pharisees, Sadducees and teachers of the law…not just the public. Jesus was and is the concrete reality of our faith.

[Pete, please feel free to delete this comment. Thank you.]

In no particular order, I think:

    -materialism
-social justice (poverty, homelessness, racism, sexism, criminal justice system, etc)
    -sexuality
    -parenting and marriage
-honesty/authenticity from Christians (whether it be in worship, politics, media, in the community, or personal interactions with others)
-what grace means in today’s world/culture/society/times

After reading “Building a Healthy Multi-Etnic Church” by Mark Deymaz, I have come to believe until we as a people from different cultural backgrounds come together as one, many of the other hot topics everyone is talking about will continue to be hard to address let alone fix.

I’m a Relevant Magazine subscriber and they actually had all 7 Burning Issues in their last issue…so I know what the other 6 issues are…

I highly recommend Relevant Magazine to anyone in their 20′s and 30′s. (Trust me…I’m not trying to sell the product, I’m telling you how good it is)

  44. Becca Clark June 18, 2008 at 5:53 am #

I bet that the series focuses on “burning issues” as in controversial ones, so I guess the other six are:
    1. abortion
    2. christian response to the environment
    3. evolution/creation/intelligent design
    4. interfaith/ interreligious pluralism
    5. christianity and secular politics
    6. women’s leadership

For the record, I don’t think any of these (okay one or two)should be burning issues. What should burn at our hearts are issues like:
    1. The poor
    2. The hungry
    3. The naked/without shelter
    4. Those on the margins of society and how we share Christ’s radical love with them
    5. Stweardship of the earth and all its likfe (okay, so that’s environment)
    6. Passion, committment, and integrity in the Body of Christ, both personal and collective
    7. The role of the church in the postmodern world, and how we get people with their hearts on fire for God and God’s children.

Thanks for the reminder of how much I need to subscribe to Relevant!

  45. Bill Renfrew June 18, 2008 at 8:30 am #

    Great discussion:

Not neccesarily in order of importance:

___The destructive power of the internet (chat rooms, porn, etc). If I hear of one more divorce because someone met their soul mate on a chat room. This happens all the time and it’s complete insanity. If it’s true that 75% of marriages break up now (up from 50%) I’d bet the house that the internet is the cause of the increase.

___The church as a refuge for the sick, broken, sinful…a hospital for the helpless not a club for the spiritually pure. (A guest of our Tuesday a.m. small group brought this up…great point.)

___The image of Christianity (a la Pete’s recent series on what people think of Christians.) This really scares me. We look so bad out there….

I fear the list includes (in no specific order): women in leadership, abortion, global warming, religious pluralism, politics and tithing. I wish it included: world hunger, international debt reduction, earth’s stewardship, racism and economic disparity, discipleship, and what it means to love God with all your heart/mind/strength/spirit.

  48. Shelby June 24, 2008 at 10:28 am #

Hurt, pain, fear, desperation. People are hungry and tired and sick and feel very unloved and unvalued. We should be spending our time on that and God can work on the other “issues” within each of us.

In this era there are plenty of bedding products available to spruce up your bed and bedroom. One among these is the black duvet cover, which has and continues to cause some confusion amongst shoppers. A duvet cover is only one of many quick and easy ways that you may keep your comforter clean and looking like new. Almost anyone can experience a much better night’s sleep because of the fluffy and extra soft feel that duvets add. The reason for the confusion amongst shoppers is in part due to naming. A duvet is also often called a down comforter and is simply a blanket. Duvet covers are much like pillow cases that help keep clean and protect the duvet. Locations simple tips to hold your duvet and duvet cover clean and looking like new.

The easiest reaction you can have to keep them clean is a bit morning shake. Every morning after you wake up simply give your duvet a good shake. It might not sound like much but doing this helps to remove any dust that has collected on the duvet over night. A thorough shake each morning is a simple way to keep the duvet and cover looking fresh between washes, since it is far too impractical to wash your duvet every day and the fact remains it is not required. So a simple morning shake is plenty of.

While daily washes aren’t required, there will come a time you will want to wash your duvet cover. The simple truth is that you’re going to wash the cover much more frequently than the actual duvet. How often you wash the treatment depends yourself preference, but it’s obvious that if your cover is starting to look a little dirty or unpleasant to touch, then you know that it is time to take the cover off and throw it in the washing machine. I would personally wash my cover one or more times a week, and maybe twice during the summer season.
